1 Hardware Announcement September 12, 2000 IBM SureMark Printers: Thermal Printers New Single-Station Overview Four new IBM SureMark Printer models will help retailers to attract and retain customers and streamline their operations. Now, both retail and food service environments can enjoy the benefits of the IBM SureMark printers. New models TF6 and TF7 are designed to withstand the rigors of the food service environment, and with full Epson emulation, porting applications is easy. New models TM6 and TM7 are designed to integrate with IBM SurePOS 700 Series and 4694 products for retail customers. These new Single-Station models provide just the right level of function to customers who demand fast, quiet receipt printing (52 LPS), but do not require a document insert station. Available in colors that match IBM s wide range of system units, these compact new models were developed not only to integrate with IBM systems, but also to emulate Epson printers for easy porting of applications. SureMark customers depend upon the reliability, high performance, and high function provided by SureMark. The IBM printer team has designed state-of-the-art functions into the new models providing point-of-sale users with significant improvements in printing speed, quiet operation, open interfaces, and exceptional usability: Printing color thermal papers the new 4610 models, as well as TI3, TI4, and TI5 now support printing color thermal papers. Black plus one accent color can be printed. (Available for current models with a no-charge firmware update via the Web.) Fewer paper changes will be required because the new models all support a 90-mm diameter paper roll. Additionally, customers can now significantly reduce the number of paper changes by purchasing (via an available RPQ) large-diameter 15 inch paper rolls which can be mounted under a counter and fed through a slot in the printer base. Another first from IBM. Customers can now remotely query printers for usage statistics such as the total number of characters printed, etc. Food service customers requirements are addressed via flexible mounting options including an optional wall mount, an audible alarm, the ability to print upside down characters on receipt paper, and spill resistant design. Customers can now further improve the image projected by their receipts with the introduction of TrueType font support. Key Prerequisites Electronic journaling software is required. Printers attach to IBM 4683, 4693, 4694, 4695, SurePOS 700 Series, SurePOS 500 Series, and the IBM POS I/O Attachment Kit RPQ 8Q1238. They will also attach to RS-232 and USB ports on non-ibm POS terminals or PCs. Planned Availability Date September 29, 2000 At a Glance The new IBM SureMark Printers offer: Fast, quiet receipt printing, making transactions quicker to improve in-store customer satisfaction. Support for printing color thermal papers. Black plus one accent color can now be printed. Support for modular interface adapters, RS-232/RS-485 and USB is available, protecting retailers investments. Easy loading paper new model supports a larger (90 mm) diameter roll. Designed for both retail and food service ability to print upside-down characters, wall mounting option, beeper, spill resistant, colors that match the new IBM SurePOS 500 Series. Support for feeding the printer from a very large paper roll, reducing paper roll changes and paper costs. Non-volatile memory and resident barcodes enabling printing of logos, and coupons, opening marketing opportunities for retailers. Usage statistics are now stored in the printer for onsite or remote queries. Both 2 MB and 8 MB non-volatile flash memory options (via RPQ) for temporary storage of transaction data. 2 Description installed printers easily with the latest functions, such as color thermal paper printing or PDF-417 barcodes. Compact, easy-to-use design: With some of the smallest footprints in their class, SureMark Printers give you maximum counter space. Single-station models offer wall-mounting with upside-down printing, so receipts stay right-side up as they exit wall-mounted printers. Simple paper handling makes refills quick and easy. For some models, 90-mm diameter paper rolls are available to minimize paper reloading. High-powered POS performance: These quiet, high-quality thermal receipt printers set a new standard for speed, delivering up to 52 lps for SBCS output and up to 50 lps for DBCS printing. Retailers can complete transactions more quickly, as well as print logos, coupons, and marketing messages on receipts in black or an accent color making the POS printer a valuable marketing tool. Logo and barcode data stored in flash memory can minimize print time. For retailers who need additional memory for failsafe journal storage, an optional 2 MB is available for some models via a request for price quotation (RPQ). TrueType and scalable fonts: SureMark Printers are the only receipt printers available today with TrueType font support--or newspaper style printing. This increases readability dramatically, and creates a host of opportunities for printing longer, more engaging customer messages on receipts. With scalable fonts, characters can be printed up to eight times their standard size for a bold, attention-getting look. Color thermal printing: Customers remember messages printed in color far better than those printed in black. To take advantage of that fact, all SureMark Printers can print on thermal papers that provide one additional accent color, such as red or blue (with a free firmware upgrade). The accent color is used to highlight promotional messages, total savings, loyalty points, and other special information. Single-pass check handling: Model TI4 can perform single-pass check handling in 14 seconds with a single printhead, unlike other devices that must use multiple printheads and ribbons to process the check. Conventional MICR reading, check endorsing and printing are available as well. (For check handling without MICR reading or check flipping, choose Model TI3 or TI5.) One global solution: International and global retailers can use SureMark Printers as a single worldwide printer platform to improve service and support efficiency. These printers are available in a wide range of models, so multinational retailers can select the right model for each geography in which they do business. Since application interfaces are similar for all models, retailers can upgrade Flexible options to protect your investment: SureMark Printers work with a variety of POS hardware, including many non-ibm systems. They support USB and RS-485/RS-232 via modular adapters, so you can upgrade these printers easily if your hardware configuration changes. Select the interface that best supports your current hardware investment, then migrate at your own pace to new platforms such as the IBM SurePOS 700 Series with USB connectivity. Models TM6 and TF6 offer transparent emulation for Epson TM-T88II printers, which makes porting applications easy. These models provide emulation for the receipt station of IBM Model 3/Model 4 Printers, while Models TI3, TI4, and TI5 provide emulation for both the receipt and document insert stations. Customers in Asia Pacific markets where Double-Byte character sets are printed can use existing applications with Models TI5, TM7, or TF7 in SBCS mode and migrate to a DBCS application. These models allow retailers to switch between DBCS mode and SBCS mode electronically, with no mechanical adjustments. In SBCS mode, Model TI5 operates like Model TI3, while Models TM7 and TF7 operate like Models TM6 and TF6, respectively. Multiple printer models supporting many market segments: Models TI3, TI4, and TI5 are well suited for customers who require both receipt printing and document printing. Customers who expect to print checks will benefit from the single-pass check handling feature that is standard on Model TI4. Customers in Asia Pacific markets where Double-Byte character sets are printed will want to order Model TI5. Models TM6 and TM7 single-station thermal printers are ideal for any retailer who does not accept checks. These quiet, high-quality thermal receipt printers deliver the same speed as the popular dual-station models: up to 52 lps for SBCS output (TM6) and 50 lps for DBCS output (TM7). They also offer the same modular interface adapters, so customers can choose RS-232 or RS-485 connectivity now and move to USB at their own pace. Models TF6 and TF7 single-station thermal printers deliver the exact same power and performance as models TM6 and TM7 plus all models include special features designed exclusively for food service and hospitality. They can be wall-mounted, with an upside-down printing feature that keeps receipts right-side up as they exit the printer. They have an audible alarm for kitchen usage, and they are spill-resistant. The primary difference between Models TF6 and TF7 when compared to Models TM6 and TM7 is the cover color. The TFx models are a dark grey color to match the SurePOS 500 Series, while the TMx models are pearl white, to match the SurePOS 700 Series and

In future releases of 4690 OS and its associated applications, many of the new advanced features of the SureMark Printers, like color printing, will be fully supported. Application Requirements Application support for Models TM6, TM7, TF6, and TF7 is provided by IBM Business Partners Installation Utilities The Installation Utility Diskette is available by downloading from the Retail Store Solutions Web page: Select IBM Retail Store Solutions Select support Select IBM SureMark Printers The Utility contains the following: Microcode image and download utility (Microcode is pre-loaded) MICR formats data file and ability to update MICR formats (MICR formats are pre-loaded) (Model TI4 only) Font image creation utility program and download utility (Resident Fonts are pre-loaded) DBCS font files for Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese are available on the web and may be installed in Models TI5, TF7, and TM7 via a DOS utility (RS-232 and RS-485), POSS Suite (RS-485 and USB), and 4690 OS V2R4 when available (RS-485 and USB). The IBM SureMark Printers have the capability to receive 4610 firmware updates from the host system unit to which they are attached for either RS485 (cable number 7) attached or RS232 attached 4610 printers. The following mediums can be used to update the 4610 firmware: 4610 Installation Utility Diskette Firmware Update POSS for Windows 4610 Printer Firmware Update Program 4690 OS 4610 Utility Program Alternative 4610 firmware update method via RS232 attachment cable Compatibility: The SureMark printer Models TM6, TM7, TF6, and TF7 use the same RS-485 interface as Model 3 and 4 printers. The program interface is changed from that of the previous printers. Limitations: Because there is no physical journal station on the SureMark printers, an electronic journaling application is required. Electronic Journaling eliminates the need to store paper journal tapes and the time-consuming task of searching paper tapes should the need arise. Sources of electromagnetic noise (that is, displays, security towers, and so forth) can interfere with the MICR read head on Models TI4. The printer is equipped to filter the noise from many but not all devices. If the MICR reader does not function properly, rearranging the printer relative to the device may improve the MICR reading. The noise source should be located as far as possible away from the right side of the printer OS V2R4 will support the same functions available on the current SureMark printers. In future releases of 4690 OS and its associated applications, many of the new advanced features of the SureMark Printers, like color printing, will be fully supported. Planning Information Customer Responsibilities: The customer is responsible for unpacking the printer and setting it up with their point-of-sale terminal. The customer is responsible for replenishment of consumable supplies, including supply roll paper for thermal printers, inserted forms and ribbon cartridges for impact printing, and MICR read head cleaning cards for printers equipped with MICR readers. The customer is responsible for clearing paper jams, should they occur, and for performing diagnostics.
