4 16 Hire Depots - Serving South, West & North of England SONDE (MOUSE) In typical usage the Sonde is screwed onto the end of a set of drain rods or conduit threading rod, inserted into the pipe to be traced and thus propelled along the pipe. An operator on the surface can follow the movements of the Sonde using a receiver in the transmitter mode and operating on the matching frequency. If the purpose of the procedure is to find a pipe collapse, the movement of the Sonde will stop at the point of blockage and the signal radiating at the point will indicate where to dig to repair the pipe damage. Signal strength is adjustable for greater selectivity or longer distance tracing.
