1 LINK 500 CONCEPT RAILTRACK LAYER Making railway tracks easier, safer and faster to construct in emerging economies like India Indian Railways has grown 10-fold in the last 50 years, but rail track length has only increased 1.4 times & construction methods have hardly changed. The aim was to design the future of railway-track construction in developing countries. LINK 500 is a machine which makes constructing railway tracks easier, safer and faster in emerging economies like India. It lays prefabricated concrete slabs cyclically along a GPS mapped route. It takes the heavy work and human error away from railway construction. Instead the workers focus on rough and light work, whereas the machine focuses on linking together 500 meters of higher quality track per workday. BENEFITS Unlike traditional solutions, the structure of this machine allows it to pass over a material-carrying train. It can easily be assembled & transported in a standard ISO shipping container. It requires no temporary tracks to be laid because it uses pneumatic tyres hence eliminating a big step logistically.

2 THE CHALLENGE! 3 sites in India 10 days 10 expert interviews How might we improve railway construction in developing countries like India? Better alternative?! Contextual research On site observation Interviews Validation with experts Neelon Pune Ballast Track Slab Track! Worker safety Quality Time Manual system is just continuing because of requirement of less capital for contractor and simplicity of operation, in spite of bad quality. -Sr. Track Engg., Indian Railways INDIA Bengaluru Ballasted track is a tried and tested method, but it is not the perfect method and it needs to be replaced with a better one. Slab tracks are safer, low maintenance, can handle heavier & faster trains and are cost effective in the long term.

Instead the workers focus on rough and light work, whereas the machine focusses on linking together a higher quality track. GPS ROUTE Cyclic system to achieve 500 meters of track laying per day 1. Link500 picks track slab from material train 2. Moves over formation carrying slab ASPHALT/CONCRETE FORMATION DOWEL PREFAB CONCRETE SLABS 3. Arms lower slab 4. Slab placed between detected dowels Step 1 PICK pre-fab SLAB Step 2 Apply over formation/base structure 5. Cycle is repeated

5 CONCEPT RAILTRACK LAYER GUIDING SENSORS HYDRAULIC ARMS DOUBLE PIVOT (SCISSOR JOINT) OPEN OPERATOR CABIN (roll over protection) GRAVITY SLAB CLAMP ACCESS Structure allows the vehicle to go over material carrying train. Further using pneumatic tires allows no auxiliary tracks to be laid. Saving a huge step in the process ENGINE HOUSING IN HUB MOTORS ALIGNMENT / GUIDING SENSORS HYDROSTATIC DRIVE TELESCOPIC SELF LOCKING BEAMS STRUCTURE Compact wheelbase allows LINK 500 to be versatile and easy to transport. It can be dis-assembled and shipped in a standard ISO shipping container. At the same time it can carry the prefabricated slabs with stability and good weight distribution OPERATOR CABIN The roll-over-protection-structure cabin provides good visibility to focus points and also has a remote operation unit. EFFICIENCY Cyclic system to achieve 500 meters of track laying per day CONSISTENCY Accurate placement of prefabricated concrete slabs SAFETY GPS guided route ensures track geometry & reduced operator workload MOVEMENT Heavy lifting done by Link 500. Slabs are lifted using gravity clamp and the double pivot joint
