Assets such as tools, infusion pumps, wheelchairs, IT equipment, handhelds, and mobile test equipment can be tracked and monitored to gain visibility into asset inventory levels, use, behavior, and overall life cycle. Even personnel and patients can be tracked to monitor workflow and improve safety. Real-Time Asset Locator monitors asset movement to automatically identify important events that are forwarded to IBM Maximo Asset Management or Tivoli Asset Management for IT. These events provide real-time visibility of asset behavior and enable enhanced asset life-cycle and maintenance management. You can leverage this real-time data to solve multiple business problems related to asset location, condition, inventory levels, and loss. For example, you can optimize preventative maintenance based on in-use status and location; reduce loss of equipment by monitoring exit zones; and better manage equipment inventory levels to help ensure availability in one location while reducing excess in another. Real-Time Asset Locator works with third-party sensor subsystems that provide raw data about asset location. Data is usually in the form of a unique ID and x, y, and IBM United States Software Announcement IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 2

3 possibly z coordinates. Sensors may also provide condition information or signals for general events such as a button press. Real-Time Asset Locator interprets the raw data to map it to a business location and associate it with a specific asset. It also assigns meaning to general events. For example, the button press may be mapped to an event indicating that maintenance is required for a given asset. Real- Time Asset Locator monitors these raw data streams to identify significant business events and may generate a notification for the event or forward it to the asset management system for asset updates or to initiate additional tasks. Real-Time Asset Locator supports a variety of rule-based scenarios for tracking asset movement and behavior. Some scenarios are dependent on the underlying sensor technology, and not all scenarios are supported by all technologies. Scenarios can be added or extended using the provided tooling. The following sample scenarios are supported: Entry/exit of assets to/from virtual zones Loss detection Fall detection or man down Wandering patients Movement of non-moving assets Movement of asset to maintenance zone Identification of idle assets Real-Time Asset Locator hides the complexity of heterogeneous sensor technologies by providing normalized location and status events to the application logic. The normalized sensor event streams are then monitored using advanced business event processing to detect event patterns that indicate that an actionable business event has occurred. These higher-order events are forwarded to Maximo Asset Management or Tivoli Asset Management for IT to update location or status and to initiate appropriate workflows. Real-Time Asset Locator provides business event processing through the bundled WebSphere Business Events. WebSphere Business Events helps identify actionable situations to enable timely insights and responses. Additionally, WebSphere Business Events includes Web-based design tools that can be used to easily tune the rules and event patterns that drive operational processes and business logic. Real-Time Asset Locator can support active RFID (ultrasound, UWB, WiFi, and Infrared), passive RFID (Gen2 Standard, UHF, and HF), and barcode as well as other condition sensors. This technology-agnostic approach enables users to select the most suitable technology for their needs or even to mix technologies when appropriate. Real-Time Asset Locator leverages the Maximo Integration Framework to provide real-time updates on asset location and status to Maximo Asset Management or Tivoli Asset Management for IT. Location and status change events flow into the asset management system through the IBM Maximo Adapter for Real-Time Asset Locator. In turn, the asset management system can be configured to trigger workflows to take appropriate action based on the location and status changes.
