2 1 Module Title Home Repairs And Maintenance 2 Module Code N Level 4 4 Credit Value 1 Credit 5 Purpose This module is a statement of the standards to be Achieved to gain a FETAC credit in Home Repairs and Maintenance. It is an elective module for the Level 4 Certificate. It is essential that learners be encouraged and offered the opportunity to participate actively in all elements of Home Repairs and Maintenance. 6 Preferred Entry Level Level 3 Certificate, Junior Certificate or equivalent qualification and/or relevant life and work experiences. 7 Special Requirements Access to material and equipment and appropriate tools. 8 General Aims Learners who successfully complete this module will: 8.1 Use Plumbing, Electrical, Tiling, Painting and Decorating tools and equipment confidently. 8.2 Be competent in the selection and use of appropriate materials. 8.3 Demonstrate the practical skills and techniques of Plumbing, Electrical, Tiling, Painting and Decorating. 8.4 Apply the skills and techniques acquired in real life. 8.5 Work safely according to Health & Safety Guidelines. 9 Units The specific learning outcomes are grouped into 5 units Unit 1 Unit 2 Unit 3 Unit 4 Unit 5 Plumbing Electricity Tiling Painting & Decorating Health & Safety 2

3 10 Specific Learning Outcomes Unit 1 Plumbing Identify various fittings and materials used in domestic plumbing Identify water storage equipment used in domestic plumbing Identify various components of domestic central heating systems Make joints using compression and soldered fittings Cut and bend copper pipe and Qualpex using appropriate tools. Unit 2 Electricity Identify various cables used in domestic wiring Wire a plug top according to correct colour codes Fit and connect socket outlets Fit and connect light switch Fit and connect light fittings. Note Unit 3 All of the above would be carried out in accordance with Health and Safety Guidelines. Therefore none of the above would involve Live situations. Tiling Measure and assess an area Prepare surfaces previous to tiling Set out area in preparation for tiling Apply adhesive and fix tiles Fix various tile trims Apply grouting. Unit 4 Painting and Decorating Prepare an area prior to painting e.g. masking, dust sheets, furniture preparation Carry out repairs, filing and sanding Fix plasterboards and apply bonding and skim coat Identify colour wheels and discuss primary and secondary, warm and cold, dark and light Apply emulsion paint using brush and roller cut in Apply oil based paints using brush and roller cut in. 3

4 Unit 5 Health and Safety Identify the adverse physical, chemical, biological and psychological effects of common hazards on the human body Recognise common hazards symbols and labels Know the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees as specified in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act Have due care for safety of customers and their property. 11 Portfolio of Assessment Please refer to the glossary of assessment techniques and the note on assessment principles at the end of this module descriptor.
