Big Data in Transportation: Connected Vehicles Source USDOT Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) represent the integration of advanced communications technologies into the transportation infrastructure and in vehicles in order to improve transportation safety and mobility. Connected Vehicles (CV) represent the future of transportation in which vehicles will exchange data in real-time with other vehicles (V2V) and roadside infrastructure (V2I).
Big Data In Transportation: Smart Cities The Smart City represents the full integration of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) and smart sensor technology into a city s transportation network.
Big Data in Transportation: Probe Data Traditional forms of traffic detection are increasingly augmented by probe- and image-based methods to estimate real-time traffic conditions. Source USDOT
Big Data in Transportation: Social Media Mobile apps represent an emerging source of traffic state and driver information through the transmission of device location and other personal data.
Big Data in Transportation: Safety and Mobility Source WisDOT Left: The WisDOT Statewide Traffic Operations Center (STOC) control room provides 24/7/365 traffic monitoring, traveler information, and traffic incident call center capabilities. Right: The CODES system provides linkages between police crash reports and hospital records to analyze costs and safety impacts of injury crashes.
Big Data in Transportation: Research and Analysis Source NHTSA Source USDOT Left: The SHRP2 Naturalistic Driving Study Dataset contains over 2 Petabytes of in vehicle sensor and video data for over 4 million trips by study participants. Right: The Crash Data Improvement Program (CDIG) honeycomb diagram for safety data integration.
