2 Introduction Our newly developed rheological additive RHEOLATE 75 is a hydrophobically modified alkali swellable thickener (HASE) designed to give efficient mid-to-high shear build. It is particularly aimed for low cost mid-to-high PVC latex paints and is solvent-, VOC- and APEO-free. The use of RHEOLATE 75 provides excellent film build, levelling and resistance in interior Matt and Satin finishes. The RHEOLATE 75 meets the performance of leading HASE thickeners. Key Benefits Cost effective for mid-to-high PVC latex paint Provides excellent mid-to-high shear build Reduces spattering during roller application Product positioning low shear (Note: in the net or spider diagram, the higher the value, the better the performance.) high shear (HASE) RHEOLATE 50 (HASE) Chemical and Physical Data Incorporation Composition Appearance Viscosity Acrylic emulsion in water Milky white liquid 20 mpa.s (Brookfield, 25 C, 00rpm) ph value ca. 2.5 Non-volatile content 30 % Solvent Water Specific gravity ca..05 Levels of Use The typical levels of use for RHEOLATE 75 are 0.5 % to 2.0 % (as delivered) by weight in paints or inks. Higher dosages might be required in adhesives and sealants. It is advised to run a ladder test to determine the most suitable dosage before use. RHEOLATE 75 is an alkali swellable thickener and requires proper ph adjustment with an alkali (like ammonium hydroxide or amino methyl propanol) for complete activation. In a typical latex paint, a ph of 8-9 is usually recommended. Addition is normally made in the let-down or towards the end of the formulation process. At this stage RHEOLATE 75 can be added slowly to the formulation under good mixing without dilution. Under slow speed mixing conditions, dilution with water (RHEOLATE 75: water ratio : to :5 by weight) is recommended to ensure efficient activation of the additive and to avoid shock. RHEOLATE 75 can also be used alone or together with other rheological additives to achieve ideal performance properties. 2

7 General application comparison 5 Performance comparison of, RHEOLATE 50 and the low shear mid shear high shear RHEOLATE 50 RHEOLATE 75 is specially designed for the mid-to-high shear rate range. This provides excellent film build and levelling together with outstanding resistance to. RHEOLATE 50, on the other hand provides excellent low shear build and so imparts good sag resistance. RHEOLATE 50 is more shear thinning than RHEOLATE 75. Both thickeners are very cost effective for mid-to-high PVC latex paints. Summary The use of RHEOLATE 75 HASE rheological additive provides excellent paint application properties: Superb thickening, especially for mid-to-high PVC latex paints, based on commonly used binder technologies Noticeably reduced Very good balance of flow and levelling RHEOLATE 75 matches or surpasses the performance of the leading in a range of typical latex systems.
