39 RIVERSIDE CEMETERY and HALL MEMORIAL CHAPEL RESTORATION Waterbury, Connecticut LANDSCAPE RECOMMENDATIONS Martha Lyon Landscape Architecture, LLC Several trees throughout the cemetery have died or are in decline. These should be removed and eventually replaced with a diversity of tree species. The wooded slopes along the east side form a screen between the cemetery and elevated Route 8 structure. These should be maintained. Many cemetery roads, especially those that traverse steep slopes, experience ongoing and often severe erosion. These should be re-surfaced with reinforced turf. The elevated Route 8 structure, edging the cemetery s east side, introduces a modern, harsh intrusion into the cemetery and should be screened. Many graves have been ornamented with gravesite plantings which, when mature can overtake a grave marker, creating maintenance problems. These should gradually be removed. Invasive plant species, such as poison ivy vine (overtaking this brownstone monument) should be removed, and an ongoing program to control re-growth should be implemented. The existing wrought iron fence lining Riverside Street is in good condition and should be preserved through rust removal and re-coating. Many long views, possible from high points throughout the cemetery should be preserved and enhanced.
