2 RVN uses rich security to distribute graphical images to remote (collaborative) clients called endstations. SVN will support multiple high-resolution monitors or projectors for immersive visualization. Key prerequisites Select IBM IntelliStation graphics workstations and IBM servers with Microsoft Windows or Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and OpenGL. Planned availability dates January 26, 2007: Electronic download February 16, 2007: CD media Description Deep Computing Visualization will run on Microsoft Windows XP or Red Hat Enterprise Linux on IBM graphics workstations and applicable servers. New in V1.3 is support for a Windows solution, offering RVN visualization support only. The prior release of Deep Computing Visualization supported the Windows OS as clients for use as RVN endstations only. With V1.3, the Windows OS is supported on the application and rendering node. Additional functions are available for both the Linux and Windows OS. Support for OpenGL up through V2.0 provides added support for language extension and improvements through and including V2.0. This includes shader programming, which allows for GPU programming and added functionality. With the 1.3 release, IBM is improving usability and performance of the Deep Computing Visualization interface. Deep Computing Visualization, v1.3 can provide better responsiveness for high latency (long distance) applications with reduced protocol overhead, reduced CPU overhead, improved Deep Computing Visualization performance (due to general and specific optimization), optimized Deep Computing Visualization code paths, and network latency sensitivity coding. For Scalable Visual Networking (SVN): IBM IntelliStation A Pro or Z Pro workstations IBM System x 3950 or 3755 systems NVIDIA* Quadro* FX family of ultra-high-end graphics adapters Cisco Topspin 120 InfiniBand network interconnect Software requirements: Any of the following operating systems: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0, Workstation Edition, Update 7, or later update (with availability of appropriate drivers) Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0, Workstation Edition, Update 3, or later update Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 (32-bit) RealVNC Enterprise Edition (refer to Deep Computing Visualization product README for requirement details) IBM United States Announcement IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 3

4 Support for multiple viewers of the RVN component requires an X Windows viewing capability provided by RealVNC, Ltd. For MPI, the following is supported: TopSpin driver Scali SMC plus Fix SSP44 Compatibility: For the SVN component, all nodes in the rendering cluster and the node on which the application runs, must be running the same version and address mode of Linux, that is, either all 32-bit or all 64-bit. Limitations For SVN, having both 32-bit and 64-bit applications on the same cluster is not supported. For SVN, 32-bit applications only run on the 32-bit version of Linux and 64-bit applications only run on the 64-bit version of Linux. For RVN, support is limited to 8 collaborative endstations. Performance considerations: Performance of the RVN component of Deep Computing Visualization is dependent on the responsiveness of the user interface and on the of simultaneous viewers (up to eight are supported if an X viewer is used). Windows XP endstations require user installation of an X server, such as is available from Cygwin. Performance of the SVN component of Deep Computing Visualization is dependent on the speed of the interconnecting network and on the of rendering servers used. Planning information Customer responsibilities Acquire and set up the hardware, including configuring the graphic adapters and displays Acquire and set up the interconnect network, including software Acquire and install the MPI implementation for SVN Create and distribute public keys if OpenSSH is chosen for secure access for SVN Packaging: This program is available via CD-ROM media or electronic download via Passport Advantage. 5 Ordering information This product is only available via Passport Advantage. It is not available as shrinkwrap. Product Group: Other Software Product Identifier Description (PID) IBM Deep Computing Visualization (5724-K69) Product Category: System Software Charge Metric Program name or PID Charge metric Deep Computing 5724-K69 Processor value units Visualization Software charges and maintenance for Deep Computing Visualization only apply to the host visualization cluster performing graphics rendering. There is no software charge for the component software that enables a thin client (called an endstation) to work as an RVN pixel receiver. Deep Computing Visualization supports up to eight endstations concurrently for collaboration. These endstations do not have any software charges applied, nor maintenance support. Value unit: A value unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements, which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements, such as users, client devices, and messages. The of value unit entitlements required for your specific implementation of the given program must be obtained from a conversion table associated with the program. You must obtain a proof of entitlement (POE) for the appropriate of value unit entitlements for your implementation. The value unit entitlements of a given program cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with value unit entitlements of another program. A processor (commonly called a CPU or core) is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multi-core technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processors require the same of value unit entitlements. To determine the of value unit entitlements required, refer to the processor value unit conversion table on the Passport Advantage Web site With full capacity licensing, a proof of entitlement (POE) must be acquired for the appropriate of value units based on all activated processors on the server available to the program or a component of the program.
