1 ISE - Divison 2 - BIOELECTROCHEMISTRY Report 2010 Topics Aspects of electrochemistry and electroanalysis characterizing biological processes at the molecular level and relevant to the mechanisms of biological regulation of cells. Members: 607 ( ) Division officers Chair: Lo Gorton, Past Chair: Wolfgang Schuhmann, Chair Elect: Alexander Kuhn, Vice- Chairs: Woonsup Shin and Evgeny Katz Divisional Meeting In order to improve the activity of our division and to discuss future activities a divisional lunch meeting was held on Thursday 30 Sep., 2010, in Nice in conjunction with the annual meeting. Several topics were discussed including the way of establishing a closer contact with the members, especially students. In this respect a decision was made last year (2009) that at the annual meeting in Nice (2010) our division should serve as the pilot division for testing a new type of presentation at the bioelectrochemistry symposium organised by division min talks were scheduled devoted to student presentations and the presenting students may benefit from some financial support in order to assist them with covering the travel costs. The experience of that was discussed and it was decided that we should continue with such 10 min student presentations also at the next annual meeting (Niigata, 2011). The initiative taken by Dr. Fred Lisdat on prolonging the poster session was also discussed and was later during the autumn of 2010 formulated into a document that was in Nov submitted to the ISE and also to the organisers of the 62 nd annual meeting of the ISE. Activities at Annual Meetings 61 th Annual Meeting, Nice, France, 2010 Symposium 3: Bioelectrochemistry. From fundamentals to applications with a special focus on nanostructured material Sponsoring division: Division 2 Symposium organisers: Lo Gorton, (Coordinator) Lund University, Sweden, Alexander Kuhn, University of Bordeaux, France, Woonsup Shin, Sogang University, Seoul, Korea, Christophe Innocent, CNRS, Montpellier, France Division 2 sponsored 3 poster prizes à 300. Electrochemistry plays a key role in monitoring important species in environmental and biological fluids, and bioelectrocatalysis is an important concept in environmental and biological systems. This symposium of the Bioelectrochemistry Division also covers all general aspects of bioelectrochemistry. Division 2 will sponsor this symposium with 3 poster prizes à Biosensors for environmental monitoring - Bioelectrochemical remedies and carbon dioxide conversions - Sensors and biosensors for health monitoring - Modification of surfaces and interfaces with enzymes, organelles, cells, and biomimics - Bioelectrocatalysis and electrochemically driven or assisted biological conversions - Bioelectrochemistry of cells and tissues - Electrochemical transportation through membrane and its mimic - Enzyme bioelectrochemistry and bioenergetics - Electrochemical monitoring of reactive oxygen species, receptors, and cells - Electrochemistry in neuroscience Symposium Organisers Woonsup Shin (Coordinator), Sogang University, Korea (shinws@sogang.ac.kr) Fred Lisdat, Wildau University, Germany Tadashi Matsunaga, Tokyo University AT, Japan Hideaki Matsuoka, Tokyo University AT, Japan Symposium 5: Bioelectrochemistry for Energy Transformation This symposium will focus on all aspects of bioelectrochemistry related to energy conversion. This is because electrode reactions catalysed by enzymes or microorganism play important roles in conversion of chemical to electrical energy. Biomolecules are also promising fuels for electrochemical energy sources. Electrochemical methods are already well estabilished tools for the studies of energy conversion in living organisms. This research area is highly multidisciplinary. It includes fundamental issues and sets ambitious applied goals. It is expected that this symposium will bring together contributions from a diverse range of specialists for a fruitful exchange of ideas and productive debates.
3 Within this symposium it will also be organised a special half day symposium to commemorate the the work in bioelectrochemistry by Professor Tokuji Ikeda. Division 2 will sponsor this symposium with 3 poster prizes à Enzymatic and microbial biofuel cells - Electrodes, devices, perspectives and limits - Photobioelectrochemical fuel cells - Nonconventional applications of biofuel cells: sensing, electrosynthesis, wastewater treatment, bioelectronics - Electrochemical conversion of biomolecules - Electrochemical studies of energy conversion in living organisms and biomimetic systems This symposium includes a special session (half day or day) in honour of Prof. Ikeda. Symposium Organisers Marcin Opallo (Coordinator), Polish Academy of Science, Poland Lo Gorton, Lund University, Sweden Kenji Kano, Kyoto University, Japan Evgeny Katz, Clarkson University, USA 63 rd Annual Meeting, August Prague, Czech Republic, 2012 For this meeting the division plans to organise 2 symposia Symposium 1 Electrochemistry meets biology: fundamental aspects of electrochemistry with biological systems This symposium focuses on fundamentals of electron transfer pathways and mechanisms within and between biological systems and between biological systems and electrodes.
