1 BIO 343 INTRODUCTION TO GENETICS LECTURER: Dr. Lia Dorn OFFICE: HS 45; LAB: HS 47/50 PHONE: ; OFFICE HRS: Poted to D2L LECTURE HOURS: 11:30 12:30 pm in Haley Science Building; Rm.268 TEXT: Brooker, Genetic: Analyi & Principle (4th edition or Cutom Book) McGraw Hill. OBJECTIVES: Genetic and it experimental method i one of the broadet and mot rapidly evolving field of cience. I cannot poibly cover it all, o my goal i to teach you how to think like a geneticit, while learning genetic concept o that you can judge for yourelf the value of emerging genetic technologie and dicoverie. Thi coure cover Mendelian genetic and it complication, the molecular bai of gene and their affect on phenotype, the method of identifying and characterizing the genetic bai of dieae and other phenotype a well a population and evolutionary genetic. The prerequiite for thi coure are Bio105 and 323, which by extenion mean you have taken Chem 105 and 106. The laboratory part of thi coure will expand on what you have learned in Molecular and Cell Biology (Bio 323). I will aume you have matered the Bio323 material and will not wate much time reviewing thi material but there will be ome review of 323 material in lab. ASSESSMENT: How are you going to earn your grade? EXAMS: 4 exam each worth 100 point. They will be motly problem imilar to thoe in your D2L quizze. (400 total point). Note: For exam you will need a calculator. YOU CANNOT USE YOUR PHONE AS A CALCULATOR ON EXAMS. PROBLEM SOLVING: There will be 8 D2L problem-olving eion where you will be required to olve problem that will be available on D2L. They are worth 10 point each (total = 80 point). Thee problem are preented a quizze that will be available ~1 week before the due date for that quiz. During that week you may open it, print it and dicu potential olution with your peer and me. On the day that the quiz i due you have until 10:30pm to ubmit your quiz. After that 10:30 pm time you have a 6 hr grace period to ubmit late (i.e. until 5:30 am the following morning). After that, you loe 1 pt for every hour the quiz i late. THE QUIZ CLOSES AT 10:30PM THE DAY AFTER IT IS DUE AT WHICH POINT THE GRACE PERIOD IS OVER! You can make up ome or all of thoe lot point at the end of the emeter with the extra credit quiz depending on how many quizze you mi.

2 You hould ave the anwer a you enter them. You can till change anwer even after aving but once you ubmit the quiz you cannot. You can ee the anwer 1 day after the late ubmiion deadline. ***IMPORTANT***: D2L can be temperamental. Do not wait for the lat hour to ubmit your anwer. D2L tell me when you are logged on, if you tried to ubmit a quiz and even if you have opened the quiz. Excue for waiving late ubmiion penaltie that will NOT be accepted include: D2L problem in the lat hour before the deadline. I forgot to ave my anwer I forgot after I went to work My internet ervice at home failed. BUT if you have ubmitted by the deadline and D2L fail to recognize your ubmitted quiz end me an . In mot cae, I have your quiz and can force D2l to accept it. EXTRA CREDIT QUIZZES: There will be one extra credit quiz at the end of the emeter worth 5 point. Beide the extra credit, it will be very imilar to quetion you will find on the lat exam o I highly recommend that you do thi. *NOTE: Extra credit point from thi quiz can be ued to pa the coure but, you may have other opportunitie for extra credit point that may change your letter grade but thee EC point cannot be ued to pa the coure. LABORATORY: I worth 105 point. The lab yllabu i appended to the end of thi document. LABORATORY ATTENDANCE: Loe 5 pt on a report for every unexcued abence during the week of that report exercie. Total Poible point = = 585. GRADING SCALE: A = %, A- = % B+ = % B = % B- = % C+ = % C = % C- = % D+ = % D = % D- = % F (Failure) < 60% Grade may be curved at the end, if neceary.

3 Diputing a grade: if you feel your exam ha been migraded, you mut ubmit to me a requet for re-grade within a week of the day I have paed exam back (not the day you picked it up). That requet mut be in writing accompanied by a copy of the exam in quetion that I will keep. Student With Diabilitie are welcome in thi cla! If you need pecial accommodation pleae contact me during office hour in the firt week of cla. Thi include tudent with diagnoed learning diabilitie. If you feel you hould be evaluated for a learning diability, pleae contact the Project Succe office at or go to their webite at Claroom Etiquette: pleae ilence all pager, cell phone; or ipod etc.and do not talk or whiper unle called upon in turn (but feel free to raie your hand for a quetion or comment at ANY time!). Pleae do not text during my lecture. If you find me that boring jut don t bother to come. Texting i more diruptive than you upect and wate both my time and your money. Incomplete Grade may be given in extreme circumtance, uch a when a tudent become too ill to complete the emeter' work. Pleae talk to me if you think your ituation warrant an "I" grade and be prepared to provide documentation. Make up exam. If you cannot make one exam everal alternative may be available to you depending on the ret of my teaching obligation at that time. I will do what I can, given your circumtance. If you know ahead of time that you mut mi an exam (for intance if your job require that you work that day) pleae let me know ahead of time. The chedule of lecture, exam and due date for problem. There may be minor change to thi chedule of lecture without notice. I will announce uch change in cla. Exam and quizze will tay on chedule unle (for quizze) there are problem with D2L. Thi coure i deigned to give you hand-on experience with modern genetic technique. It i not deigned to coincide very much with your lecture material but it will on occaion. You will learn molecular lab technique that are ueful for genetic, learn to debug thoe

6 technique, a well a how to interpret your reult and what that mean for undertanding gene and their function. Thee exercie are baed on molecular biology concept you hould have learned in 105 and 323. Therefore, we will ue ome lab time to review thoe molecular biology concept. Depite thi coure poition a a core coure there are only two hour a week devoted to laboratory. That mean that your exercie will tretch out over a period of week. We will help you keep track. It may help if you ue the chedule preented below a a checklit. ORGANIZATION: The coure conit of three baic ection or module. Within each module are a erie of exercie deigned to teach the topic covered by that module. The firt module Baic Lab Technique teache the baic technique you will need for the ret of the emeter. For ome of you with experience in profeor lab thi module will be very baic at time. Pleae be patient. Remember thi coure i a required coure for all biology major even thoe who are not puruing reearch that require thee technique. Thoe of you with reearch experience may find that uing your expertie to help le-experienced tudent a ueful exercie. Lat, ome of thee exercie are deigned to at leat partially fail o do not get dicouraged. GRADING: The lab part of the coure i worth 105 point toward your total grade.
