1 ROADGUARD Form P-135 (9/91) Chip Resistant Coating DX 54 IDENTITY CODE ROADGUARD Chip Resistant Coating DX 54 BACKGROUND Many late model automobiles feature a chip resistant coating on the lower body sections that are prone to gravel and stone impact. The coating itself is usually color coated at the factory. ROADGUARD was developed for use in restoring the protection and appearance of the original equipment when repairs to these areas are necessary. ROADGUARD can also be used on any car where this feature is desired. DIRECTIONS FOR USE Preparation: There are two situations where ROADGUARD may be used: 1. Repair of an existing finish when the coating is already present. The existing special coating and original color must both be removed from the entire panel to be refinished. Failure to do this will result in an excessively thick film. The use of a heat gun, like one available through PPG under code HG-501, and a metal putty knife work very well. Follow-up with a lacquer thinner wash to remove all traces of this special coating. 2. Repair of an existing finish without the special coating and the addition of ROADGUARD is desired. In the above cases, whenever bare metal is exposed, PPG's DP Epoxy Primer must be applied to the cleaned and metal treated surfaces. The areas normally utilizing this special coating are high corrosion areas and DP Epoxy Primer provides the strongest corrosion resistance properties, as well as insuring ROADGUARD's adhesion. Note: ROADGUARD is not recommended for use over any primer other than DP Epoxy Primer. 1 Form P-135 (9/91)

2 Mixing: When using a siphon feed gun, mix 1 part DX 54 to ¼ part DTL 876 Thinner (1:¼) Example: DX 54 DTL 876 Thinner 1 part 1/4 part or to or 1 quart 8 oz. Application and Dry Times: 1. Adjust air pressure for 35 PSI at the gun for siphon feed gun. 2. Apply 4 wet coats (2-3 mils per coat). 3. Allow 5 minutes dry time between coats at 70 F (21 C). 4. The final coat of ROADGUARD DX 54 should be allowed to dry a minimum of 1 hour or a maximum of 24 hours before topcoating. 5. Apply final topcoats as per label directions. Note: Increasing or reducing the amount of thinner used will result in reducing or increasing the pattern (texture) of ROADGUARD. Over Thinning = Pattern Diminishes Under Thinning (Siphon Feed Gun) = Pattern Increases Higher Air Pressure = Pattern Tightens Lower Air Pressure = Poor Atomization Gun Distance Too Far = Coarse Pattern Gun Distance Too Close = Smooth Pattern Caution: A. ROADGUARD does not adhere to bare metal. B. Topcoat colors must be applied directly to ROADGUARD because other undercoats do not adhere to ROADGUARD. C. If pinholing occurs, you should add more thinner, decrease the air pressure or move the gun closer to the surface. Note: When using a pressure feed system no reduction of ROADGUARD DX 54 is necessary. Apply 2-3 wet coats. For best results set gun pressure at 35 PSI and the pot pressure at 12 lbs. Equipment Cleaning: Spray guns, gun cups, storage pots, etc., should be cleaned throughly after each use with (#) DX 590 All Purpose Clean-up Solvent or DTL Acrylic Lacquer Thinners.
