Società Italiana Radio Marittima S.p.A. Integrated Fleet Operations Center in cloud Connected Vessels for Efficient, Safe and Sustainable Operation 24th April

Cloud: a new vision for marine industry The shipping industry is now embracing cloud computing to open new channels for communication between workers around the globe. This cautious industry is now beginning to appreciate the power of cloud computing and the benefits it can bring 2

Cloud: a new vision for marine industry Quick Decision and Actions Common Platform for entire fleet management partners Real Time Information Availability Cost Saving through Efficient management Big Data Analysis Quick Scalability Centralized Knowledge 3

Cloud & IoE: the big Challenge o Through the new platforms in the cloud and the use of satellite connected devices (Internet of Everything), it s possibile to start a process of profound transformation in the fleet management processes o We are ready for the transition from the fleet tracking to integrated operations center, where on board data interact with external information and the company's knowledge database Isolated Operations Connected Operations Integrated Operations Remote Operations Autonomous Operations We are here This is the FUTURE 4

Integrated Operations: the concept Control Integrated Operations Centers enable ship owners to monitor and hence take greater control of their fleet functions from shore Remote Access Engineers, from shore, can connect remotely to any vessel anywhere in the world fitted with specific sensors and dedicated software, facilitating proactive support Data Revolution Each vessel can share data via the satellite connection, which allows ship owners to perform remote diagnostics, integrated operations and to make informed decisions about the ship s performance and route 5

User needs Planning & Optimizzation o Data Collection & Analytics o Reporting & Documentation o Decision support & control Fleet Monitoring o Vessel tracking o Voyage performance o Safe Navigation o Alarm Management Service & Support o Remote control o Decision Support System o Shore based control room o Knowledge base 6

Fleet Operations Center o An Integrated Fleet Operations Center use the new IoE vision to connect ships, their owner s technical headquarters, external partners and stakeholders; o Shipowner can monitor all critical aspects of the fleet and its key performance indicators to achieve the goal of improving the efficiency of the fleet, navigation safety and reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions; o in this modern vision of the connected vessel all onbaord equipment presents a source of vital data enabling the expansion of the companies knowlege base making decisions easier, faster and more informed. 7

Proposed Aproach o The marine industry should apply Industry 4.0 * approach to the maritime world to create Integrated Fleet Operations Centers to improve productivity, be more environmentally friendly and reduce costs o In the SIRM vision, people will control the operations and make decisions based on measurement data from the ship's equipment, as well as uptodate external information such as the meteo forecasts and other relevant data. * 8

The data collection dilemma Three (Four) V s of Maritime Big Data A large quantity of DATA Different form/source of Data Open Problems Conbining vastly different devices and services Volume Variety Functioning continuously despite intermittent communications connectivity Analysis of Data Velocity Veracity Uncertain of Data Make the data comparable and searchable (normalising) Selecting to correct data to store and for how long 11

The data collection solution We propose to address the challenges outlined with an on-board smart gateway and a maritime data collection network (mdcn), a robust infrastructure for discovery, querying, and delivery of Things data; The mdcn architecture specifically addresses the challenges of intermittent connectivity, security, and node heterogeneity. This architecure can scale to a large number of concurrent vessels, pulling data from a vast number of onboard connected things (data sources). 12

Proposed marine Data Collection Strategy MSS VSAT INTERNET Land Earth Station(s) Shore Backhaul VSAT Internet/Intranet Services Deep Data Elaboration Data Storage Transform data in informations mdcn Access Gateway INTERNET Data Collection Data Fusion Light Data Elaboration Efficient Data Transfer (Secure & Compressed) Re-transmission protocols for intermittant links Non Standard Things (dedicated Interface) Standard THINGS (NMEA/CANBUS) Shipowner s Application mdcn Cloud Server INTEGRATED FLEET OPERATIONS CENTER CLOUD BASED 13

Benefit for maritime users Shipowner can monitor a fleet of vessels in a fully integrated way, with low Capex investments thanks to scalable Cloud Infrastructure Centralizing the proactive monitoring of ships health and performance to a center on shore can reduce response time to an incident, brings significant cost and safety benefits to ship owners, as well as increased operational efficiency. Through remote diagnostics from the Operations Center the need to send people on board is reduced, thus saving fuel costs and reducing CO2 emission. Reducing Fuel Consumption and CO2 emissions and ensuring energy efficient operations. 14
