YOUTUBE BEACH PROJECT CANNES LIONS 2017 An extensive build This year, the YouTube event at the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity provided over a dozen different zones, accommodating up to 900 delegates at any one time. Working for SETLive, we manufactured and installed the entire Beach Party which included the sub-floor, decking and over a dozen individual structures. This year s build was the most extensive our crew have undertaken in Cannes and the heat was at its most intense yet; challenging conditions that our experienced team took in their stride. Experiential Expertise: our crew installed the entire build including a dozen different structures in just seven days

Sand, steel & an innovative solution The YouTube Beach Party site covered an area of 52 metres by 20 metres. Our crew of thirty had just seven days for the entire build, working on the soft sand and exposed location of the beach. A simple yet innovative solution of a steel tenon and mortise style substructure addressed many of the problems inherent with this environment, the robust grid enabling us to precisely locate and secure the large Douglas Fir uprights that featured throughout the set, whilst also alleviating the problem of uplift. Build overview The chunky Douglas fir beams were used to create the main structural features including the distinctive 3m by 4.5m entrance arches. Steel skeletons were used to support the larger structures of the Main Stage and the Slide, while timber panelled walls divided the space throughout, creating different zones with stencilled graphics in the YouTube colours. Geometric shapes featured structurally and graphically, with hexagonal voids in the decking forming planters for palm trees and netted chill-out seating. Large sections of the redwood decking floor were laid in opposing directions, further highlighting the different zones. All services were concealed in the void between the subfloor and decking, supplying power for the different areas with their many LED screens, lighting features and different activities.

Visitors entered through the Douglas fir arches and down existing stairs to a Reception Area featuring a wall with largeformat stencilled graphics, before moving through to the Registration Area where we built a large desk, storage plinths and a rear wall with recessed LED screen. From here, visitors could access the many other zones that included T-shirt Making, a 6 Second Tunnel, Slide, Hang-out, Beach Volleyball area, Bars, Ice Cream Counter, Main Stage, The Nest and Out of Office work area. The Slide Standing 5.5m high, this was the largest structure at the YouTube Beach Party. It consisted of a cylindrical steel skeleton, 6m in diameter, clad with timber panels. An entrance staircase coiled half way around the drum-like exterior, leading to a viewing platform with hand rail and access to a bright red painted slide curving down around the other side. Visitors who took the slide, landed in a ball pit area fitted with safety netting. Inside the slide drum, different effects were created by a manually rotated periaktos graphic wall that lined the interior. This comprised forty-two 3m high vertical periaktoi, each with three 300mm wide facets: one mirrored, one with UV painted words and images and the third facet depicting graphics from the band Gorillaz. We also manufactured a round table and a series of stools for inside, provided an exit baffle and PVC curtains for the entrance and exit.

Tree Shirts & the 6 Second Tunnel For this custom T-shirt printing area we created two 5m long counters, side walls, a rear wall with painted palm tree motif and various graphics. We made mounting for touch-screen devices and shaped a T-shirt outline in the wall for recessed neon lighting. A rope wall divided the two areas. This was created by replacing the core of the rope twist with lengths of slender steel tube to provide rigidity. The ropes were then fixed to the floor and a Douglas fir timber cross beam above. The other side of the tunnel comprised a wall with six recesses for LED screens. Hang-out, Beach Volleyball, Bars & Ice Cream Counter The hang-out was located in a sunken area, a 150mm step leading down to an array of bean bags and cushions where delegates gathered to listen to talks and presentations. The 7m long stencilled rear wall was constructed with three rows of bleachers and overlooked a full wall LED screen, alongside a further rope wall. Shade was provided by awnings fastened to cross beams. In the Bar, we built a large three-sided serving area including the main 5m long counter, with LED screen wall to the rear. The multi levelled counter was used for cocktail making and as this area played host to the band Duke, music-themed graphics were added to the geometric theming of the walls. A popular feature of the bar area was the 4.5m long swing wall, comprising six red-roped swings, the wooden seats lining-up precisely 600mm from the decking floor. The Beach Volleyball area included a viewing platform of three irregular bleachers with stencilling to the rear wall, graphics and housing for the electronic scoreboard.

This area backed on to a second cocktail bar including an LED rope outline of a martini glass, scribed into the wall. We also created a 5m hexagonal ice cream counter which included an LED rope graphic, stencilling and painted graphics to the rear and a Welcome to the Beach sign for the end of the pier. This was CNC cut, painted and mounted on a steel wire mesh. Your hard work, incredible engineering and tireless craftsmanship showed through in every detail. A great crew too, who couldn t have been nicer to work with despite everything they were up against. By far and away the best project I ve ever worked on. Harry Osbourne, Creative Director SETLive Main Stage One of the largest structures on the beach, the main stage comprised a steel frame, clad with timber panels on site. Large, chunky 300mm by 300mm Douglas fir beams were craned onto the beach to create the stage canopy, the longest of which reached 11m and weighed close to a tonne. A system of yacht-like sails provided the canopy and some welcome shade for the delegates. The stage itself was on three levels: an 8m central section plus two 5m side sections. Stage wings were created either side from 3m high printed flats. Our crew also created a removable DJ booth and lectern.

The Nest & Out of Office Area Another chill-out area, The Nest included an LED screen to the rear wall and large hexagonal decking voids strung with cargo netting strewn with bean bags and cushions. The larger 16m by 7m Out of Office area was created on and around an existing floor and low wall. Our crew created an additional large rear wall and side walls with graphics, providing a place for informal meetings, catching up on work and charging devices. A large 8m by 2m desk was created from glulam beams and decking, while a long central beam with uprights was used to suspend stylish task lighting over the desk. Cladding was added to the existing stairs, providing theming through the exit from the beach and out onto the promenade. It was the hottest we ve had and the scope of the build was far bigger than anything we ve done before. But it looked stunning. I can t tell you how much incredible feedback we ve had from clients and guests. Harry Osbourne, Creative Director SETLive
