1 Software Announcement September 19, 2000 Tivoli Point-of-Sale Manager V2 Enhances Availability of IBM POS Terminals Overview Tivoli Point-of-Sale Manager V2 enables retailers to maximize revenue and control costs by enhancing the availability and management of IBM 4690 Point-of-Sale (POS) solutions in their stores. For retailers that depend on the 4690 POS solution, Tivoli Point-of-Sale Manager extends Tivoli Enterprise s management capabilities to manage POS devices, as part of an innovative end-to-end systems management strategy. This release bolsters the previous version by integrating with Tivoli Software Distribution, Tivoli Inventory, and Tivoli Enterprise Console. Together with Tivoli Enterprise, Tivoli Point-of-Sale Manager creates a powerful management environment that monitors store systems and can respond automatically to system error events, potentially eliminating problems before they result in downtime or affect customer service. The bottom line is less system downtime, reduced help desk costs, and more time for store operations staff to sell merchandise. Tivoli Point-of-Sale Manager V2 is the evolution of the previous product Tivoli Manager for Retail V1. 2 Description Tivoli Point-of-Sale Manager V 2.0 enables retailers to maximize revenue and control costs by enhancing the availability of IBM 4690 POS terminals in their stores. An inoperative POS terminal directly results in the loss of a sale in many cases as customers often don t have the time for store personnel to resolve the problem. In addition to the loss revenue on a sale, problems are compounded with dissatisfied customers and inefficient operations as store personnel attempt to resolve problems. Tivoli Point-of-Sale Manager provides a solution that enables proactive management of POS terminals to ensure their availability, which speeds the checkout process while allowing store personnel to maximize the time spent assisting customers to make purchases. Tivoli POS Manager, with Tivoli Enterprise, creates a powerful management environment that monitors store systems and responds automatically to correct problems before they result in downtime or affect customer service. Integration with the Tivoli Enterprise Console allows this by enabling system administrators to respond to events in the same way they currently respond to events in their backend systems; no additional training is required, other than being aware of IBM 4690 capabilities. Integration with Tivoli Software Distribution further enables system administrators to deploy new applications, operating system updates, and data files to thousands of controllers automatically and remotely. This efficient method of deployment allows for easy packaging, distributing, and installing of software on an enterprise-wide scale. Tivoli Software Distribution uses transaction-based technology to guarantee that all client and server software components are installed in an accurate, error-free, and fully synchronized manner. Integration with Tivoli Inventory makes enterprise-wide IBM 4690 system configuration information readily available to the people who need it by allowing them to automatically scan each system for vital management information. This information is stored in one of many popular relational database management systems, and Tivoli Inventory provides powerful facilities to exploit this data. Tivoli Inventory also enables frequent updates to keep the database accurate, even when the environment is large and network bandwidth is at a premium. Accurate inventory information is vital for administrators challenged with quickly resolving problems and spotting trends. Trends that correlate POS hardware and software configurations with certain problems can be used to determine problem areas with other similarly configured stores to eliminate these problems before they reach critical levels. Historically, most retailers have not been able to integrate the management of store operations with their existing system management solution. For retailer s that depend on IBM s 4690 POS solution family, Tivoli Point-of-Sale Manager extends Tivoli Enterprise management capabilities to manage POS devices, for the first time, as part of an end-to-end systems management strategy. The Tivoli POS Manager solution solves this problem and eliminates the need to support two separate management operations with one comprehensive, completely integrated system-tivoli Enterprise. This program is EuroReady. Euro Currency For more information on the implications of the euro, visit the IBM euro Web site at: EuroReady Products IBM considers an IBM product to be EuroReady if the product, when used in accordance with its associated documentation, is capable of correctly processing monetary data in the euro denomination and of respecting the euro currency formatting conventions (including the euro sign). This assumes that all other products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) that are used with this product are also EuroReady. IBM hardware products that are EuroReady may or may not have an engraved euro sign key on their keyboards. Currently, EuroReady status applies primarily to IBM products specific to the EMU countries. Products that are not specific to these countries are deemed to be not ready for euro unless otherwise stated in the product s country-specific specifications. IBM Hardware Ready IBM supplies certain IBM products which include third party software (pre-loaded or not) and/or third party attached hardware. In these instances IBM is not in a position to assert that these third party products are, in themselves, EuroReady. Therefore, such IBM products will be designated as Hardware ready. EuroReady Solutions IBM considers a solution to be EuroReady when the solution providers have: Analyzed the euro requirements, including the need to comply with relevant EC rules Built in appropriate function and can clearly demonstrate this by: Detailing euro related requirements Describing how these will be implemented in the solution Declaring when the implementation will be generally available The euro capabilities of a EuroReady solution will be clearly identified as features of the Solution specification as described in the contracts document.
