3 LATVIAN SUSTAINABLE BUILDING COUNCIL (LSBC) - founded at the end of 2010 by (mostly) private sector enterprises - 12 full and 9 associate members - partnering with municipal, state and NGO sector, including - Riga City Architect s Office - Latvian Ministry of Economy (separate projects) - Latvian Architects Union, Latvian Union of Engineers

4 LSBC member of the World Green Building Council (WGBC) - WGBC is a network of 90 national green/ sustainable building councils worldwide with more than 5000 members in 5 continents *through national memberships

5 LSBC vision and mission - our vision is to find Latvia amongst the countries with sustainable economies, with sustainable policies and practice as an export good, in our mission is to increase the sustainability of building sector policies and practice in Latvia

6 LSBC main activities - Information and education Implemented through our monthly info leaflet, regular articles in professional media, various seminars/events. The newly developed course Green Building Professional to be launched this autumn will be a source of professional knowledge from A to Z - Policy work A policy group organized under LSBC has a close cooperation with a similar task force under WGBC. Direct assess to EU Parliament and resources from policy processes worldwide, the group is to assist Latvian decision-makers to formulate sustainable building sector policies. - Technical support to building sustainability A technical group organized under LSBC has been instrumental in adapting BREEAM (a Latvian version of BREEAM Commercial on-line from 1 st October, 2012). The group to have a general overview of sustainability criteria and their development.

7 BREEAM-LV: A TOOL An environmental assessment method developed by the British Research Establishment (BRE) BREEAM-LV is an adaptation of BREEAM Europe Commercial 2009: applicable to new or reconstructed office, retail of light industry; adapted legislation and standards; adapted credits in ecology, water and some other sections 95% similarity to original all registrations for BREEAM Commercial buildings in Latvia are required to use the adapted version available on-line for BREEAM assessors all around the world

12 BREEAM-LV: FIRST RESULTS 2 officially registered (office) buildings more registrations in the pipe-line target levels: BREEAM Pass to BREEAM Very Good generally correspond to developers standards generally, showing good results in categories: energy efficiency materials (material specification) land and ecology others more dependent on the specific project

15 LSBC learnings With respect to sustainability, the Baltic states is largely one market with many of the same companies and a similar (current) knowledge level. The green building initiatives in the 3 countries should cooperate in at least the following: marketing of events education
