2 -121- OBLIQUE IMPACT SENSITIVITY OF EXPLOSIVES THE SKID TEST This project concerns the use and study of a sensitivity test for large explosive charges to ob1 ique impact, a =condi tion resembling possible operational accidents Quarterly Report for April, May, June, I98 Engineering Order Nos and 54-3 DISCLAIMER This report was prepared as an account of work sponsored by an agency of the United States Government. 4 I ABSTRACT RX-4-CW, LX-7-1, and RX-9-CD were tested. The RX-4-CW and LX-7-1 are not complete; however, results so far show the RX-4-CW comparable in sensitivity to PBX 944 while the LX-7-1 is less sensitive at ". The RX-9-CD was slight- ly more sensitive than the RX-9-CB previously tested. I 1 PREVIOUS APPLICABLE WORK -2. Several RX-9 formulations have been tested; all were relatively sensitive with # reactions at low heights when impacting at ". Of all the RX-9's tested, RX-9-CB appeared to be the most desirable material based on sensitivity. DISCUSSION One formulation of RX-9, LX-7-1 and tested to determine the skid sensitiv RX-4-CW (an HMX-Vi ton variant) was ty. Compositions of the formulations were as follows: RX-9-CD Lot LX- 7-1 Lot 71-1 & RX-4-CW Lot LRL 9 HMX/DNPA/FEFO (94.3/3./1.7 % by weight) 3/4 Class A 71-2 and 1/4 Class B SR-1B-5 HMX/AG Run 3 DNPA/AG FEFO HMX/Viton A (92.2/9.8 % by weight) Special Grade (7-1) HMX/Lot 17 & Lot 18 Viton A HMX/Viton A (94./5.8 % by weight)
5 The test pieces were store( in a F chamber pending testing. results are listed below and in Table I. the target pad: The test Some trouble was encountered with the epoxy bond to the steel plate was imperfect, so that upon impact of the test piece, the epoxy would flake off. This caused two tests to be discounted. Prior to bonding the steel plates to the concrete block, all plates are now checked by ultrasonics for voids between the epoxy and steel. Those plates showing voids (.t 25%) are discarded. Height Angle Results (Reaction Level Mater i a 1 (ft) i n Sequence of Tests). RX-9-CD 2,5 O,O O RX-4-CW o,o,o, o,o,o,o,o* *The first two drops were discounted because of the epoxy problem and questionable pieces (had been dropped several times without new surface cut).
6 -124- FUTURE WORK; COMMENTS; CONCLUSIONS Testing will be completed on RX-4-CW and LX-7-1 a t the " level. A large PBX 944 hemisphere (% 3 pounds) has been fabricated and will be tested as soon as the formulation testing is complete. I: PBX 944 will be tested a t " i n six drops froni ', three drops from ', three drops from 3. 5 ', and three drops from 5.'
