1 St Francis School District Code of Safe Practices POLICY: The Board of Education directs that all reasonable efforts be made to ensure a safe learning and working environment for the students and employees of this District. (Policy 8442) PROCEDURES: 1. Follow all established safety policies, procedures and roles of the SFSD. 2. Beware of the potential hazards involving various chemicals stored or used in the workplace. Know the location of your "MSDS" binder with information on chemicals used. 3. Employees shall report all unsafe conditions and equipment to their supervisor or the Business Manager. 4. Employees shall report all accidents, injuries, illnesses, and near misses to their supervisor of the Business Manager immediately, and no later than 24 hours after the event. Supervisors must report this immediately to the Business Manager. 5. Prohibited conduct under this policy includes, but is not limited to, the following: I. Reporting for work or working while under the influence of: (a) prescribed medications or over-the-counter medications which may lead to drowsiness or have other side effect which may pose a safety problem or tendency toward errors, unless prior approval has been obtained from the School District; (b) intoxicating beverages; or (c) controlled substances. 6. Horseplay and other acts which tend to have an adverse influence on safety or well being of the employees/students are prohibited. 7. Means of exit shall be kept unblocked and well lighted during building occupancy hours. 8. Crisis/emergencies: Refer to the SFSD Emergency Procedures Flipchart. 9. All employees are highly encouraged to wear slip resistant footwear. Slips and falls are a common injury. FIRE 1. In the event of fire, sound alarm and evacuate. 2. Upon hearing the fire alarm, stop work, grab your emergency folder, and proceed to the nearest clear exit. Assemble at the designated position outside. 3. Exit doors must comply with the fire safety regulations during building hours. 4. Stairways should be kept clear of items that can be tripped over and all areas under stairways that are egress control routes should not be used to store combustibles.

2 5. Aisles must be kept clear at all times. 6. Each classroom must have exit plans. 7. All fire extinguishers must be checked monthly and must inspected at least once annually. 8. Staff will take attendance of students, once exited the building, during fire drills/actual fire emergencies. STORAGE 1. Materials and equipment will not be stored against doors or exits, fire ladders or fire extinguisher stations. 2. Do not store compressed gas cylinders in areas, which are exposed to heat sources, electrical arcs or high temperature lines. 3. Cleaning solvents and flammable liquids must be stored in appropriate containers. 4. Always keep flammable or toxic chemicals in closed containers when not in use, and store materials in a special cabinet for "Flammables". 5. Do not stack material in an unstable manner; for example never stack material precariously on top of lockers, file cabinets, or other relatively high places. 6. Solutions that may be poisonous or not intended for consumption should be kept in well-labeled containers. 7. Cleaning supplies must be stored away from edible items on kitchen shelves. 8. All substances stored in secondary containers must be clearly labeled with the name of substance, date and hazards of substance indicated. 9. All staff shall have access to MSDS (Material Data Safety Sheets) on an immediate basis; the MSDS sheet details the hazards and precautions of the substance. Employees should read and understand the MSDS sheets for any substance they use. ELECTRICAL 1. Appliances, such as coffee pots and microwaves, must be kept in working order and inspected for signs of wear, heat, fraying of cords. 2. Fans used in works areas must be guarded. Guards must not allow fingers to be inserted through the mesh. New fans are equipped with proper guards. Older fans that do not meet code need to be disposed of. Contact the Business Manager for a replacement. 3. Report exposed wiring and cords that are frayed or have deteriorated insulation for proper repair. Taping frayed cords with electrical tape is not allowed. 4. Never use a metal ladder where it could come in contact with energized parts of equipment, fixtures or circuit conductors. 5. Maintain sufficient access and working space around all electrical equipment to permit ready and safe operations and maintenance. Maintain a three-foot clearance of space around all electrical panels. 6. Do not use any portable electrical tool and equipment that are not grounded or double insulated.

3 7. All electrical equipment should be plugged into appropriate wall receptacles or into an extension of only one cord of similar size and capacity. Use extension cords for temporary use only. Three pronged plugs should be used to ensure continuity of ground. Use only maintenance approved surge protector outlets with circuit breaker installed. 8. If equipment is to be worked on, the power must be shut off; using code required "lockout-tagout" kits and procedures. See Business Manager for details. 9. Do not overload the electrical circuits. The only item allowed for expanding the number of outlets should be a UL approved power strip. MECHANICAL 1. Inspect motorized vehicles and other mechanized equipment daily or before use. 2. Shut off engine, set brakes, and block wheels prior to loading and unloading vehicles. 3. Inspect pallets and their loads for integrity and stability before loading or moving. 4. Do not use compressed air for cleaning unless the pressure is less than 3 psi. 5. Identify the contents of pipelines prior to initiating any work that affects the integrity of the pipe. 6. Guard floor openings by a cover, guardrail or equivalent. 7. All equipment should have proper guards. Employees shall not removed guards. For details, see the Business Manager. GENERAL SAFETY 1. All spills shall be wiped up promptly. 2. Work areas should be maintained in a neat orderly manner. 3. Never leave lower desk or cabinet drawers open that present a tripped hazard. Use care when opening and closing drawers to avoid pinching fingers. 4. Do not open more than one upper drawer at a time, particularly the top two drawers on a file cabinet. 5. Always use proper lifting technique. Never attempt to lift or push an object which is too heavy. You must contact your supervisor when help is needed to move a heavy object. Use mechanical devices to lift heavy objects, or get help. 6. When carrying materials, caution should be exercised in watching for and avoiding obstructions, loose materials, etc. 7. Do not eat in areas where hazardous approved chemicals are present. 8. Goggles or face shields must be worn when grinding. 9. Do not use faulty or worn hand tools. 10. Wet floors/slippery surfaces: Employees will use "wet floor signs" when needed. Employees shall wear non-skid footwear where indicated by their job duties. 11. When working with a computer, have all pieces of furniture adjusted, positioned and arranged to minimize strain on all parts of the body. See the Business Manager for an assessment.

4 CONFINED SPACES 1. No district personnel are to enter any confined spaces (such as funnels or boilers). See the Business Manager for the definition of confined spaces. 2. In a confined space must be entered, contractors must follow proper OSHA safety regulations concerning Confined Spaces. ASBESTOS 1. Any removal of floor tile, insulation, ceiling tiles, floor adhesives, pipe lagging, etc. must be done with approval of the Business Manager following laws and codes for asbestos removal. 2. The district will have all asbestos surveyed every six months and the management plan updated. BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS 1. Employees cleaning up bodily fluid spills must use proper protection such as gloves. Call your building custodian to clean up spills. 2. Regulated waste items "soaked" with blood must be disposed of in "red" regulated waste containers. Call your building custodians with such items. 3. The district policy concerning "Bloodborne Pathogens" shall be followed including a designation of which staff position shall be offered the Hepatitis B Shot. 4. Only properly trained staff should handle Bloodborne Pathogens. All employees must take St. Francis School District's annual Bloodborne Pathogens training online. HEARING PROTECTION 1. Anyone exposed to an 85 decibel noise level or higher over a period of eight hours (or a weighted average of 85 decibel over 8 hours (i.e. a higher noise level for shorter period) shall wear appropriate hearing protection. Employees performing tasks using noise equipment, etc. should wear hearing protection. See the Business Manager for hearing protection. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) / Hazard Communication 1. Employees will use the PPE indicated on the product labels and MSDS sheets and indicated on the job safety analysis. The District will supply the proper PPE to employees. 2. Employees shall maintain, wear, and clean all PPE as required. 3. Schools shall maintain their MSDS (Materials Safety Data Sheets) in a prominent place in the school offices. Updates will be provided as required. FALL PROTECTION

5 1. No employee will work on a platform/roof area with a 4 foot unguarded drop without proper fall protection equipment. If no equipment is available, guardrails must be installed. This does not include ladders. 2. Employees must never stand on chairs, boxes or other objects. Instead use the direct provided stepladders. IAQ(Indoor Air Quality) / MOLD 1. Report any visible mold to the Business Manager. 2. Do not block any of the air vents in your room by placing anything over or on top of them including the window unit ventilators. Do not block vents either. Proper air circulation takes place by exhausting air through these vents. Fresh air comes in through the unit ventilators, or a central vent. 3. Use of chemicals and other substances will affect air quality. 4. Use personal care products such as perfumes can cause problems for others. Use sparingly. 5. Staff are required to follow all board approved policies regarding animals in the classrooms. 6. Report any unsanitary condition, mold, mildew, excess moisture or standing water immediately to lead building maintenance staff. 7. Do not keep open food stored in classroom. 8. Report any roof leaks immediately 9. Report any unexplained odors. 10. Use non-toxic supplies.
