PREFACE Waterproofing is reputed to be one of the most exacting crafts in construction. Unless executed perfectly, waterproofing can cause considerable damage to the building. Waterproofing buildings is therefore a challenge for all the parties involved in the engineering and construction process (e.g. architects, consulting engineers and building contractors). Experienced ZEMENTOL engineering staff draw up detailed CAD drawings and concrete mix designs for the integral waterproofing of each project. During the construction phase, ZEMENTOL engineers and technicians control, not just supervise, and document all relevant concrete castings for the implementation of the engineering drawings. Our services are performed exclusively by our own technicians and all relevant waterproofing materials are supplied by ZEMENTOL. As a result, the quality assurance and 10-year guarantee for the ZEMENTOL System include the entire waterproofing process from the first engineering steps to the finalisation of the on-site work. ZEMENTOL... ZEMENTOL is specialised in sealing buildings with waterproof concrete ( integral waterproofing ) against infiltrating or leaking water and other substances (e.g. water polluting chemicals). 4

ENGINEERING WATERPROOF BUILDINGS Why is engineering know-how essential for the success of the waterproofing? A given building seal can only comply with the recognised rules of technology if it is engineered properly. This especially holds true for waterproof concrete structures, since there are no comprehensive guidelines or even standards for this building sealing method. The German DIN standard and Swiss SIA building regulations, for instance, merely stipulate that additional measures have to be taken. Because every building is subject to special hydrological, geological and constructive constraints, generalised guidelines or standards cannot be formulated for sealing buildings with waterproof concrete. The engineers involved in the planning process face considerable risks when designing the waterproofing solution. To transfer those risks ZEMENTOL will perform all the waterproofing engineering and thus assume the associated engineering risk. Individual consideration of each building ZEMENTOL engineers check every building for its special characteristics: all constraints such as type of soil, water chemistry, type of structure, phasing during the construction process, dimension and use of the structure, as well as special requirements will be examined and taken into account for the engineering. By liaising with all the other relevant engineers involved, the waterproofing solution will be co-ordinated. The safe and economic solution will be based on the ZEMENTOL System. Engineering building by building ZEMENTOL will draw up comprehensive drawings of the waterproofing solution showing all relevant details, such as the positioning of the waterstops, size and shape of the concrete sections, position and type of passages, special solutions and all data relevant for the concrete mix design. After the concrete batch plant has been designated, the concrete mix designs will be calculated and set by ZEMENTOL. Furthermore, the necessary steel reinforcements for the limitation of cracks and the waterproofing in general will be notified to the structural engineer. Make savings on steel reinforcement ZEMENTOL engineers take appropriate measures concerning the construction design and the concrete technology in order to reduce the stress forces in the building. Therefore, the steel reinforcements can be reduced to a very economical level. Quality in engineering and execution The ZEMENTOL engineering drawings are the basis for high quality execution and optimal work preparation for the building contractor. After finalising the building design, the drawing includes all the details of the chosen waterproofing solution. This is most helpful if the building is being extended or renovated. Precision engineering assists the work of the architects and the structural engineer and gives all relevant information for implementation. ZEMENTOL turnkey service ZEMENTOL ensures the best waterproofing solution in order to meet both high quality standards and economic requirements on the basis of more than 55 years of experience. ZEMENTOL customers are always entitled to the best service, from engineering through to on-site construction. 6

Every company... can only be as efficient as its employees. Therefore ZEMENTOL employees are trained regularly, participate in special concrete seminars and hold special qualifications (e.g. for concrete mix design). Comments on waterproofing Engineering is a basic requirement for The effectiveness and endurance of waterproofing solutions do not exclusively rely integral waterproofing Engineering the waterproofing solution means taking on the engineering and execution, but responsibility for its results. This requires on the most appropriate engineering for knowledge of the structural requirements waterproofing, the dimensions and execution and the quality needs of the owner of the of the structure and its substructures, building. Therefore, the decision about the DIN Abs. 4 waterproofing solution to be employed cannot be left to the contractor. Waterproof Buildings, Prof. Dr. Ing. H. Sipple, public court expert on concrete technology, building damage and concrete buildings The definition of a construction demands in-depth engineering know-how The feasibility of the construction itself and the waterproofing of the building are important issues... For integral waterproofing, all constraints have to be considered The engineering of the integral waterproofing is part of the structural planning and cannot be left to chance or improvisation on the building site. Besides professional engineering (details!), professional concrete pouring and compaction, the effective curing and the supervision of the building site are most important. Duties and risks for architects designing flawless buildings - Waterproofing as a special problem, Prof. Dr. Motzke, presiding judge at the Munich Supreme Court integral waterproofing, G. Lohmeyer When the structure has to be waterproofed itself, for example concrete containers or integral waterproofing, additional measures have to be taken. DIN , Para (4) 7

ZEMENTOL SYSTEM The solution for sealing buildings with waterproof concrete Definition of the ZEMENTOL System Advantages Concrete Technology Permanent waterproofing of the concrete profile with waterproof concrete and engineering of the structure to be waterproofed in compliance with: l specific requirements and constraints (e.g. shrinkage, creeping, absolute temperature and temperature differences, phasing of the construction process, etc.) l geologic and hydrologic situation: soil, water condition (e.g. concerning chemical orrosives), loads caused by changing water levels, maximum water level, etc. l concrete technology in relation to required quality characteristics and properties. The ZEMENTOL System meets all the requirements of the ÖNORM, DIN and SIA standards that require additional measures to be taken. Compared to traditional surface sealing methods (PVC membranes, crystallisation, bentonite, bitumen, etc.) ZEMENTOL offers the following advantages l significant cost advantage and reduction of construction time by eliminating the surface sealing, including all protective coatings. by eliminating all work related to the installation of surface sealing l the ZEMENTOL System guarantees a continuous and uninterrupted on-site work process, since the construction work can continue even under very unfavourable weather conditions. l Any infiltration can be localised easily and can be renovated quickly with a simple resin injection, even when water under pressure is infiltrating. The concrete technology is most important, together with construction measures, for achieving a waterproof structure. Waterproof concrete fulfils several tasks simultaneously: l structure solidity l permanent waterproofing l resistance against corrosive substances that attack concrete and steel reinforcements The quality characteristics required are defined by ZEMENTOL concrete engineers and be notified to the batch plant and building contractors in charge. The batch plant must comply with those requirements. Special construction materials For waterproofing all joints and passages the ZEMENTOL product range is at your disposal. 8

10-YEAR GUARANTEE Insurance Cover in the European Union with worldwide extension ZEMENTOL provides a 10-year guarantee for l the waterproofing of concrete as a building material. l the permanent waterproofing of the building, including all joints and passages as defined in the ZEMENTOL guarantee document. Furthermore, ZEMENTOL offers comprehensive European insurance cover with worldwide extensions. This cover is specific to each individual project. Please ask for further details. The insurance cover runs for 10 years starting with the completion of the waterproof concrete work, as defined in the ZEMENTOL guarantee document. All damage and consequential loss are insured. Quotation all in all: a delicate detail will be resolved in a way that is technically perfect, economically reasonable and covered by law and insurance. Prof. Dr. Motzke, presiding judge at the Munich Supreme Court Responsibility is our everyday business. 9
