2 A word from the author For a long time, Ukraine kept aloof modern international retail sector. The market was developed mostly by domestic companies. Foreign retailers were discouraged by lack of political stability, high corruption and low consumers incomes. Recently, the improving economic and political situation has made Ukraine worthy destination for international investments, also in retail. Ukraine, along with China and Russia, is one of the most attractive developing countries for foreign investors. Value of retail sales is to grow at a double-digit rate in the coming years. Ukraine is not an easy market for new players, though. Despite the continued low market concentration, there are strong and quickly developing domestic companies in every retail sector. Local players are experienced in dealing with local administration, and know Ukrainian consumers needs. On the other hand, the position of foreign retailers planning to enter Ukraine is not weak.
