National Measurement Laboratory Designated Institute for chemical and bio-measurement

Measurement is essential to our everyday lives Thousands of decisions based on measurement results are made each day. For governments, society and individual consumers to rely on these decisions, they must have confidence in the measurements themselves.

Our national role We deliver world-leading chemical and bio-measurement science (metrology) as part of the UK National Measurement System (NMS); a collaboration of laboratories funded by UK government (BEIS). This core measurement infrastructure, often unseen, keeps measurements running smoothly. Providing confidence in measurement We ensure trust in chemical and biomeasurements in the UK through our state of-the-art measurement capabilities, protecting consumers and improving quality of life by: supporting a global harmonised measurement infrastructure developing and publishing reference methods producing reference materials providing calibration support to UK industries Supporting innovation We provide measurement solutions to address current and future challenges, promoting productivity, skills, trade and economic growth by: bridging the gap between fundamental research and operational use of technology by our stakeholders providing novel products and services to ensure translation from proof of concept to application. Our research areas cell-based therapies biopharmaceuticals cancer therapeutics Advanced therapeutics nanomedicines infectious diseases precision medicine neurodegenerative diseases Diagnostics food safety environmental safety Safety & security antimicrobial resistance cancer diagnostics disease biomarkers food allergens national security food authenticity

Our impact Our nanoparticle characterisation expertise is informing best practice guidance for end-users to support trade in the growing bn nanotechnology industry and improving the competitiveness of UK nanotechnology companies. Our work to improve measurement accuracy of current explosive and drug detection equipment at UK borders and ensure appropriate adoption of novel technologies will help disrupt the 3.7bn illicit drug market and safeguard the UK from further terrorist attacks. Our innovative cell characterisation framework is already supporting identification of critical quality attributes for today s 5+bn market for cell-based therapies. Our novel traceable measurement framework for the absolute quantitation of nucleic acids in biological samples enhances the reproducibility and cost-effectiveness of bns spent on pre-clinical studies, reducing public health risk and improving patient outcomes. Our reference materials and mass spectrometry-based reference methods are improving the accuracy of, and confidence in, therapeutic drug monitoring of organ transplant patients. This improves patients clinical outcomes whilst saving the NHS at least 150m/yr from costly alternative treatments.

Our products and services Measurement research method development, validation and transfer rapid sample profiling measurement at trace level concentrations analysis of complex samples Calibration services high accuracy specialised analytical services support industry compliance with regulation/legislation reference measurements ISO/IEC17025 accredited Training & consultancy analytical quality assurance analytical techniques data analytics food and agriculture ISO/IEC17025, ISO17034 accreditation Reference materials sourcing, preparation, distribution and storage high accuracy characterisation ISO Guide 34 accredited
