Permanent Dynamometer PDM Artificial Lift The Leutert Permanent Dynamometer is designed to permanently monitor rod pumping units. The system allows the operator to optimize the production and protect his equipment.

The Design A Dynamometer measures the operation of a rod pumping system. A dynamometer card shows the position of the polished rod (x-axis) versus the load on the rod string (y-axis). Dynamometer cards are the main tool to determine the status of the rod pumping system. The Leutert Permanent Dynamometer (PDM) records and displays these surface cards. The cards are redrawn with each complete stroke. The dynocards can be sent to the office via wired or wireless network. With the Leutert Dycomaster software installed on a laptop, on-site measuring of live data is also possible. The PDM also automatically switches off the pumping unit if preset limits are reached. The Leutert PDM consists of four components: load sensor, stroke sensor, current sensor and the data acquisition unit. The data acquisition unit is installed near the pumping system and connected to the sensors installed on the pumping system. Main features of the Leutert PDM system: Improvement of pump efficiency and elimination of fluid pound Analysis of the pumping unit and detection of malfunction to prevent damage Alarms, when preset limits are reached Cost reduction Data storage via USB stick Continuous recording and the possibility to compare dynamometer diagrams Flash memory for quick updates without hardware changes Explosion proof according to ATEX Wireless / wired remote access (TCP/IP based) 4 20 ma, unsusceptible to interference, allows very long connection cables UPS protected power supply Real-time on-site measurements (dynocards, valve check, counterbalance) Real stroke measurement, no value assumption Stroke sensor (PDM) Walking beam Horse head Samson post Pitman Bridle V-Belt Crank Load cell (PDM) Dynamometer (electronic) Prime mover Gear reducer Counter weight Polished rod Stuffing box Xmas tree Oil Data acquisition unit (PDM) Gas Motor current (PDM) (to pump station) Technology for controlling rod pump wells 2 Permanent Dynamometer PDM

The Load Cell The load cell is located at the polished rod string below the polished rod clamp. It measures the polished rod load and transmits this data to the data acquisition unit. It represents the load portion of the dynamometer card. Dimensions : Ø 3.9 x H 6.5 (Ø 100 mm x H 165 mm) Measuring range : 0 to 14 t, 0 to 22 t Signal : 4 to 20 ma Transmitter : 2-wire transmitter with ATEX The Stroke Sensor The stroke sensor, a single axis inclinometer, is mounted on the walking beam of the pumping unit. It measures the position of the polished rod as the pumping unit is in operation. The stroke sensor also transmits to the data acquisition unit. It represents the stroke portion of the dynamometer card. Dimension : 5.5 x 5.5 x 3.5 (140 mm x 140 mm x 90 mm) Measuring range : ± 45 Signal : 4 to 20 ma Transmitter : 3-wire transmitter The Current Sensor The current sensor is attached to the power connection cable of the pumping unit motor. It records the power consumption of the motor throughout the whole stroke, allowing for more accurate analysis of the systems and early recognition of problems that may occur. The connection cable to this sensor may be up to 50 m long. Dimension : 3.5 x 2.2 x 2.8 (90 mm x 55 mm x 70 mm) Measuring range : 4 to 200 A Signal : 4 to 20 ma Transmitter : 3-wire transmitter Permanent Dynamometer PDM 3

The Data Acquisition Unit The heart of the PDM is a microcontroller aided fixed installation data acquisition unit. All data are recorded and processed in this unit. It is typically installed very close to the pumping system. Electronics : Embedded microcomputer Power supply : 100 to 240 V with internal UPS Total error : < 1.5% Input signal : 4 to 20 ma, 2- and 3-wire system Degree of protection : IP 67 / NEMA 6 Stroke range : 0 to 250 in (0 to 635 cm) Current range : 0 to 200 A Dimensions : 19.7 x 15.8 x 15.8 (500 mm x 400 mm x 400 mm) Remote Data Transmission System (SCADA) The PDM can be connected to any existing ethernet network (TCP/IP based) for remote data access. In case no network connections are available, secure remote access can be realized via VPN tunnel using GPRS (EDGE)/UMTS routers. Leutert supplies field tested and pre-configured router hardware installed in the PDM field-housing. All 4 20 ma signals as well as limit values can be fed into an existing telecontrol sytem without a TCP/IP-based network. The Software The software for the Leutert Permanent Dynamometer is a sophisticated data acquisition program that allows to record dynamometer cards and traces, motor amp plots, counterbalance effect and traveling and standing valve checks. After the measurement the data can all be examined in the office or at site. Each set of measurement can be saved in a single well file that contains all measured data of a specific well. This makes it easy to manage the data. To understand the history of a well, the dynocards can be compared in an overlay. For further analysis the recorded data can be easily implemented into existing analyzing software such as Theta. 4 Permanent Dynamometer PDM

Overview Dynamometer card Recorded current measurement Valve test Dynamometer card comparison Portable Dynamometers Any permanent dynamometers or pump-off controller cannot replace portable dynamometers. Portable dynamometers are essential to set-up a permanent dynamometer or pump-off controller. Portable dynamometers are necessary to check the calibration of the load cell as this may shift during operation. Permanent Dynamometer PDM 5
