3 What is EDGE? EDGE is the Local Portfolio Management System (LPMS) for NIHR CRN: and is used to record Research Capacity & Capability data (project set-up) and Research Activity data (project recruitment) across all 23 Trusts in the region. What are the benefits of using EDGE? Fields for data capture: EDGE provides unlimited bespoke data fields at Organisation, Hospital Site, Project, Project Site and Patient level to ensure you can use EDGE as your sole research management system. Document Management and Sharing: Users with appropriate permissions can upload, download and share documents across all levels either within single or across multiple organisations using EDGE s version controlling, folder templating and accessibility controls. Research Governance Workflows: These respond to the changing demands and challenges of research governance. The workflows function can also be used to manage: Feasibility, Expressions of Interest, Amendments, Finance and more. Patient Data Collection and Management: The system allows users to configure patient workflows against the project site, as well as bespoke patient data fields, to capture vital information for clinical staff, which can in turn be used in reporting. Finance recording and reporting: Users create templates for projects, sites or patients and manage these efficiently in real-time to create reports for invoicing and activity. Project KPIs: A dashboard for each project can be accessed by your organisation to provide a snapshot or overview of performance. Reports: The flexible reporting combinations available within the application bring all the parts of the system together to enable the mining of the exact information you require at any time. Reports include: Time and Target NIHR High Level Objectives (HLOs) Report Sharing Multiple format exporting Patient Monitoring Reports Who should be using EDGE? The majority of users of EDGE are Research Delivery staff based in NHS Trusts who are involved in recording and reporting research activity for the host site where they are 3

4 recruiting patients. The potential for other types of users is flexible, and can be extended to study teams in clinical and academic environments, including PIs. It is used by R&D departments who will have an overview of the research activity within their Trust. EDGE is also used by NIHR CRN: who have an overview of activity across all 23 North Thames NHS Trusts and Primary Care. Aren t we duplicating the same information that s being uploaded to CPMS? EDGE can be used for non-portfolio projects as well as portfolio projects, allowing NHS Trusts to store and manage all research initiation and delivery data in one place. CPMS is used to record national recruitment data for portfolio projects only. Where EDGE is used as a host organisation tool for recording local recruitment for a project, CPMS is used as a sponsor organisation tool for recording national recruitment for a project. Research delivery staff based at the host organisation can record recruitment on EDGE to replace any spreadsheets they may be using, and pull out the information to send to the RAC/Sponsor for uploading to CPMS for portfolio projects. What are the future plans for EDGE? The NIHR Coordinating Centre are developing an interface between EDGE and CPMS. This interface will provide technical functionality for automatically pulling down information from CPMS to EDGE (such as project status) and feeding up information from EDGE to CPMS (such as patient recruitment). Once this function is available, it will mean that RACs/Sponsors will no longer need to upload recruitment to CPMS, which in turn will mean research delivery staff at the host sites will no longer need to send this information to the RAC/Sponsor. When the recruitment data is electronically transferred from EDGE to CPMS, the RAC/Sponsor will have the ability to verify and validate the data within CPMS. 4

5 When will this interface be implemented, and do we need to use EDGE in the meantime? We currently don t have clear timescales for this, but we are in regular contact with the NIHR Coordinating Centre and will provide updates to our Trusts as appropriate. In the meantime Trusts need to begin using EDGE for portfolio projects. Here at CRN we have started using EDGE to record Research Capacity and Capability Data in place of CSP. We require all Trusts to be fully prepared for when the interface goes live and replaces the current process for uploading to CPMS. How do I get started? Every NHS Trust in the region has at least one dedicated EDGE Administrator. This person is usually based in the R&D department. If you haven t been contacted by your administrator for training yet, please contact someone in R&D directly. If you re struggling to find out who your Trust administrator is, please contact the CRN Information Team: eleanor.grant@nihr.ac.uk, ziya.adnan@nihr.ac.uk 5
