What is Silicone Structural Glazing? Two or four sided bonding of glass lites and/or panels of lightweight stone or metal, to a building s structural frame in order to support the transfer of dynamic windloads from the external glass façade, through the silicone sealant, to the internal structural framing of the building. Stuart Wakeham, Johannesburg April 19,

Substrates Authorised Anodised Aluminium Polyester powder or PVDF coated Aluminium. Stainless Steel. Glass. Lightweight stone Forbidden Mill finish aluminium Mild steels PVC Wood Stuart Wakeham, Johannesburg April 19,

Substrates Only Use Approved Substrates Approved Substrates to be Adhesion Tested Silicone supplier will then ; 1. Advise on cleaning method/solvent 2. Advise if primer is required 3. Issue an adhesion test report to go on the project file Stuart Wakeham, Johannesburg April 19,

Other Glazing Components Check List Silicone Supplier will review the drawings to ascertain ; IG Sealant Silicone? Weather Seal High Movement/Neutral cure /Recommended for SSG? U Channel checked for adhesion Setting block compound? Spacer is it tape or is it gasket? + Must Must Must Silicone Compatible? Gasket Compound? Silicone Compatible? Tape Open Cell? If closed; Cure time of single component silicone? Stuart Wakeham, Johannesburg April 19,

Other Glazing Components Red Flags! 1. Weatherseal ; non-filled alkoxy, acetoxy, not specifically recommended for A façade or SSG can attack the primary seal (PIB). Can affect the SSG. Stuart Wakeham, Johannesburg April 19,

Other Glazing components Incompatible Weather Seal Oils and gases from the Weather Seal can pass through the IG secondary silicone and soften the PIB primary seal to the point where it runs down the inside of the unit. The IG unit is ruined Stuart Wakeham, Johannesburg April 19,

Other Glazing Components Red Flags! 2. Setting blocks and gaskets, EPDM, Neoprene, PVC, not specified as silicone compatible. Can affect the Structural bead dramatically! Stuart Wakeham, Johannesburg April 19,

Other Glazing Components EPDM gasket Compatibility Testing of Gasket ETAG A UV Radiation UV exposure can act as a catalyst accelerating or worsening the reaction of the silicone in contact with the gasket therefore tests are done with and without UV exposure Stuart Wakeham, Johannesburg April 19,

Other Glazing Components EPDM Gasket Stuart Wakeham, Johannesburg April 19,

Other Glazing Components EPDM gasket On the left is a piece of sample gasket with freshly applied silicone, bonded to a piece of clear glass In the centre is a similar sample after having undergone compatibility testing and on the right is as second tested sample shown through the glass You will note the white silicone has turned brown after testing. This colour change is caused by oils or plasticizers from the gasket leaching into the silicone. We use a white control silicone as this effect is not always noticeable on black structural silicone. Colour change is not the only issue, usually once contaminated the effected silicone will lose adhesion with the glass. Stuart Wakeham, Johannesburg April 19,

Solutions Conclusions Do not view a sealant or adhesive as a commodity item. It is a small percentage of the total cost of a façade but can make all the difference between success and serious failure Be aware that within the SSG assembly there are several compounds be employed, each with different Physical and possibly chemical characteristics If in doubt TEST Stuart Wakeham, Johannesburg April 19,

Solutions Conclusions Use the expertise of your sealant / gasket supplier if they don t offer the support you require find another supplier Use suppliers who can supply the whole package of materials, hence many of the compatibility questions will have already addressed and answered Stuart Wakeham, Johannesburg April 19,
