1 CHBA MODULAR 216 ANNUAL REPORT OCTOBER 217 FactoryBuilt Conditions The CHBA Modular Construction Council conducts a survey of producers of factorybuilt homes called the CHBA Modular Construction Survey. Altus Group analyses the data produced from the CHBA Survey and provides information as to the evolving position of factorybuilt buildings within the Canadian construction sector. Highlights from 216: In 216, the value of factorybuilt building production in Canada (residential and nonresidential combined) was slightly over $1.6 billion, up about 3.5% from 216 and above the recent 5year average. Factorybuilt units accounted for about 11.5% of all singlefamily homes started in 216, a decrease compared to 215. Some 12,336 factorybuilt singlefamily homes were started in 216, down about 12% from a revised 14,49 units in 215; overall singlefamily starts (both factory and sitebuilt) increased by 7%. 2 NATIONAL INDUSTRY INDICATORS Construction Industry Residential construction investment (a number inclusive of new housing construction, renovation investment and acquisitions costs) advanced 2% in 216. Conversely, total construction spending declined 3% (after inflation) from the previous year. This marked the second straight annual decline. Construction spending was negatively impacted by declining investment in the energy sector in (5.) (1.) (15.) Overall, housing starts in Canada increased very modestly to 197,915 units in 216 up about 1.2% from the previous year. Manufacturers are certified to Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards. As of January 217, 161 firms in Canada, the U.S. and China were identified as certified builders of prefabricated buildings, modules and panels under the CSA A277 standard. In 216, 17 firms participated in the CHBA Modular Construction Survey, representing an effective response rate* of 22%. In 216, factorybuilt building production, installation and other related activities generated more than $5.4 billion in economic activity, helping to support more than 26, fulltime equivalent jobs in Canada. The industry was also responsible for generating some $622 million in federal and provincial taxes.
