8 The basics of industrial painting of claddings - Industrial painting started in In Norway there has been a lot of problems with painting of claddings on construction place - VTT research (1992) showed that the time between planing and painting had big influence to adhesion - Today over 85 % of claddings is painted industrially in Scandinavia

10 Wood humidity and pitch We see following value adding timber industry products interesting for Teknos Humidity of wood 1. Outdoor claddings humidity % Interior panels Windows, doors, mouldings Flooring boards 7 Pitch After a tree is chopped down, it has 4-6 weeks time to be processed to make the product ready (windows, panels). Such a short time causes problems with knot yellowing. Pitch don t have time for crystallisation. This is an actual problem especially when the tree is chopped down in spring (spring wood) Resins are water soluble, which means that at high humidity and high temperature the yellowing is more common

11 Industrial painting of claddings in Finland In Finland the painting of claddings on construction place is regulated by RYL 2012 Industrial painting is regulated by RT Industrial painting has to happen in 60 hours after planing After painting the painted panels has to be stored 24 hours inside Primer has to be mainly alkydbased paint, application min. 50 g/m 2 There need to be instructions for transportation, storing and service painting in every package Controlled even quality Stable conditions and controlled process Industrial topcoating mainly with acrylic paints Today almost all the claddings in Finland are at least industrially primed At the moment over 30 % of claddings are also industrially topcoated CE-marking is obligatory from for claddings at EC

15 INDUSTRIAL CLADDING SYSTEMS FEATURES Industrial painting has to be done controlled way on to the dried wood. As a base product, alkyd primer is giving the best adhesion into the wood. Topcoats are often acryl based products giving good colour shade and gloss. Paint system is giving long maintenance properties and pursuits paint breathing properties, flexibility, adhesion, weather durability, colour and gloss stability. Last paint work is always proposed to be done at the house building site.

Following issues after industrial painting During transportation and storing remember to protect the panels against machanical damages, dirt and high humidity Transportation and storing can not be done under heavy load (max. 2 packages on each other) Stacking paintfilms face to face is risky. The conditions during transportation and storing have big impact on the result. Package card gives instructions for transportation, storing and further treatments Cutted edges has to be painted at the construction place at least twice When doing further treatment or service painting, the most important thing is to take care of conditions (temperature degrees, humidity %)
