Get the most from your requirements with Modelio WEB Analyst. Web Analyst is a very innovative requirement analysis tool that allows you to obtain the maximum added value from your requirements. 1
Modeliosoft belongs to the SOFTEAM Cadextan group, a major player in the field of object technologies and one of the first European companies to become a voting member of the OMG ( in SOFTEAM Cadextan is actively involved in the definition of standards and has a large-scale R&D operation. Based in Paris in France, Modeliosoft provides a complete range of consulting and training services in Enterprise Architecture (notably by providing TOGAF certification), BPM, software modeling and MDA customization of the Modelio tool, so that you can adapt Modelio to your context and your organization. SOFTEAM Cadextan has branches throughout France, providing consulting, services and training around Modelio products. In the field of Enterprise Architecture, SOFTEAM Cadextan is a member of "The Open Group" ( Modelio s architecture is based on that of its predecessor Objecteering, which was a market forerunner. Modelio has been a cutting edge modeling tool in the field of model-driven development for 20 years. Now Modelio Web Analyst has been launched, providing an unrivaled support for Requirement Analysis. We will see why. 2
Modelio / Web Analyst technology gives you access to your requirements from anywhere and using a broad range of tools. Web Analyst is a light client interface that allows you to manage requirements from any web browser. Requirements can also be handled with the Modelio tool, which incorporates therequirements into its modelling capabilities and maintains complete traceability. Reverse generation services also allow you to access your requirements from Microsoft Word and Excel. Web Analyst includes a teamwork management tool that helps teams cooperate and handle versioning and helps project managers manage projects, roles and stakeholders. 3
Different stakeholders use different tools. Web Analyst has a very simple interface (tabular form) allowing anyone who is granted access the right to make changes to the requirements themselves. Modelio is a modeling tool dedicated to analysts and architects. External stakeholders who are not granted a license or access rights can simply use Excel nor Word documents generated by Web Analyst, and update them. 4
From Web Analyst, users generate Word or HTML format documents. These documents can be customized according to the client s methodology and requirements. They are managed synchronously with the requirements versions and accessed via a document portal. Modelio helps you deal with all kinds of modeling aspects - processes, applications, components, tables, business objects, etc. - that are linked with requirements. Finally, tables and documents produced by Web Analyst can be edited by external stakeholders. 5
Beyond the capacities of premium requirement analysis tools, Modelio provides exclusive capacities on the market. Its federated repository that enables links and references between worldwide autonomous and distributed repositories. Its integrated support of «Vision» definition (Strategy, motivation), The fact that requirements can be simultaneously accessed from a simple web browser interface, and from a modeler. A general purpose traceability support. 6
As opposed to classical ALM suites, no coupling/ Integration/ duplication / import-export : requirements are just shared within a common repository. They allow a collaborative work between all participants, whatever tool and localization. 7
Requirements can be traced to/from any element from a project, such as technical components, tests, analysis element, Requirement driven project realization can thus be conducted. Requirements coverage can be conducted, (e.g. does an architecture properly covers requirements?) test coverage can be realized, This is a remarkable tool to improve the quality of projects, under objectives and measurable goals. 8
Several approaches (in particular for Enterprise architecture) recommend to clarify the system s vision, by specifying goals, by providing the terminology or by identifying risks, All these features are covered by Web Analyst. This enhances the usage scope of the tool and ensures traceability from the very beginning of the system s definition. One can for example assign a goal to a process, and specify its KPI from the objectives. Supporting Vision elements reinforces requirement analysis by providing justification and requirement discovery means. Governance of an IS consists firstly in defining goals to the IS, which are related to the enterprise s strategy. This approach allows for defining how the IS will contribute to providing value to the business. A risk relates a danger to its occurrence probability, its gravity and its acceptability. Risk analysis provides inputs to requirements and/or goals, helps identifying risks scenarios and concerned components, and clarifies consequences. Traceability facilitates risk management and the definition of the system that integrate risk analysis results. Defining a Glossary (set of terms) clarifies a business domain. Ambiguities on concepts definitions hampers domain practitioners, and results in wrong interpretations by analysts, architects and developers. Only the domain s knowledge is required for defining the glossary. Defining the glossary with Modelio allows to trace model elements, to improve the model s consistency, to measure the domain s coverage, and to obtain clear and non ambiguous documentations. Business Rules are high level structured statements that constrain control or influence one aspect of the business. A business rule can influence decision making in the course of business. Business rules help in automating business processes and providing clear rules to the IS that supports the business. 9
Using Vision elements reinforces requirement analysis by providing means to justify or discover requirements. For example we see that, in the diagram below, the requirement «IS Access via the web site» guaranties the satisfaction ofanenterprise s goal. In general, Goals, risks and business rules are elements that can be refined into requirements. Terms (Glossary) reinforce the global domain consistency. 10
Modelio Web Analyst is a very powerful tool for traceability management. Based on the large variety of elements in its repository, Modelio ensures a complete traceability coverage. Traceability links can be drawn within diagrams. They can be browsed and handled within a dedicated link editor They can also be handled using a matrix views within Modelio. Matrixes can be generated within documents. 11
Modelio s repository can be decomposed into «model fragments» which are single autonomous repositories that can be distributed and inter-related. In this example, a fragment contains security requirements, one other contains requirements related to risks. These fragments are dedicated to the enterprise. A dedicated fragment is dedicated to the new «system X» system. At the subsidiary company level, a fragment contains dedicated requirements, that are related to the local context. The Subsidiary system analysts only have a read access to the requirements defined at the global enterprise level. The green area delimitates the project from the subsidiary business analysts viewpoint. This is supported by the «Constellation» tool that manages projects and fragments portfolios and participants roles and profiles. A model realized by architects is based on the requirements, and here defined as a new specific fragment. Fragments can be focused on requirements only, and accessed by Web Analyst and Modelio, or can be focused on modeling only and be managed by Modelio. Constellation allows thusto decompose a project into areas in order to : Separate levels or layers (i.e. Enterprise; sub-system; local level) Define participants, their roles and rights Manage dependencies between levels (arrows in thediagram) Manage repositories :localization, storage, responsibilities, version management. 12
The major projects failure cause is a poor requirement management. Clearly formalizing requirements allows to define what has to be implemented and how it will be checked. It allows to trace and justify the entire set of project s elements. 13
Web Analyst provides a great and unique requirement management tool. It has an impressive and very advanced capacity to share between participants, to manage traceability, to manage repositories and to realize requirements and documents. 14
You can evaluate on line Modelio Web Analyst : You will enter in a requirements definition project, defined in the cloud, in which you can provide your changes and where you will be able to generate your own documents. If you want to evaluate Web Analyst with Modelio, contact us. (sales@modeliosoft.com) 15
