Identifier: A combination of two or more letters. The first letter is always G followed by one or more letters indicating the fiber composition. 12 Test Methods of papers with densities less than 0.9 g/cm3 are measured in accordance with ISO 534. In the case of densities less than 0.9 g/cm3 Micrometer dimension and setting: Area 2 cm2. Pressure 100 kpa. In the case of densities equal to or greater than 0.9 g/cm3 Micrometer dimension and setting: Area 34.5 mm2 (diameter 7 mm) Pressure 261 kpa (9 N) Number of layers per sample: 10 layers when paper thickness is less than layers when paper thickness is greater than 30. Basis Weight Basis weight is determined in accordance with ISO m easurem ent sam pl es are weighed using an analytical balance with a measuring precision g. The result of the measurement is then converted to g/m2. 13 Water Absorption Samples: Width: 15 mm. Length: 200 mm. Each sample is held vertically and inserted at least 4 mm into bath of deionized water at 23 C. Afte r ten minutes the progression of the water front is measured and its mean position noted. The mean position of the water front is calculated from (maximum distance - minimum distance)/2. An average of three samples is taken. properties properties are measured in accordance with ISO Samples: Width: 15 mm. Conditioned: 24 hours at 23 C and 50% relative humidity (RH). Five samples are taken in the machine direction from each roll being tested. In the case of papers with density greater than 0.55 Grip distance: 100 mm. Draw speed: 8 mm/min. Determination of presence of conducting particles With this test the number of conducting particles per m 2 paper is determined. A layer of paper is placed on a sheet of brass (40 cm by 50 cm) which acts as the negative pole. A brass cylinder acting as the positive pole is rolled over the paper at a speed of 0.14 m/s. A fixed voltage of 11O V is applied. The presence of a conducting particle indicated by the flash of a lamp placed in the circuit. Dielectric measurement (BDV break down voltage) Samples: - Cut two layers of paper, 25 cm by 40 cm. - Dry for at least 30 minutes in oven at 105 C. Measurement of the dielectric is performed immediately after removal from oven under ambient conditions. Negative electrode is an aluminum sheet. 14 Subject sample to increasing DC voltage at a rate of 200 V/s. Continue until discharge, note final value of the applied voltage. The dielectric is calculated using the following equation: UD: Dieletric (V/ ) U: Final voltage t: Sample thickness () U = U 2t Moisture Content Determining sample weight: - 15 g is taken from paper roll and weight determined (E). Sample is then dried at 105 C until weight observed is stable. Weight is again determined after drying (A). Moisture content is calculated using following equation: F = 100% FA: Moisture content (%) E: Weight before drying (g) A: Weight after drying (g) Conductivity Procedure to prepare water extract sample. Immerse 5 g sample of paper in 200 g deionized water. Heat flask for thirty minutes, mildly boiling under reflux cooler. Allow flask to cool to room temperature and pour off extract. Prepare in similar fashion blank test using only deionized water. Conductivity of extract is measured using a conductivity meter of sufficient sensitivity. Measure the conductivity of blank test and subtract. Iron Particle Measurement Samples: - Cut two samples 400mm by 250 mm to get a total area of 2000 cm2 Prepare nitric acid solution by adding 5% potassium permanganate to 100 ml of 10% nitric acid. Spray sample with nitric acid solution. After a period of 2 minutes, spray the sample with 5% potassium ferrocyanide solution and let stand for 5 minutes. GLATFELTER, EDITION GLT16-2 page

15 Iron particles present will react with reagents, become coloured and appear as blackish-blue specks within blue areas. It is important to measure the central blackish blue area only, ignore the solution blotted area surrounding the particle. Count the number of particles and rank as follows: - Number of particles < 0.08 mm 2 - Number of particle in range mm 2 - Number of particles > 0.10 mm 2 ph ph is determined using the same extract as prepared for the conductivity measurement. Chloride content Procedure to prepare water extract sample. Immerse 5 g sample of paper in 200 g deionized water. Heat flask for thirty minutes, mildly boiling under reflux cooler. Allow to cool to room temperature and filter water extract. Chloride content of filtrate is determined using ion chromatography.
