4 Adhesives Products How to Apply Epoxy Floor Coating Paint Floor coating with epoxy paint before After proper surface preparation, application technique is the next most important step in floor coating. First you must assess the mix ratio of the product you are using. All Dynamis epoxy products have simple or mix ratios. You mix either 1 unit of part A by volume to 1 unit of part B by volume or you mix 2 units part A by volume to 1 unit part B by volume. Our simple mix ratios allow you to easily measure out partial kits if you will not be coating enough floor to use an entire kit. Our EPO Coat H3H 100% solids epoxy coating system has a mix ratio. Mixing Epoxy Floor Paint After making note of the mix ration, you must find measuring containers and a mixing container. Ideally you ll want a separate measuring container for part A and part B. You should then mix each component thoroughly in its original container in case the material has separated, to ensure a good mix. Measure out your components into the mixing container observing the proper mixing ratio. Once measured out, it s best to use a drill with a mixing blade to ensure a thorough mix. Stir with the drill for 2-3 minutes. Then carefully scrape the sides and bottom of the container with the mixer and then stir for another 1-2 minutes. After mixing, it s important to note that some epoxy coatings require a sweatin time of minutes. This helps to achieve a more rapid and thorough cure for a slower-curing product once the material is on the floor. Our EPO Coat H3H 100% solids epoxy coating system does not require this sweat-in period. After mixing, and the sweat-in period if necessary, you must choose a roller. For epoxies you will generally want to choose a roller with a very short nap, 1/8 to ¼, with a phenolic core. This type of roller will hold up and won t shed hairs into your beautiful new floor even as the epoxy becomes thicker and stickier as it approaches the end of its working life. Finished Application Roll the coating out observing the approximate coverage information for the specific coating that you are using. It s important not to stretch the material too thin as it will simply soak into the concrete and leave you with very little external protection or aesthetic effect. On bare concrete you will want to apply two coats, the first one thinned with acetone or MEK (please check your local laws to ensure that this is legal at your location) to provide a solid mechanically-bonded base coat. When going over an existing epoxy floor that is mostly intact one coat will generally suffice. If applying two coats, the second coat can be applied as soon as the first coat is dry to walk on and tack-free. Once rolled, remove any masking as soon as possible to avoid it sticking to the freshly coated floor. You will be able to walk on it after 8-12 hours, but avoid any car or forklift traffic for 72 hours to avoid leaving tire marks. If you follow these steps you will have a very durable epoxy floor that will take a lot of abuse and look very good at the same time.

5 Surface Preparation Best coating system only as good as the surface it is applied to Acid-etching, dissolve concrete dust on unprepared concrete Surface abrasion, where it is difficult to contain water used in acid-etching The first and arguably most important step in any floor coating job is surface preparation. After all, even the very best coating system is only as good as the surface it is adhered to. With that in mind, the first step is cleaning. All dust and dirt must be removed from the surface. Any loose chips of a previous coating must be removed. Any oil must be carefully removed with soap and hot water or else the coating will surely peel in those areas. After cleaning, the grain of the concrete must be exposed to ensure maximum adhesion of the coating to the concrete. There are a primary types of surface preparation for a concrete floor: acid-etching and surface abrasion. Prepare the concrete surface with acid etching Acid-etching is the process of using an acid, usually muriatic acid, to dissolve the concrete dust that is always present on unprepared concrete. Since concrete dust is alkali, the acid does a good job of reacting to and dissolving the dust and then it can be removed with a simple wash-down. To accomplish acid-etching, simply take muriatic acid, available at any pool supply store, and dilute it with water at a ratio of 1 part acid to 3 parts water. This can be applied to the concrete using a watering can. When you can just start to see the grain of the concrete coming through, neutralize the acid solution with clear ammonia. The resulting solution is nonhazardous and can be washed down with water. There are multiple methods for surface abrasion including sandblasting, shotblasting, and grinding. Each of these methods provides a good solid grain in the concrete for the coating to adhere to. The primary disadvantage of surface abrasion vs acid-etching is the large amount of concrete dust that is generated. However, surface abrasion is ideal for situations where it would be difficult to contain the large amount of water used in acid-etching. All of these procedures may seem like a lot of extra work, but ultimately a good surface preparation will ensure that your floor coating will withstand the test of time. When it s time to recoat, a basic cleaning and a quick sanding with a sanding disk will be all that s required to prepare the epoxy surface for a new coating.
