1 Software Announcement March 7, 2006 facilitates sharing POS data from IBM 4690 OS applications on certain new retail consumer-service systems Overview facilitates information sharing storewide across multiple consumer touch points. It extends the functionality of IBM 4690 OS-based applications such as General Sales Application (GSA), Supermarket Application (SA), and SurePOS Application Client/Server Environment (ACE) on certain new consumer-service devices. It also helps consumers and employees access business information with intuitive, custom Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs). Store Integrator is a key component of the IBM Store Integration Framework. Today, IBM is announcing an easier way to purchase Store Integrator that eliminates store-level pricing. This change gives you a more flexible and affordable way to begin to realize the value of IBM Store Integrator. In addition, you can now leverage the Passport Advantage program to receive software license discounts based on your total IBM software purchases. provides a common programming interface for integrating store and Web-based applications with POS data. This API enables Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to interface their application with the existing business data in ACE, GSA, or SA. It also provides a toolkit based on industry-standard Extensible Markup Language (XML) to develop simple, intuitive GUIs for consumers and store associates. helps enable retailers to extend the business information in their 4690 OS-based POS systems to certain other technologies in the store to enable more seamless shopping interactions with self-service solutions such as photo or delicatessen orders from kiosks. When Store Integrator is used to integrate these solutions it helps reduce the need for duplicate price files and customer loyalty information, which can be difficult to maintain accurately. Retail store solutions built on Store Integrator help enable retailers to quickly respond to consumers demands for improved or personalized service, and build loyalty through a superior shopping experience while potentially motivating them to spend more. Such solutions can also potentially help the retailer increase employee productivity and provide competitive consumer service by providing up-to-the-minute information on product promotions, pricing, and customer shopping trends, while helping enable more efficient store operations to potentially reduce costs. Key prerequisites Refer to the Technical information section. Program number For details, refer to the Program number section in this announcement. By opening the POS platform for extensions and data and business logic sharing, retailers can leverage the capability of their existing IBM solutions to deliver unique and differentiating customer service. Store Integrator delivers this through a set of features that opens up the 4690 platform. Application Extension Facility This Store Integrator feature allows existing functionality within IBM General Sales Application, IBM Supermarket Application, and IBM SurePOS Application Client/Server Environment for 4690 to be accessible through a set of APIs for use remotely or by certain other applications such as self-service fuel, delicatessen, or photo special order kiosks. Many mobile POS and self-service checkout applications can also reuse the business logic of POS to provide consistency of operation. As a result, retailers can potentially reduce maintenance costs across these applications. By opening up the POS platform, retailers can transform the customer shopping experience. With Store Integrator, retailers can allow customers to scan products during the shopping process for pricing and product information from a variety of platforms such as kiosks, self-service tablets, or even their own PDA device. Retailers can also use the business logic of POS to help underpin their e-business and catalog operations with transaction business logic and customer loyalty information. Tying the customer touch points together to provide consistency of service and operation is a key objective of Store Integrator. Integrating applications with POS is now simplified with the use of the Application Extension Facility. Building new capabilities (for example, adding new subsystems such as store-within-a-store processing) can be made easier with a standard development environment of Java. Running on the existing 4690 platform, an application server, or a remote device, these extensions can be seamlessly integrated into POS. Retailers typically have made substantial investments in customized user exit programming and in other modifications of their existing POS applications. An advantage to retailers and IBM Business Partners who integrate applications via the Application Extension Facility is that they would then be able to run on all of the enabled POS applications including retailers customized versions of those applications. This means that a retailer using Supermarket Application could typically take advantage of an application or extension built for a retailer using SurePOS Application Client/Server Environment, assuming both customers were using the IBM Store Integrator solution. This also means that retailers using Supermarket Application enabled with IBM Store Integrator could more easily migrate forward to SurePOS Application Client/Server Environment because their unique extensions built in Java could carry forward to the new platform. The Store Integrator Application Extension Facility provides three sets of Java application programming interfaces: POS Data Provider an asynchronous event listener API to monitor POS data events such as operator sign on, loyalty card scanned, item added, or transaction status. POS Automation an API to drive the POS application through high-level commands like logon, query the price of an item, add an item to a transaction, or tender a transaction. POS Device Access an API to monitor, consume, or generate traffic for POS I/O devices like scanners, magnetic stripe readers, or receipt printers. The Application Extension Facility can be used on either the POS controller or the terminal. On the controller, it enables the existing POS terminal sales application to run in a virtual Client Session Server session. Multiple virtual sessions can be operating simultaneously on the same controller supporting applications that need to integrate with POS. When the Application Extension Facility is used on a physical POS terminal it enables the POS terminal sales application to be extended using Java. It also supports the Store Integrator Graphical User Interface feature. Graphical User Interface This enhanced GUI tool helps enable retailers to develop simple, intuitive consumer and operator interfaces for General Sales Application, IBM Supermarket Application, and IBM SurePOS Application Client/Server Environment using XML. No programming is required. Those retailers who have invested in the SureVision GUI PRPQ to create GUIs can protect those interfaces as they move to this new enhanced GUI. Astra GUI (from Version 4 onwards) can take advantage of Store Integrator s Application Extension Facility (both locally and remotely via the Client Session Server). When operating in this Store Integrator-enabled environment existing Astra functionality will be preserved and Astra s user extension mechanism can further utilize the new Application Extension Facility APIs as required. Product positioning As a key component of the IBM Store Integration Framework, complements and extends IBM SurePOS Application Client/Server Environment for 4690 OS, IBM Supermarket Application, and IBM General Sales Application. SureVision PRPQ and 4690 Java GUI/ASTRA PRPQ customers may also upgrade to Store Integrator or Store Integrator GUI for a reduced price using the SI or SI GUI Trade Up part number. AP
