1 Software Announcement February 22, 2005 IBM Tape Manager for z/vm helps automate daily tape operations, increasing data availability and improving administrator productivity Overview IBM Tape Manager for z/vm R1 provides z/vm system administrators and operators the ability to manage, monitor, and protect tape resources on z/vm systems. By helping to automate common daily tape operations and eliminate tedious, often error-prone, manual steps, Tape Manager can increase data availability and improve administrator productivity. Tape Manager includes the ability to: Specify which tape drives belong to a particular system Dynamically change tape pool definitions Control allocation of tape devices Mount tapes Ensure authorization of correct tape ownership Share tapes with other z/vm users Share assignable tape devices with other applications within the same z/vm system Share assignable tape devices with z/vm and non-z/vm systems in other LPARs and within a sysplex In addition, Tape Manager provides operational support, including the ability to: Specify tape retention periods Catalog information on utilization of tape resources Routines are also provided for common administrative activities, such as management of scratch tapes and expiration processing. Tape Manager can be used for stand-alone z/vm tape management or in conjunction with IBM DFSMSrmm on z/os. When used with DFSMSrmm, Tape Manager uses the RMM tape catalog as its source for z/vm tapes. All updates to z/vm tape information are made in RMM. More information about Tape Manager for z/vm can be found at stormgmt/zvm/tape/ Key prerequisites z/vm V4.3, or later Planned availability date April 29, 2005 At a glance Tape Manager for z/vm R1: Manages tape resources by organizing tapes into system and private groups called pools Monitors tape resources and notifies you when tape resources are running low or tape catalog disk space is nearing capacity Protects tape resources through Tape Manager authorization facilities on z/vm or through your existing security manager when running with RMM on z/os Supports the automation of tasks involving tapes through APIs Allows sharing of tape devices with other z/vm and non-z/vm systems For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or the Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL Reference: LE001 This announcement is provided for your information only. 2 Description Tape Manager for z/vm helps automate common daily tape operations and helps eliminate tedious, often error-prone, manual tasks. By managing and monitoring tape resources, Tape Manager increases data availability and improves operator efficiency. Tape Manager can be used in either a stand-alone z/vm environment, or in conjunction with IBM DFSMSrmm to manage z/vm and z/os tape resources. Tape Manager for z/vm organizes and stores information about tape resources in a tape catalog. Administrators, operators, and users can use commands to query information in the catalog, add and organize information in the catalog, request tape mounts, find scratch tapes, and manage tape retention periods. Information in the tape catalog is organized into system and private pools by system administrators, operators, and users, facilitating tape searches and access control. Support for system and private tape pools includes: Adding and deleting tapes to and from pools Dynamically creating and deleting tape pools to easily create an identifiable collection of tapes for a specific job or function, such as a daily system backup Creating new private pools that can use scratch tapes from the system pool or another private pool Enforcing access privileges based on the attributes of the pool and the individual tape Tape Manager facilitates improved management of tape resources by: Capturing and storing information in the tape catalog on the capacity and utilization of each tape resource Providing routines for common administrative activities, such as management of scratch tapes and expiration processing Monitoring tape resources benefits the operations staff and end users as warnings can be addressed before problems occur. System administrators and operators can take action before users see the error rather than reacting to the error when it occurs. When tape resources reach a predefined low threshold, a warning is sent to operations, giving them the opportunity to define additional tapes to the available scratch pool in the tape catalog. Similarly, if the tape catalog disks reach a predetermined high threshold, in terms of percent full, a warning is sent to operations, allowing them to request additional disk space before the limit is reached. When used in conjunction with IBM DFSMS Removable Media Manager (RMM), Tape Manager supports the management of all z/vm and z/os tapes in the RMM tape catalog. Tape pools, access privileges, and retention periods can be defined and updated from z/vm using familiar RMM commands. The updates to RMM are made by an agent running on z/os using the RMM API. In addition, RMM commands can be entered on z/vm. The agent will issue them on z/os just as a TSO user would, and return the output to the issuing user on z/vm as messages or a file in the virtual reader. In this configuration when the z/vm command completes, the resulting updates in RMM will only be available when RMM completes the appropriate tasks. When using Tape Manager with DFSMSrmm on z/os, RMM is the trusted source of tape resource information. In addition to managing tape resources, Tape Manager for z/vm also increases efficiency by supporting the sharing of tape devices with other applications and systems. For customers using the Removable Media Services (RMS) function of DFSMS/VM, Tape Manager will work with RMS to perform automated mounts and share tape devices using Automated Tape Libraries (ATLs). For customers requiring manual mounts, Tape Manager can dynamically find an available tape drive from a predefined device pool, attach it, and release it when done. This allows customers who aren t using RMS to share tape devices with: Other applications that interact directly with tape devices within a z/vm system. Other z/vm and non-z/vm systems across LPARs or across a sysplex. For example, customers using IBM Automated Tape Allocation Manager for z/os to share tape devices can also share these same devices with the z/vm systems using Tape Manager for z/vm. Sharing with guest systems that utilize the multiuser attach feature of z/vm is not supported. With Tape Manager, drives no longer need to be permanently assigned to a specific z/vm system, even for manual mount requests. Tape Manager for z/vm offers z/vm installations the ability to more effectively and efficiently manage: Tape resources in either a standalone z/vm environment or in conjunction with IBM DFSMSrmm on z/os The sharing of tape devices within a z/vm system or in conjunction with IBM Automated Tape Allocation Manager to share devices with z/os Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act Tape Manager for z/vm R1 is capable as of April 29, 2005, when used in accordance with IBM s associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) can be requested via IBM s Web site at product_accessibility/index.html Engine-based Value Unit pricing Engine-based Value Unit pricing for Tape Manager for z/vm R1 is designed to provide a decreasing price curve as hardware capacities and workload grow, which may help improve price/performance. There may also be a price benefit when you grow your capacity. Additional capacity is not priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit. Instead, additional capacity is priced starting at the capacity (engines) on which Tape Manager R1 has already been installed. Note: Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product. IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of. It is the customer s responsibility to manage

3 the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license. Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made. A no-charge Subscription and Support registration record will be established for each designated machine where Tape Manager for z/vm R1 is running. This no-charge Subscription and Support registration record will be linked to the billable Subscription and Support and all billable Subscription and Support within the scope of the engine-based Value Units aggregation will be linked together. Subscription and Support is an annual charge and should be kept at an annual term.
