1 Acrylic Block Copolymer for Adhesive Application Shinya Oshita, Advanced Adhesives Engineer, KURARITY Business Promotion Department, Kuraray Co., Ltd., JAPAN Ken Tomono, Sales Manager, SEPTON Business Unit, Kuraray America Inc., Pasadena, TX Introduction Kuraray Co., Ltd. started commercial plant production of acrylic block copolymer TPE, which has unique properties in Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (PSA) applications. It is produced by using our precision anionic polymerization technologies [1][2]. It has high potential as a high cohesion hot-melt PSA or an extrusion type PSA, which has advantages in the production of thick tape and co-extrusion film. The structures of the copolymers are not only triblock copolymer, i.e. poly(methyl methacrylate)- block-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (M-nBA-M) (Figure 1), but also diblock copolymer (M-nBA). Recently, we decided to add new monomers to our present repertory of acrylic block copolymer. By copolymerization of monomers other than nba, the possibility of the acrylic block copolymer will greatly increase. In this technical paper, the structure and some properties of acrylic block copolymers are described. The PSA performance of these polymer compounds is also described in detail. Adhesives properties can easily be controlled by compounding two polymers, i.e. triblock and diblock copolymers. These all acrylic block copolymer compounds can be used in high performance PSA applications demanding optical clarity, versatility of adhesion, weatherability, durability and melt processability. The acrylic block copolymer can improve adhesive strength, tackiness, and flow characteristic by using tackifier system. The miscibility and effects of some tackifiers are investigated. Finally, a different midblock structure which used the 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate (EHA) is introduced. The strong points of EHA-type polymer are shown in this paper. More detail properties of EHA-type polymer will be presented at TECH 35. Synthesis and Structure Figure 1 shows the molecular structure of the acrylic block copolymer, which is a completely (meth)acrylic triblock copolymer. It is sequentially synthesized using our living anionic polymerization at moderate temperatures. These block copolymers are built of two terminal hard PMMA blocks (Tg = 100 ~ 120 C) and one inner soft rubbery poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PnBA) midblock (Tg = 40 ~ 50 C). These block copolymers have a very narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.1 ~ 1.3). A
2 well-defined diblock copolymer can also be synthesized using similar techniques. As determined by SEC (size exclusion chromatography), the molecular weight distributions of the acrylic block copolymer and conventionally made PnBA can be seen in Figure 2. The molecular weight distribution of the acrylic block copolymer is much narrower than that of a conventional acrylic polymer. Moreover, the acrylic block copolymer has a well-defined structure and a very low residual content of monomers and oligomers. 3 Morphology Through the use of a specified staining method, the morphology of acrylic block copolymers using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) is possible (Figure 3). The TEM photo shows that the acrylic block copolymer has a well-defined structure. The micro phase separation is very clear and the sample shows cylindrically arranged dark PMMA micro domains with a diameter size of ca. 20 nm in a light PnBA matrix. The acrylic block copolymers have different micro phase domain morphologies depending on the content ratio of PMMA block and PnBA block. 100nm 100nm Figure 3. Morphology of acrylic block copolymers by TEM. Short cylindrical morphology for M-nBA-M 1 (low PMMA content), and Long cylindrical morphology for M-nBA-M 2 (middle PMMA content.). Compounding of Triblock & Diblock Polymer It is well-known phenomenon that viscoelasticity has a close relation to the PSA performance. The viscoelasticity of the acrylic block copolymers can be easily controlled by hard-block content and molecular weight, as well as by compounding different structure copolymers. The very low hard block content diblock polymer (M-nBA), which is in liquid form, can be arbitrary compounded with triblock polymer. Elastic modulus and melting feature at high temperature can be controlled dramatically by compounding diblock and triblock copolymers, as in controlling PSA performances. Figure 4 shows these dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) curves. These elastic modulus ranges are very suitable for PSA applications since tackifiers and plasticizers are not essential for formulations. Pure acrylic block copolymer formulation has excellent transparency, heat resistance, and weatherability.

Adhesive Properties of Acrylic Block Copolymer The PSA performance of the formulated adhesives is shown in Table 1. They consist of triblock and diblock copolymer, without any other additives. PSA properties can be controlled by altering the PMMA content of the block copolymer and/or by the formulation of triblock and diblock. Acrylic block copolymer has a good affinity for polar adherend, such as glass. Formulation 1 which has 23.5% PMMA content, i.e. M-nBA-M 1, also obtained enough wettability for glass, and showed high peel adhesion. Peel adhesion drops by decreasing PMMA content of compounds, because bulk properties decline (Figure 5). On the other hand, against non-polar adherend like polyethylene, peel adhesion rises by decreasing PMMA content of compounds, because wettability improves (Figure 5(c)). Since the polarity of stainless steel is between glass and polyethylene, behavior of peel adhesion is also between them (Figure 5). Holding power, tackiness and viscosity are also closely related to the PMMA content of the compounds. High PMMA content compound have good holding power, on the other hand, low PMMA content compound have good tackiness and low viscosity (Table 1).

(c) SS Miscibility of Acrylic Block Copolymers and Tackifiers In designing a PSA formulation with acrylic block copolymers, the miscibility with tackifiers needs to be considered. In principle, tackifiers and plasticizers should be selectively compatible with the PnBA block domain. Miscibility data of acrylic block copolymer/tackifier systems are shown in Figure 6 via tan delta curves. With increasing tackifier content, the glass transition temperature, Tg, of the PnBA block shifts to a higher temperature. This indicates that the PnBA block and tackifier are miscible. In high tackifier content formulations, it is noted that the PnBA domain becomes saturated and the tackifier becomes free (Figure 6(c)). Nakamura et al. have also observed miscibility with Rosin phenolic resin, special rosin ester resin, and aliphatic resin [3]. They have confirmed miscibility by TEM and DMA. Miscibility of rosin phenolic resin is superior to special rosin ester resin. Aliphatic resin is almost not miscible to acrylic block copolymer. The addition of tackifier having a good miscibility with acrylic block copolymer indicated good peel adhesion (Figure 7). Furthermore, mechanical properties also improve.

8 Adhesives Properties of Acrylic Block Copolymer with Tackifier System Figure 8 shows the temperature dependence of storage modulus (G ) for M-nBA-M 1 and M-nBA-M 1/tackifier compounds. The effect of adding tackifier is similar to rubber adhesives. Whereas tackifier is compatible with the soft block domain, it raises Tg and also reduces the modulus of a rubber domain. Wettability improves with downslide of the modulus at room temperature, and peel adhesive improves accordingly. The PSA performance of the formulated adhesives with tackifier systems is shown in Table 2. By formulating with tackifier, the peel adhesion improves to all adherends especially polyethylene (Figure 9). It is clear that the acrylic block copolymer formulations have excellent cohesion and lower viscosities than other conventional materials (hot melt rubber adhesives). Table 2. 10 EHA-type Block Copolymers EHA is a popular monomer in conventional crosslinked acrylic PSAs. Similar to nba, EHA and EHA/nBA blend monomer can be utilized in the living anionic polymerization system. Two EHA-type acrylic block copolymers were examined. One is midblock and consists of 100% EHA (M-EHA100-M), and the other consists of nba/eha=50/50 (M-EHA50-M). They have same molecular structure with M-nBA-M 1, except for monomer, i.e. molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and PMMA content. EHA-type polymer has some strong points compared with nba-type, such as improved tackiness and cohesion with/without tackifier (Table 3). Strong cohesion is confirmed by a creep test and SAFT (shear adhesion failure temperature) test. Furthermore, there was a tendency which stick-slip failure reduces depending on an EHA ratio (Table 3). EHA-type block polymers showed low peel adhesion and high wettability, so as an example, this could fit the protection film adhesives. EHA-type polymer shows the Tg shifts to lower temperatures with an increase in EHA ratio of the midblock. This should give rise to an improvement of low temperature properties, and can be increased the amount of tackifier. Table 3. 11 Conclusions Properties of M-nBA-M and M-EHA-M produced with novel anionic living polymerization were shown. The thermoplastic behavior and low viscosity of these polymers provide benefits in hot melt PSA. On the other hand, the Tg of PMMA block is high enough for normal applications. These materials are also well suited for solution coat PSA, and co-extrusion PSA tape. Formulating with these acrylic block copolymers can give rise to high performance PSA.
