INTRODUCTION TO IBM COGNOS TM1 WORKSHOP OVERVIEW This workshop provides an introduction to Cognos TM1. You should be able to work through the workshop in less than a half of a working day. During this time, you will become familiar with the key Cognos TM1 concepts. This workshop uses a simple, generic example so we can focus on the functionality of TM1. Please feel free to ask questions about how the material covered in the workshop can be applied to your business processes. Intended Audience With TM1, there are four roles (to match the roles in the planning process): Administrator manages the technical deployment of applications (e.g. security) Modeler designs and builds models, maps data flow and applies business logic Contributor views reports and may input data into templates Explorer views reports and presentations (e.g. Executives) This workshop is designed for the Modeler IBM Corporation 100

UNDERSTANDING OLAP AND MULTIDIMENSIONALITY What is OLAP? On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) is a category of software tools that provide analysis of data stored in a database OLAP tools enable users to analyze different dimensions of multidimensional data. For example, it provides time series views. With OLAP, data is stored in cubes, which are made of two or more dimensions. Each dimension has a hierarchical structure. OLAP tools are very efficient at handling multidimensional data and performing aggregations or roll-ups. Due to their multidimensional capabilities, OLAP tools are perfect for analyzing business models. With TM1, you can create multidimensional databases that provide business and finance instant meaning from complex, dynamic business models IBM Corporation 101

UNDERSTANDING OLAP AND MULTIDIMENSIONALITY To better understand multidimensionality, consider the example of the Vice President of Sales for a retail company who wants to analyze product sales across a retail chain that operates in the United States and Canada. Each retail store records the unit sales, dollar sales, and discounts for the durable consumer products. The sales are analyzed by product, scenario (actual versus budget), region, measures (units, dollar sales, and discounts), and week. Using spreadsheets (2 dimensional view), the report may look something like this for Week 1: 2011 IBM Corporation 102

UNDERSTANDING OLAP AND MULTIDIMENSIONALITY Now try adding a third dimensional perspective like time (e.g. Week 2 and YTD). Using spreadsheets, we can simply copy our template to create views for various points in time and link our spreadsheets to create a YTD view. This works well for the limited amount of analysis being done here, however laying out dimensional data in this way would become cumbersome as the number of dimensions being examined increased and as the number of items in each of the dimensions increased IBM Corporation 103

UNDERSTANDING OLAP AND MULTIDIMENSIONALITY TM1 OLAP Solution TM1 is an OLAP tool with: Powerful database engine (TM1 Server) Familiar user interface Excel add-on Web browser In the VP Sales Report example, what we have identified is a five-dimensional model. The dimensions identify how the data is organized or how the types of data are tracked. In TM1, the sales analysis can reside in one or more multidimensional structures called cubes. A collection of cubes forms a database. Each data point in a cube is identified by one element in each dimension of the cube; for example, actual dollar sales of dryers during the second week of January in the Boston store. With TM1, the user can analyze different dimensions of multidimensional data, like time, without the redundancies and reconfigurations associated with spreadsheets IBM Corporation 104

TM1 Technology 2011 IBM Corporation 105

Workshop What You Will Build in this Workshop We will be building an expense account budget template for end user interaction. We use all the basic components of TM1 during this exercise. The expense template will contain four dimensions and one cube. You will learn more about these terms as you go through the workshop. VM Log On ID: Administrator Password: cognos Conventions Used in this Workshop Bold Text (Blue) is used for user input. Beginning the Workshop Before you can begin this workshop, make sure the TM1 Server called workshop is running on your machine. It should be minimized in the lower left corner of your screen. The exercises are all contained in the workbook and the instructor will also demonstrate the exercises 2011 IBM Corporation 106
