1 PhD in INGEGNERIA MECCANICA / MECHANICAL ENGINEERING - 34th cycle Research Area n. 1 - Advanced Materials and Smart Structures Number of scholarship offered Department 7 DIPARTIMENTO DI MECCANICA Description of the Research Area Research on advanced materials and smart structures is playing a crucial role in all the branches of mechanical and production engineering. The design and development of innovative materials (e.g. nano- and micro-structured materials, foamed alloys, metamaterials, bioinspired ones) is relevant to enhance specific functional properties customized on engineering applications. Both the innovative and existing materials require new processes to enhance material performance, to integrate new features and/or reduce the effect on the environment (i.e., eco-friendly production). New (numerical and experimental) multiscale models have to be investigated in order to characterize the mechanical behaviour of materials under different service conditions and degradation patterns. Moving from the material to the component and then to the mechanical systems, smartness and metamaterials can further help reaching customized functional performance. Development of smart materials, smart components and integrated measurement and control systems can lead to significant benefits (e.g. structural health monitoring, vibration attenuation, energy harvesting, quality control). Eventually, advanced modelling and experimental investigation of the interaction between the structure and the environment (e.g., bridge aeroelasticity, tall buildings and roof aerodynamics, cable dynamics) can aid designing a new generation of large structures where dynamic control is included at the design level. There are 7 available scholarships in this area (additional grants may be available after May 21st): - 1: generic - 5: thematic (to be specifically selected during application procedure) - 1: interdoctoral (to be specifically selected during application procedure) Stampato il 16/04/ / 2

6 PhD in INGEGNERIA MECCANICA / MECHANICAL ENGINEERING - 34th cycle Research Area n. 1 - Advanced Materials and Smart Structures Research Field: HOMOGENEIZED FAILURE CRITERIA FOR METAMATERIALS: MODELING, NUMERICS AND VALIDATION Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months) In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified. Context of the research activity Interdisciplinary PhD Grant The PhD research will be carried out in collaboration with research groups of the PhD programme in "MATHEMATICAL MODELS AND METHODS IN ENGINEERING". See for further information. Motivation and objectives of the research in this field Optical/electromagnetic and mechanical metamaterials led to a revolution in the properties of conventional materials, promoting the merging of several "concepts" in various applications. Indeed, this combination of properties represents the front-end of the development and the application of different metamaterials (microlattices, foams, stacked rods, bio-inspired trabecular structures) obtained with Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques. The chance to adopt and design metamaterials is strictly related to the development of computationally cheap methods (especially in 3D) based on the homogenization of structural units. In particular, we are interested in predicting/controlling the mechanical resistance of the new materials manufactured by AM, by implementing a smart numerical model that does not imply a detailed description of the cell microgeometry (the traditional 3D reconstruction of a unit cell). 1 / 4

7 Methods and techniques that will be developed and used to carry out the research The study will start from the analysis of trabecular cells manufactured by AM through a local reconstruction of the actual cell geometry from CT scan. This will be the input to develop an equivalent anisotropic homogenized material. The mechanical inelastic and fracture response of the homogenized cell will be tuned via the DIC-FEMU (FE model Update) technique applied to experimental tests on notched specimens and a series of detailed local FE elasto-plastic and damage analyses. Educational objectives Main goal of the thesis is the identification of homogenized failure criteria for micro-lattice structures and the corresponding implementation. This goal can be pursued by properly combining specific mathematical techniques with an experimental analysis of the mechanical response of micro-lattice structures and damage analyses. The topic of micro-lattice materials is a new challenging field of application and development in several settings, in particular for the design of new components and lightweight structures. The job opportunities are then for R&D positions in different areas such as aerospace, mechanical and automotive engineering, telecommunications, design, prosthetic medicine. 14 PhD in INGEGNERIA MECCANICA / MECHANICAL ENGINEERING - 34th cycle Research Area n. 1 - Advanced Materials and Smart Structures Research Field: MONITORING OF LASER ABLATION THERAPY OUTCOME FOR TUMOR REMOVAL Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months) In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified. Context of the research activity Motivation and objectives of the research in this field The successful student will work in the framework of European Research Council (ERC)-funded project LASER OPTIMAL (Laser Ablation: SElectivity and monitoring for OPTImal tumor removal). The project focuses on the improvement of a minimally invasive approach for tumor removal, based on the hyperthermal therapy by means of the use of laser source as a potential alternative to surgery. A technological platform will be developed to achieve the optimization and at safety improvement of the laser therapy. The measured values are useful to validate theoretical predictive models of the heat transfer in the tumor and in the tissue around. Educational objectives The candidate is expected to develop a real-time 1 / 3
