1 Enterprise Architecture Consulting for BP R&M DCT Enterprise Architecture Implementation Project by Enterprise Architects August 2011 Enterprise Architects provides Enterprise Architecture consultancy expertise for the programme, in order to establish an Enterprise Architecture Office for R&M DCT that will provide the support to help projects deliver technical solutions based on a standard architecture for R&M (the target architecture for 2010 is a Service Oriented Architecture). BP is one of the world's leading integrated oil and gas companies. They provide customers with fuel for transportation, energy for heat and light, lubricants to keep engines moving, and the petrochemicals products used to make everyday items as diverse as paints, clothes and packaging. Objectives The key objectives and deliverables for the engagement are: An Enterprise Architecture Strategy An Enterprise Architecture Roadmap, that defines the migration path towards achieving a standard architecture across the Segment that is aligned with the Business Roadmaps. An Enterprise Architecture Blueprint, validated by Pathfinder projects, that describes how projects will use the standard enterprise architecture An Application Service Catalogue that lists the application services available for re-use by projects. Integration with the Enterprise Activity Model defining all R&M Business Processes. Core Requirements The requirements included developing the EA to support delivery of the following management services to its customers, the SPUs: Educating R&M SPU project teams about the benefits of application services and the usage of the Application Service Catalogue Working with projects to help them use the Enterprise Architecture to implement the best solution to meet strategic business needs. Manage the transformation incrementally, leveraging process improvement and organisational change management techniques to minimise risk and disruption. Planning the migration towards the target Enterprise Architecture to maximise business opportunities and minimise disruption to the business Planning key enabling architecture changes in the Enterprise Architecture roadmap Page 1

2 Scope of Work The Enterprise Architecture Office will be the primary point of reference for all architecture activity within R&M DCT. The Enterprise Architecture Office will manage the journey of R&M towards the target Enterprise Architecture which includes a Service Oriented Architecture. Enterprise Architects will seek to meet requirements for greater standardisation, consistency and convergence on the target Enterprise Architecture, leading to cost savings, greater efficiency and consolidation. SPUs will be advised against making arbitrary, inconsistent selections of applications, without considering the Segment and Group requirements and opportunities for reuse. Solution Overview The Enterprise Architecture project is part of the Strategy Implementation Programme, which follows the creation in December 2010 of a five-year strategy for R&M DCT. The aim of the Enterprise Architecture project is to complete work in 2006 to establish an Enterprise Architecture Office for R&M DCT that will provide the support to help projects deliver technical solutions based on a standard enterprise architecture for R&M (the target architecture for 2010 is a Service Oriented Architecture). The business case for developing a standard enterprise architecture rests on the reduced design and development time for technology-enabled business projects, through having pre-defined and reusable processes, design documents and software components. Further benefits accrue from more reusable application services and, in the longer term as the architecture becomes more prevalent, faster reconfiguration of processes to meet business demand. The applications landscape in R&M is complex, fragmented and heterogeneous, primarily as a result of tactical business integration. There are in excess of 2500 individual applications, including over 30 different ERP applications. Many applications are at different version levels, there are multiple point-to-point interfaces, and there is no common design standard. As a result, even minor changes are complex, slow and costly. This increases both Project and Base costs, and delays the delivery of business benefits. A standard architecture can help to overcome these problems, by: Introducing a standard design blueprint for new applications Standardising interfaces Providing a repository of reusable services and applications, catalogued for easy searching Providing linkages and checkpoints in the CVP process to encourage use of architecture guidelines and adoption of architecture standards Introducing an Architecture Office will help manage the transition and provide support to projects so that they incrementally refresh the applications landscape. The architecture office will facilitate building a repository of all IT Assets, including Services, Service Components, COTS Products and applications, for a greater degree of reuse and standardisation. 5 Benefits The R&M DCT Enterprise Architecture implementation project contributed to the overall R&M DCT Strategy by: Lowering total cost of ownership, from reduced design costs, less rework, and lower support costs Accelerating benefits delivery, reducing duration of projects that use the Enterprise Architecture Blueprint and reusable application services Providing the ability to make rapid changes to business processes via process orchestration Promoting more consistent and efficient approaches used in projects though the use of a standard target enterprise architecture and common standards Introducing a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Customer Feedback The Enterprise Architecture Strategy Implementation project was successfully completed on time. The Enterprise Architecture Framework deliverables were fully designed and accepted. Related Services EA Consulting EA Capability Development EA Governance & Planning Function Page 5
