Case Study: Portage Path Community Learning Center in Akron, Ohio The new construction of the Portage Path Community Learning Center was an opportunity for this inner city elementary (K-5) and Community Learning Center to continue as a source of stability and support for this Akron, Ohio neighborhood. There was great potential in this project to incorporate locally-funded and community-funded initiatives above the base Ohio School Facilities Program of Requirements, said John T. Wheeler of Braun and Steidl Architects, Inc. Situated on a small triangular site, the architects took care to arrange the building layout with internal spaces designated for both elementary and Community Learning Center usage.

5 Case Study: Portage Path Community Learning Center in Akron, Ohio (Continued) Designed to accommodate 435 students, a two-story classroom wing provides separation from the community oriented spaces used after school hours. Larger public restrooms, a media center, art and music rooms and multipurpose classrooms orientated to the main entrance, allow for mutual use of a variety of spaces. One design highlight, a large compass, incorporates multiple tile colors in the central hallway on the ground floor. For the flooring, the building owners were interested in a beautiful and clean-looking floor that would allow for color and a unique design to be incorporated into each space. A low-voc product with a long lifecycle was also desired by both the owner and architects. Johnsonite s Prima Marbleized Rubber Floor tiles were chosen for their durability and ease of maintenance. Initial premium cost of the product is offset by its life cycle costs, said Wheeler. Rubber sustainability and low VOC installation also contributed to its selection. Johnsonite s custom capabilities allowed the designers to select their own colors to meet the owner s desire for a unique design, throughout the facilities classrooms, gymnasium and corridors. The result is 41,000 square feet of Prima Marbleized Rubber Floor tiles, in bright primary colors, accented with Johnsonite Traditional Wall Base, and Raised Square treads and risers. Rubber s accurate and true cut manufacturing process allowed the installer to provide a good installation. The flooring will also allow the facility to eliminate the maintenance of waxing and stripping with caustic chemicals, adds Wheeler. What is NSF Certification? The NSF/ANSI 332 Sustainability Assessment Standard for Resilient Floor Coverings is a standard that was created to identify the environmental performance and sustainability attributes of products and to provide a methodof tracking incremental changes to the products' sustainability profile. Using a point-based system, the NSF 332 standard measures five key areas: product design, manufacturing, long term value, corporate governance and innovation. When audited against the NSF 332 standard, a product may achieve up to 100 possible points. The product must gain a minimum of 25 points to receive a Conformant level of certification. The remainingthree

6 What is NSF Certification? (Continued) The remaining three levels of certification include: Silver (35 points), Gold (45 points) and Platinum (60 points). Several Johnsonite products also are scheduled to certify under NSF 332 this year and in Johnsonite looks forward to ensuring its ongoing product development and manufacturing improvementsin order to provide the ultimate flooring experience. For further information on the specific details of the NSF/ANSI 332 Sustainability Assessment Standard for Resilient Floor Coverings, visit: Myth Busters : Making An Impression! If you had to pick which could do more damage to a resilient floor, would you pick a 4,000-pound car or a 100- pound woman? It all depends on her choice of shoes! A woman who weighs 100 pounds and is wearing stiletto heels has a static load of 2,000 pounds per square inch (PSI), if she is standing on a resilient floor. However, the significantly heavier car that weighs 4,000 pounds has a static load of only 45 PSI (depending on the size of the tires). Although the car is much heavier, the surface area of the tire disperses the car s weight. On the flip side, the tip of the woman s stiletto heel that touches the resilient floor contains a very small surface area, making the static load of the 100-pound woman much higher than the 4,000- pound car. Talk about making an impression!
