4 Section bdi@colegsirgar.ac.uk Leadership and Management LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR Although the construction sector is seeing an increase in the number of individuals with higher level qualifications, management training and development is relatively low. Investment in a structured management development programme for new starters and existing managers will improve line manager capability, employee engagement and performance. Management development in construction companies should particularly focus on effective communication, collaboration, influencing, coaching, employee engagement, performance management, delegation and managing multiple teams and external stakeholders. (ILM 2015) Coleg Sir Gâr has a successful track record over many years in delivering Leadership and Management qualifications to all sectors. Where we differ is that our staff have worked in the various sectors and understand the day to day challenges in the real world and have operated in a variety of management roles. The Construction sector is realising the importance of people development at all levels and a wide range of qualifications exist from a number of awarding bodies including ILM, CMI, CIOB and others. The key to developing strong leadership and management staff skills is speaking the language of the industry. Our trainers contextualise the delivery to the sector using examples from the sector, rather than a theoretical outline (although the basics of management do come from other sectors). 3

6 Section 2 Lean Construction Programmes WHAT IS LEAN CONSTRUCTION? Lean Construction is a combination of operational research and practical development in design and construction with an adaption of lean manufacturing principles and practices to the end-to-end design and construction process. Unlike manufacturing, construction is a project based-production process. In its simplest sense Lean or Business Improvement is the elimination of waste from a process which has a direct impact on the bottom line. Various tools and techniques are applied that remove the 7 wastes: Waiting Motion Over-Processing Over-Production Transportation Inventory Correction We have numerous courses from short one day introductions to full NVQ Diplomas in Business Improvement Techniques delivered by sector specialists. NVQs are project based qualifications delivered on site and focus on applying the tools and techniques to your company. Metrics are used at the start and end of programme to demonstrate efficiencies made translated into financial gains. Short programmes tend to be open courses that allows learners to understand the principles of lean that they can then apply in their place of work. Specific programmes are also delivered to meet your company needs that concentrate on problem areas. In order for this to be effective, lean should be applied on a daily basis, it is not just a training course, it has to be part of your daily regime. A good example of how lean is applied was the construction of the 2012 Olympic Village. A case study can be found by clicking on the link below. Olympics Legacy link 5

10 Section 4 Health and Safety Programmes HEALTH AND SAFETY Health and Safety is critical to the Construction sector and the requirements for contractors are set out in the HSE booklet HSG150 Third Edition 2006 (click on the link to access online version). The document outlines the duty of care at every stage of the construction process, from the initial planning stages to setting up the site to the construction phase and finally the law. To support this bible for the sector we offer a wide range of Health and Safety courses to ensure that staff are trained appropriately. We have a wide range of courses available that cover most aspects of Health and Safety training. The courses overleaf show the most common programmes, however there are more specialist programmes available such as Working in Confined Spaces which we also offer. 12 Section 5 Environmental Programmes ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRUCTION This is an area of the Construction sector that is becoming more and more prominent and regulated. Environmental Issues Specific to Construction: Waste Management Energy and Water Emissions to Air Discharges to Water and Land Use of Raw Materials Nuisance Environmental Planning We offer both training and consultancy in this sector across a number of awarding bodies. Some of the Waste Management programmes are delivered via the OSAT model i.e. no attendance at college. As environmental legislation is becoming more and more important to the sector, many companies do not realise that they may be in breach of legislation through not having staff with the appropriate qualifications. For example, any construction site that is carrying non hazardous waste (which most do) require a manager on site with the L4 Certificate in Waste and Resource Management. The penalties are extremely high - 50,000 as a starter for noncompliance and in extreme cases prison. There is no maximum fine! We also ensure that the respective award meets environmental agency officers requirements with reference to the risk tier table and the site operation. Additionally, we offer consultancy in this area that includes ISO accreditation training and preparation. 11

14 Section 6 Innovation INNOVATION JOURNEY Innovation is NOT just about developing new products to take to market. Definition: Coleg Sir Gâr has an enviable track record in supporting companies through the Innovation process. We are currently supporting over 50 companies from all sectors on this journey. It isn t quick but as most companies require additional funding to help them develop ideas we can help simplify the process and bring together the right teams of experts at each stage. Innovation is the development of a new Product Process or Service... that is NEW to the company. It can already exist elsewhere. Most companies innovate only once, successful companies constantly innovate. Currently, Innovation is high on the agenda of the European and UK governments with an eye watering 80 billion euros available through many programmes. 13

15 Innovation Whatever stage you are at in the process we have the knowledge and expertise to take you to the next level. Contact the BDI team to see how we can support you. It may be a case of needing new equipment that technologically is more advanced than what you are using - this is eligible for funding. It may be a new widget - that is eligible too. We look at each case on its own merits as the journey is not a linear path and advise on the best possible route... 14

16 Section 7 Funding Support FUNDING SOURCES Eligibility criteria apply to all funding sources. If we were to list all the funding available across the UK and Europe, this ibook would be hundreds of pages long. Most funding depends on where you live, where you work, whether you are a company or an individual or whether its for training or business support. The list provided is a movable feast so contact the team for more information. In Wales, there is a new pot of European funding available until 2020, in England the focus is more on regional pots (LEP). If we know what your specific requirement is, we should be able to guide you down the best route. Contact the team on
