1 SPECIFICATIONS - CARPET TILE PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. This Section includes modular, tufted carpet tile. B. Related Sections include the following: 1. Division 9 Section "Resilient Wall Base and Accessories" for resilient wall base and accessories installed with carpet tile. 1.3 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. Include manufacturer's written data on physical characteristics, durability, and fade resistance. Include installation recommendations for each type of substrate. B. Manufacturer s Data: Submit data showing compliance with specified requirements, including independent laboratory test reports per CRI TM 101 for Appearance Retention Rating, physical characteristics, durability and flame resistance, along with manufacturer s instructions and recommendations for installation. C. Shop Drawings: Show the following: 1. Columns, doorways, enclosing walls or partitions, built-in cabinets, and locations where cutouts are required in carpet tiles. 2. Carpet tile type, color, and dye lot. 3. Type of subfloor. 4. Type of installation. 5. Pattern of installation. 6. Pattern type, location, and direction. 7. Pile direction. 8. Type, color, and location of insets and borders. 9. Type, color, and location of edge, transition, and other accessory strips. 10. Transition details to other flooring materials. D. Samples: For each product and for each color and texture required. Provide full sized sample of tile. Label each Sample with manufacturer's name, material description, color and pattern. 1. Sample submittals are required before preparation of Architect s Interior Color Schedule and Color Boards. E. Maintenance Data: For carpet tiles to include in maintenance manuals. Include the following: 1. Methods for maintaining carpet tile, including cleaning and stain-removal products and procedures and manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule. 2. Precautions for cleaning materials and methods that could be detrimental to carpet tile. F. Warranty: Special warranty specified in this Section. 1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: An experienced installer who is certified by the carpet manufacturer and the Floor Covering Installation Board and who can demonstrate compliance with its certification program requirements. 1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Comply with CRI 104, Section 5, "Storage and Handling."

2 CARPET TILE B. Warning: When carpet tiles with unprotected, pre-applied adhesives are provided, the carpet tiles must be stored and stacked according to the manufacturer s instructions. Failure to follow the manufacturer s stacking instructions can result in damage to the pre-applied adhesive. 1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Comply with CRI 104, Section 7.2, "Site Conditions; Temperature and Humidity" and Section 7.12, "Ventilation." B. Environmental Limitations: Do not install carpet tiles until wet work in spaces is complete and dry, and ambient temperature and humidity conditions are maintained at the levels indicated for Project when occupied for its intended use. Utilize portable HVAC and dehumidification equipment to maintain indicated temperature and humidity levels until the date of Substantial Completion when permanent HVAC equipment is operating. C. If manufacturer recommends adhesive installation, do not install carpet tiles over concrete slabs until slabs have cured and are sufficiently dry to bond with adhesive and concrete slabs have Ph range recommended by carpet tile manufacturer. 1. Maximum Moisture Evacuation: 3.0 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. in a 24 hour period. 2. Acceptable ph Range: Between 7.0 and 9.0. D. Where demountable partitions or other items are indicated for installation on top of carpet tiles, install carpet tiles before installing these items. 1.7 WARRANTY A. Special Warranty for Carpet Tiles: Written warranty, signed by the carpet tile manufacturer agreeing to repair or replace components of carpet tile installation that fail in materials or workmanship within 10 years from the date of Substantial Completion. Failures include, but are not limited to, more than 10 percent loss of face fiber, edge raveling, snags, runs, loss of tuft bind strength, dimensional stability, excess static discharge, and delamination. B. Installer s Warranty: Written warranty, signed by the carpet installer, agreeing to repair or replace carpet tiles that are not free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of one year from the date of Substantial Completion. 1.8 EXTRA MATERIALS A. Furnish extra materials described below, before installation begins, that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents. 1. Carpet Tile: Full-size units equal to 5 percent of amount installed for each type indicated, but not less than 10 sq. yd. (8.3 sq. m). PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 CARPET TILE A. Acceptable Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, products that may be incorporated into the Work include the following: 1. Collins & Aikman: Fraction or Median 2. Interface Flooring Systems: Cubic and Cubic Colours 3. Lees Commercial Carpets: Hancock Park as basis for specification requirements. 4. Mannington Commercial: Odyssey 5. Milliken Carpet: Remix, Freestyle 6. Shaw Contract Group: Captivate B. Fiber Content: 100 percent nylon type 6 or 6, 6. C. Pile Characteristic: Level-loop or Multilevel loop. CARPET TILE

3 D. Dying Method: Solution dyed, space dyed. E. Pile Thickness:.135 inches for finished carpet tile. F. Stitches: Not less than 13.0 stitches per inch. G. Gage: Not less than 1/12 gage. H. Surface Pile Weight: Not less than 18 oz./sq. yd. I. Coloration: Minimum 5 color hues, and hue values to be in optimum light reflectance range for soil hiking enhancement. J. Primary Backing/Backcoating: Manufacturer's standard composite materials. K. Secondary Backing: Closed cell vinyl, Thermoplastic or polyurethane laminate. L. Antimicrobial: Manufacturer's standard M. Appearance Retention Rating: CRI TM 101 Severe. N. Size: 24 by 24 inches (610 by 610 mm) or 36 by 36 inches (914 by 914 mm). O. Performance Characteristics: As follows: 1. Critical Radiant Flux Classification: Not less than 0.45 W/sq. cm. 2. Dry Breaking Strength: Not less than 100 lbf (445 N) per ASTM D Tuft Bind: Not less than 10 lbf (45 N) per ASTM D Delamination: Not less than 3.5 lbf/in. (15 N/mm) per ASTM D Dimensional Tolerance: Within 1/32 inch (0.8 mm) of specified size dimensions, as determined by physical measurement. 6. Dimensional Stability: 0.2 percent or less per ISO 2551 (Aachen Test). 7. Colorfastness to Crocking: Not less than 4, wet and dry, per AATCC Colorfastness to Light: Not less than 4 after 60 AFU (AATCC fading units) per AATCC 16, Option E. 9. Electrostatic Propensity: Less than 3.5 kv per AATCC INSTALLATION ACCESSORIES A. Trowelable Leveling and Patching Compounds: Latex-modified, hydraulic-cement-based formulation provided or recommended by carpet tile manufacturer. B. Adhesives: Water-resistant, mildew-resistant, nonstaining, pressure-sensitive type to suit products and subfloor conditions indicated, that complies with flammability requirements for installed carpet tile and is recommended by carpet tile manufacturer for releasable installation. 1. VOC Limits: Provide adhesives that comply with the following limits for VOC content when tested according to ASTM D 5116: a. Total VOCs: mg/sq. m x h. b. Formaldehyde: 0.05 mg/sq. m x h. c. 2-Ethyl-1-Hexanol: 3.00 mg/sq. m x h. C. Edge Strips: Resilient rubber to match base, of height required to protect exposed edge of carpet tiles, and of maximum lengths to minimize running joints. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine substrates, areas, and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for maximum moisture content, alkalinity range, installation tolerances, and other conditions affecting carpet tile performance. Verify that substrates and conditions are satisfactory for carpet installation and comply with requirements specified. Examine carpet tile for type, color, pattern, and potential defects. B. Concrete Subfloors: Verify that concrete slabs comply with ASTM F 710 and the following: CARPET TILE

4 1. Slab substrates are dry and free of curing compounds, sealers, hardeners, and other materials that may interfere with adhesive bond. Determine adhesion and dryness characteristics by performing bond and moisture tests recommended by carpet tile manufacturer. 2. Subfloor finishes comply with requirements specified in Division 3 Section "Cast-in-Place Concrete" for slabs receiving carpet tile. 3. Subfloors are free of cracks, ridges, depressions, scale, and foreign deposits. C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 PREPARATION A. General: Comply with CRI 104, Section 6.2, "Site Conditions; Floor Preparation," and with carpet tile manufacturer's written installation instructions for preparing substrates indicated to receive carpet tile installation. B. Use trowelable leveling and patching compounds, according to manufacturer's written instructions, to fill cracks, holes, depressions, and protrusions in substrates. C. Remove coatings, including curing compounds, and other substances that are incompatible with adhesives and that contain soap, wax, oil, or silicone, without using solvents. Use mechanical methods recommended in writing by carpet tile manufacturer. D. Broom and vacuum clean substrates to be covered immediately before installing carpet tile. E. When carpet tiles with pre-applied adhesive are specified, follow manufacturer s instructions for damp mopping substrates prior to carpet tile installation. F. INSTALLATION G. General: Comply with CRI 104, Section 14, "Carpet Modules," and with carpet tile manufacturer's written installation instructions. H. Installation Method: As recommended in writing by carpet tile manufacturer. I. Maintain dye lot integrity. Do not mix dye lots in same area. J. Cut and fit carpet tile to butt tightly to vertical surfaces, permanent fixtures, and built-in furniture including cabinets, pipes, outlets, edgings, thresholds, and nosings. Bind or seal cut edges as recommended by carpet tile manufacturer. K. Extend carpet tile into toe spaces, door reveals, closets, open-bottomed obstructions, removable flanges, alcoves, and similar openings. L. Maintain reference markers, holes, and openings that are in place or marked for future cutting by repeating on finish flooring as marked on subfloor. Use nonpermanent, non-staining marking device. M. Install pattern parallel to walls and borders. 3.3 CLEANING AND PROTECTION A. Perform the following operations immediately after installing carpet tile: 1. Remove excess adhesive, seam sealer, and other surface blemishes using cleaner recommended by carpet tile manufacturer. 2. Remove yarns that protrude from carpet tile surface. 3. Vacuum carpet tile using commercial machine with face-beater element. B. Protect installed carpet tile to comply with CRI 104, Section 16, "Protection of Indoor Installations." C. Protect carpet tile against damage from construction operations and placement of equipment and fixtures during the remainder of construction period. Use protection methods indicated or recommended in writing by carpet tile manufacturer. END OF SECTION PART 1 - GENERAL RESILIENT FLOORING & BASE

5 1.01 DESCRIPTION This section covers resilient flooring and accessories including: Vinyl composition tile Rubber base 1.02 SUBMITTALS: A. Product Data: Submit 2 copies of manufacturer's technical data and installation instructions for each type of resilient flooring and accessory. B. Samples: Submit, for verification purposes, samples of each type, color, and pattern of resilient flooring, including accessories, required, indicating full range of color and pattern variation. C. Replacement Tile: After completion of work, deliver to project site replacement materials from same manufactured lot as materials installed one box for each 50 boxes for each type, size, and color installed JOB CONDITIONS: A. Maintain minimum temperature of 65 deg F (18 deg C) in spaces to receive resilient flooring for at least 48 hours prior to installation, during installation, and for not less than 48 hours after installation. Store resilient flooring materials in spaces where they will be installed for at least 48 hours before beginning installation. Subsequently, maintain minimum temperature of 55 deg F (13 deg C) in areas where work is completed. B. Install resilient flooring and accessories after other finishing operations, including painting, have been completed. Do not install resilient flooring over concrete slabs until the latter have been cured and are sufficiently dry to achieve bond with adhesive as determined by manufacturer's recommended bond and moisture test. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 Manufacturer: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products of one of the following:
