5 Title 24 Cool Roof As of July 1, 2014 the Title 24 Cool Roof standards have taken effect. Here is an explanation of what Title 24 is, what it means to your roo ng project and what your options are. RESIDENTIAL REROOF PROCEDURES FOR COOL ROOF PRODUCTS 2013 CALIFORNIA ENERGY CODE SECTION 150.2(B) H Beginning July 1, 2014 the 2013 California Energy Efficiency Standards will go into effect and require all re-roofing to meet the Cool Roof requirements to the updated Title 24 Energy Standards. Before this date roofing contractors could bypass Title 24 standard with increased attic ventilation. This new code eliminates that option for contractors and homeowners. The basic way to comply with the new standards are to install shingles that have been approved by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CCRC). While these shingle comply with the new code, they increase the material cost anywhere from 50 to 70 percent, potentially adding $2000 and over to job cost. These products also come with a limited color pallette. Fortunately, there are compliance exceptions for homeowners to choose from Cool Roof Exceptions a. Air space of 1.0 inch airspace is provided between the top of the roof deck and the bottom of the roofing product. This applies mainly to tile products as composition shingles require a solid decking to nail to. b. The installed roofing product has a profile ratio of rise to width of 1 to 5 for 50% or greater of the width of the roofing product. c. Existing ducts in the attic are insulated and sealed according to Section 151.1(c)9 HERS rating. Form CF-3R is required, provided by a licensed contractor. d. R-38 attic insulation. An insulation certificate is required. e. Building has a radiant barrier in the attic meeting the requirements of Section 151.1(c)2. f. Building has no ducts in the attic. g. R-4 insulation installed on the deck above the vented attic. Each one of these compliant options has their advantages and disadvantages based on your current insulation factors of your home or business. Talk to your DSR rep to determine which option may be best for you.
