1 TEM DEPLOYMENT MODELS: WHAT ARE THE TRENDS? EXCERPT An Analyst Perspective Report from AOTMP s Telecom Expense Management Research Practice By: Timothy C. Colwell, Senior Vice President, Efficiency First Adoption Scott Lawrence, Vice President & Senior Research Analyst Andrew Hartwyk, Senior Research Director Kelly Teal, Editor-in-Chief

2 INTRODUCTION Telecom expense management (TEM) vendors offer different ways to deploy their products through technology-only, host-and-load, managed services, full business-process outsourcing, and so on. This Analyst Perspective report explores the various models and also dives into what enterprises are deploying the most. That way, their peers can compare and contrast approaches to assess the model that works best for them. The sidebar below lays out the most common TEM deployment models and sets the stage for the remainder of this report. Common TEM Deployment Models Technology-Only (Software Only, Not Very Common): The vendor provides software-as-a-service (SaaS) or on-premises software, the enterprise performs all the work. Technology plus Host-and-Load (Most Common Software Only Configuration): Via SaaS, the vendor loads carrier invoices while the enterprise handles all other work. Technology and Managed Services (Partially Managed): Through SaaS or onpremises software, the vendor does everything specified in the statement of work, while the enterprise handles whatever the vendor does not. Business Process Outsourcing (Fully Managed): The vendor assumes all TEM workstreams such as invoice processing and the enterprise receives the results. Notably, AOTMP Research has found that 32 percent of organizations using a TEM vendor solution of some kind report an increase in full-time employee efficiency and productivity gains because of the relationship. And, organizations with a TEM vendor realize an average cost savings of 9 percent on fixed/wireline services and 12 percent on mobile/wireless. This report discusses the models enterprises say they use the most and least, and provides guidance for organizations either deciding to implement TEM for the first time or change deployment methods.
