FP7 Health Partnering event 10 June 2011, Brussels International session CIBIR: Center for Biomedical Research of La Rioja Eduardo Mirpuri, PhD. Biomedical Research Coordinator

Translational Research CIBIR: Young public biomedical research institution of the Regional Health Minister of La Rioja (2008). SPAIN. Activity: Translational Research: Basic & Clinical Research Aim: Approach the research to the clinical practice developing our own biotech and scientific network

Infectious diseases Cancer Alzheimer Areas of Interest: Infectious Diseases. Arthropod vectors: Jose Antonio Oteo,MD, PhD Microbiological and epidemiological studies are carried out, in an attempt to isolate new microorganisms implicated in human pathology HIV and metabolic alterations: Jose Antonio Oteo, MD, PhD Carmen Patricia Pérez, PhD This group study the molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying lipodystrophy associated to HIV infection/treatment, which will help in the treatment and/or prevention of lipodystrophy and the accompanying metabolic alterations. Cancer research. Angiogenesis: Alfredo Martinez, PhD The group has focused in the use of adrenomedullin (AM) to check angiogenesis (to combat cancer), or to boost it and induce the production of new blood vessels where necessary (healing of wounds, cardiac and cerebral ischemias). Lung cancer: José Manuel García Pichel, MD The group is focused in the study of molecular and cell mechanisms involved in initiation, progression and resistance to treatment of non-microcytic lung tumours (non-small cell or NSCLC). Proliferation & differentiation: Juan Cabello, PhD The group goes deeper into our knowledge of the pathways that regulate cell differentiation during the development of a cancer, in particular the Wnt pathway, whose deregulation is the underlying factor in certain types of cancer.

Infectious diseases Cancer Alzheimer Molecular microbiology Areas of Interest: Carmen Torres, PhD The group study the genetic characterization of the mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobials and virulence factors, as well as the determination of the genetic elements that intervene in their mobilization Neurodegenerative diseases related to Alzheimer disease and blindness. Miguel Morales Fuciños, PhD The group is focused in the development of new drugs that minimize the effects of Alzheimer disease such as the altered cognitive status or the synaptic loss as well developing new strategies against glaucoma. Keywords Infectious diseases, Oncology, Molecular microbiology, Neurodegenerative diseases, bioinformatics, genomics.

CIBIR s Facilities: Genomics Platform: High throughput sequencing: Illumina Genome Analyzer. María Íñiguez, PhD miniguez@riojasalud.es Bioinformatics Platform: Alberto de Luis Calvo adeluis@riojasalud.es Fluorescent and Confocal Microscopy. Proteomics Facility (Mass Spectrometry). Animal Facility (Specific Pathogen Free Barrier). Animal models for angiogenesis, alzheimer, proliferation and lung cancer (Rats, mice, lagomorfs and C. elegans). Human Tissue Bank.

Features: Most of the Staff is involved in national and european projects related to Human Health. Work in collaboration with the main hospital of the region (Hospital San Pedro): 2 clinical trials have been promoted by our scientists in 3 years. Collaboration with national and international, private/public sector: Europe, Asia and America. Developing our own biotech network (spin off) Targets: We search for new collaborations to intensify our research (private companies or public institutions). We want to keep on promoting the exchange of knowledge offering new experiences to our scientists. We offer a long experienced scientific staff and advanced technologies and facilities. We offer our hospital as a research partner and all our experimental/animal models

Topics of interest in the current work programme 2012: Clinical utility of -omics for better diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases. Validation of -omics-based biomarkers for diseases affecting the elderly. Systems biology Integrative systems biology and comparative genomics for studying human ageing and most common age-related conditions. Diagnostics for infectious diseases. Co-infection and co-morbidity in HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and hepatitis. Prevention and treatment for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. Preclinical and/or clinical development of substances with a clear potential as orphan drugs. Observational trials in rare diseases. Network to encourage technology transfer activity in FP-funded health research (especially in academic and governmental organisations). Training actions linked to intellectual property rights management and technology transfer.
