4 Gaining speed, efficiency, reliability, and security When the company first introduced its hospitality industry software suite, it was an MS-DOS/Clipperbased application that ran on Novell Netware. As software industry standards progressed and customer performance and reliability expectations grew, Data Devices decided to convert the suite to run in a Microsoft Windows environment. 5 Meeting the criteria for performance and support Data Devices evaluated several database options to power its enhanced software suite, including Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and SAP Sybase ADS. After considering these options, says John, we selected SAP Sybase ADS. It met all of our criteria and more. Also, very important to us, we were looking for a database backed by a vendor that would provide direct developer support rather than online forum support. And it requires virtually no maintenance, which is very important to our clients, most of whom do not have database administrators. Moreover, SAP Sybase ADS is not a resource hog, which also keeps the cost of ownership and operation affordable. And its built-in replication functionality allows our customers to move data from one database to another, ensuring that accurate, up-to-date information is available wherever it is needed. Other factors that figured into Data Devices choice of SAP Sybase ADS were its ability to efficiently replicate data over low bandwidth connections (as low as 256 kpbs), its low-cost hardware requirements, the fact that it doesn t require much user training, and its ability to integrate with various back-end servers. 7 Major improvements and significant cost savings Embedding SAP Sybase ADS into our integrated hospitality management solution has enabled us to meet our objectives in migrating to the Windows environment, says John. The software is very stable and maintenance free. We re able to install our solutions very quickly and without complications, and we ve experienced significant savings on support and service.
