4 History Drainage is an ancient method of water management. The first drainage works were implemented in ancient Greece, according to testimonies by Homer and Hesiod, specifically in the Kopais wetlands.

5 water drainage what exactly it is; Drainage is necessary for the quick disposal of water, the prevention of its accumulation in the subsoil and the protection of urban and agricultural areas from floods. Moisture, cracks and corrosion of underground parts of constructions, sinking of the road surface, overflow or salinization of the soil are some of the usual effects of mismanagement of underground waters or surface waters that filter through. The greatest problem faced by constructors and designers is the control and removal of excess water that might be generated by natural flow (rain or snow), variations in aquifer levels, the presence of adjacent potential natural collectors, etc. The penetration of water in the body of a structural element may cause chemical alterations which may lead to mechanical wear. Comparably, excess water in arable lands renders the plowing of the soil ineffective, while also accelerating the degradation of its structure, with adverse effects on plants (inadequate ventilation of their root system, reduced absorption of nutrients, lower degree of heat, etc.). In extreme cases this may lead to salinization of the soil, rendering it unsuitable for agricultural use. The aim of drainage is to keep moisture (water) away through the help of an appropriate network. Drainage involves the safe collection and removal of the water found in the ground, as well as any surface water that filters through. Put simply, it is a tunnel through which water can flow using gravity and get removed safely.

6 Plastic drainage pipes These are perforated with holes along their perimeter in order to collect and remove water safely. They are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). They are structured-wall, rigid or pliable, corrugated on the outside for easier installation following soil morphology, and smooth inside in order to facilitate the flow of water. Gravel Gravel is a form of filter, guiding water to the runoff points, i.e. the drainage pipes, while also preventing the fine grains of the earthy area from penetrating the filter. The material s grading and its permeability is project-specific. Geotextiles These are fabrics made of polypropylene or polyester, woven or not, which are placed either around the drainage pipe or between the layers of the trench, allowing water to flow freely into the pipe and preventing the penetration of soil media in its interior.

7 how it works Drainage is a protection system that complements sealing, preventing moisture from reaching a construction. On the contrary, sealing is essentially a barrier against moisture. A subsoil drainage system consists of a water diversion structure (usually a trench) and a water collection and removal network. The diversion is implemented by interrupting the soil's continuity and inserting a vertical or horizontal barrier containing inert materials that facilitate water runoff, as well as geotextiles which constitute additional filters separating the drainage layers from the surrounding soil media. Water collection and removal is implemented using plastic perforated structured-wall drainage pipes made of polyethylene, which collect and dispose of water either into natural collectors or into wastewater or rainwater sewerage networks. Alternatively it may be collected in a collection well and then pumped to appropriate locations. Plastic drainage pipes are laid on a layer of graded gravel within the trench, where a minimum inclination has been created in order to ensure that water will flow towards the desired point. Their diameter is usually greater than that specified by the estimated amount of water in the project (according to the specifications defined in the relevant design).

10 PERFORATION Perforation holes are essentially the water s points of entry into the drainage pipe. They are made symmetrically with special mechanical equipment along the whole length of the pipes. Their length and the distances between them are defined in such a way as to achieve the maximum water collection surface inside the pipes. 360 o 220 o TP Totally perforated pipes LP Locally perforated pipes GEODRAIΝ Pliable pipe Perforation degrees: 360 o Pipes perforated at let water flow in great distances and keep aquifer levels low. GEODRAIΝ Rigid pipe Perforation degrees: 220 o / 240 o Collection perforations along the pipe create a suitable runoff area in its bottom. In order to correctly install the pipe in the trench, ensure that the engraved (or printed) marking is on the upper side. MECHANICAL STRENGTHS GEODRAIN drainage pipes are produced from strong, resistant, high-density polyethylene (HDPE). They consist of two special geometry walls which are structured together in order to ensure high ring stiffness, up to SN8, structural integrity in potential deformation (ring flexibility) and easy water flow. The pipes rigidity is classified according to the European standard EN ISO 9969 (for details please refer to page 18)

17 Installation guide Installation of pipes in underground networks requires a series of works that need to be carried out as specified in the design so as to ensure the safety of the works and the installation itself. Basic information on trenches When digging a trench for conduit installation care must be taken in order to ensure a smooth, even underlying surface. It is best that trenching is performed as late as possible before the laying of the conduits and for backfilling to take place as soon as possible after their laying. Some basic accuracy checking criteria for the trench works are:» Slope and level of the bottom of the trench in accordance with the differences in height provided for.» Dimensions of the excavated sections.» Pipe diameters and mechanical strengths» Evenness of the trench surfaces, bottom and walls.» Removal of surface and ground water.» Selection, reuse and temporary storage of the excavated materials and removal of those which are unsuitable. Reception and transportation to the installation point The pipes and their fittings must be inspected upon delivery, to see that they bear the correct labels and markings and meet all the necessary specifications laid down in the design. Prior to installation they must be carefully checked for any signs of damage. Storage The conduits must be stored in such a way as to ensure that they remain incorruptible. They must not be placed next to open trenches and their storage area must be clean and free from any foreign bodies such as sharp stones that could cause damage. The use of specially customized forks or special polyester straps is indispensable. Laying Place the pipes in such way ensuring that their surface, alongside their length, lies completely on the bottom of the trench. In the case of interruption of the installation process, or due to a temporary break in the works, or in view of connection at a later date, the ends of the pipes must be sealed with protective caps. The caps must not be removed before the connection process. The area of the pipe that will come into contact with the connection fitting (coupler) must be clean and show no signs of damage. Connection During the connection process (coupler, well, etc.) it must be ensured that no foreign bodies can get inside the pipes. In order to achieve this, particular care must be taken when cutting and assembling the conduit. Guidelines for the correct use of KOUVIDIS Sealant and KOUVIDIS Lubricant, during the assembling of GEODRAIN pipes with the relevant coupler, can be found at Inspection During the installation, in addition to visual checks, the following checks must also be performed: checks for any deformation of the pipes, change in degree of compaction and the adequacy and effectiveness of the laying. The surface on which the conduits are laid must be thoroughly inspected and meet the requirements of the design regarding its degree of slope and evenness. ATTENTION: The above information comprises an informative guide for the safe digging of trenches and installation of pipes and in NO WAY should be confused with the specifications laid down in each individual design. For more information please consult the European standard ΕΝ 1610 (Construction and testing of drains and sewers).
