1 THOROSEAL CPB 1 Capillary/Crystallising waterproofing, surface applied slurry for use on concrete and mortar Description of product THOROSEAL CPB 1 is a waterproofing system for waterproofing concrete and cementitious substrates. When applied to the surface of concrete or mortar, insoluble crystals are formed and developed in the water bearing capillaries, effectively blocking the passage of water and ensuring permanent water tightness throughout the life of the structure. THOROSEAL CPB 1 is a blend of selected cements, well-graded sands and moisture activated chemicals. THOROSEAL CPB 1, when mixed with water, forms a slurry which is applied directly to concrete, blockwork and cement renders to provide general waterproofing. The product can also be used as a dry shake on to horizontal construction joints to provide additional waterproofing. Uses The THOROSEAL CPB 1 system has a wide use in waterproofing: Water retaining structures as water tanks and towers, reservoirs, swimming pools, dams, canals etc. Basements, tunnels, foundations, retaining walls, construction joints, lift pits etc. Benefits - Provides excellent waterproofing properties by becoming an integral part of the structure. - Active ingredients penetrate the pores of the substrate and therefore will not delaminate, peel off or wear away. - Protects concrete and reinforcement against corrosive water borne substances. - Crystalline action reactivated by contact with water, providing long-term additional protection. - Effective against positive and negative water pressure. - Water vapour permeable. - Non-toxic or tainting. - Proven world-wide track record. Physical properties Adhesion new to old concrete (NF P ) - CPB 1 as slurry: 2,1 N/mm². - CPB 1 as dry shake: 1,9 N/mm². WRAS Potable water approval, based on BS6920: part 1 : tested and approved for use up to 40 C. Waterproofing positive water pressure (UNE /90) at 7 bar: Penetration depth of water reduced with > 70% versus untreated. PE_THOROSEAL CPB 1.doc 09/01/14 1/5

2 Colours Grey. Coverage THOROSEAL CPB 1 as slurry coat: approximately 1 kg/m² per coat. THOROSEAL CPB 1 as dry shake: unmixed material approximately 1 kg/m². Packaging THOROSEAL CPB 1 is supplied in bags of 25 kg. Storage THOROSEAL CPB 1 should be stored under cover and clear of the ground. Protect the materials from all sources of moisture and frost. Rotate the stock in order not to exceed the maximum shelf life of 12 months. Field of application How do these materials work Moisture and free lime present in the substrate react with the active chemicals in the THOROSEAL CPB 1 waterproofing system, to create a continuous barrier of insoluble crystals, which penetrate deep into the capillary structure of the concrete. These capillaries and interstices are blocked to the passage of water, whilst permitting the transmission of air and water vapour, enabling the structure to breathe. The rate and penetration of crystalline development varies with the density and surface absorption of the concrete. Surface penetration sufficient to provide full waterproofing properties is normally achieved after 5 7 days. Therefore, initial observations may suggest the application of THOROSEAL CPB 1 product has not worked. This is not so give it time! The THOROSEAL CPB 1 waterproofing system is equally effective against both negative and positive water or osmotic pressure, and can be applied to the internal or external surface. Wherever possible however, THOROSEAL CPB 1 waterproofing system should be applied to the surface with which the water is in direct contact. This will result in an accelerated rate of penetration and crystallisation into the concrete structure. After the crystallisation process has successfully waterproofed the structure, the active chemicals in THOROSEAL CPB 1 remain dormant in the concrete to offer long-term protection. Any later contact with water will reactivate the sealing process. New static construction joints The vast majority of leaking water retaining (or waterproofing) structures constructed of sound dense concrete, leak only at construction or day joints. Costly remedial work can be avoided by the use of THOROSEAL CPB 1 as a dry shake onto the horizontal surfaces of joints or as a slurry application on vertical surfaces. (see figures 1 and 2). Waterproofing of concrete base slabs In conditions of high water table THOROSEAL CPB 1 may be applied as a slurry or dry shake over blinding concrete immediately prior to casting the slab. This sandwich system will prevent ingress of ground water preventing deterioration and dampness. Foundations should be treated on the external face wherever possible, as should the face of construction joints. THOROSEAL CPB 1 waterproofing system can be applied immediately after the formwork has been removed, as the water curing process required for THOROSEAL CPB 1 will also ensure full hydration of the concrete. If the treatment is to be exposed and an aesthetically finish is required, the THOROSEAL CPB 1 waterproofing system after curing should receive a sand/cement render on which to apply the desired finish. Existing structures Structures subject to water leakage or ingress, must be carefully inspected to determine the cause. Any water present should be cleared away so that a thorough survey can be conducted. WATERPLUG should be used to fill cracks, prior to the application of THOROSEAL CPB 1 over the entire surface. Application Substrate preparation In common with all surface treatments to concrete, the quality of substrate preparation directly effects the performance of the system. Surfaces to be treated must be free from dust, oil, grease, paint, residual curing compound, mould oil or any previous surface treatment that will impair adhesion of the THOROSEAL CPB 1 system, or inhibit penetration of the active chemicals or water into the surface. These include polymer modified renders and those substrates treated with silicon or silane water repellents. Remove any laitance and provide an open pored, slightly rough surface sufficient to act as a mechanical key, essential for adequate adhesion of the THOROSEAL CPB 1 waterproofing system treatment. Areas of weak or honeycombed concrete must be repaired. Hollow debonded renders must be removed and made good. Surfaces to be treated that are not damp, must be prewetted and still damp at the time of application. THOROSEAL CPB 1 can replace PVC waterstop in static construction joints. 3 Mixing Always add water to THOROSEAL CPB 1 waterproofing system not in reverse order. THOROSEAL CPB 1: Pot life Mixing liquid minutes clean potable water Blend app. 7,0 litre (6,5 7,5 litre) water into 25 kg powder. Mix until a smooth consistency is obtained. The water quantities for mixing may vary slightly depending upon ambient conditions. In all instances, it is important to mix the material to the correct consistency. Do not exceed the maximum water demand. Mixing is preferably done using a slow-speed mortar mixer ( rpm). Mix only sufficient THOROSEAL CPB 1 waterproofing system, as can be used in 20 minutes. Do not add additional water after initial mixing. Application Do not apply THOROSEAL CPB 1 to frozen substrates or if the ambient temperature is below 5 C, or expected to fall below 5 C within 24 hours. Avoid application in direct sunlight. Always apply the THOROSEAL CPB 1 waterproofing system to a pre-dampened surface. THOROSEAL CPB 1 mixes are applied by brush or spray. Apply the material in 2 coats at right angles, the second coat whilst the first is firm, but green - usually 3 to 4 hours after the first coat (dependent on temperature etc.) THOROSEAL CPB 1 dry shakes are spread over the prepared and dampened concrete base, immediately prior to casting the new concrete. Plugging leaks Leaks and holes drilled to relieve water pressure are sealed permanently using a plugging compound of WATERPLUG (for further information see WATERPLUG technical data sheet). To plug leaks under pressure, chase out the area of the leak until water flow is free, and seal with plugging compound as above. When the mortar has set and initially cured (approximately 20 minutes), complete the waterproofing, lapping THOROSEAL CPB 1 slurry coats onto the WATERPLUG and surrounding concrete. Holes and leaks under high pressure can be similarly sealed, using a plastic hose to release the pressure while applying the WATERPLUG compound. Curing / After treatment The THOROSEAL CPB 1 waterproofing system must be prevented from drying out too fast and should be kept damp for 5 to 7 days. Mist spraying with water, covering with damp hessian or polythene is effective when drying out would otherwise take place. Curing compounds are unsuitable for use with THOROSEAL CPB 1. Protect from weathering, sun, frost and wind for a similar period. Tanks and other water retaining structures may be filled 24 hours after final THOROSEAL CPB 1 waterproofing system application, as crystal growth is accelerated by water pressure. Clean up and spillages Non hardened material may simply be removed with water. Use of plastic or rubber containers is recommended. Additional information THOROSEAL CPB 1 waterproofing system is not suitable for subsequent decoration, unless first protected with a sand/cement render. THOROSEAL CPB 1 waterproofing system acts via a crystal growth mechanism. Therefore, it may take up to 3 weeks from application for complete waterproofing properties to be achieved. Health and safety THOROSEAL CPB 1 is based on cement and can be irritating to the skin and eyes. Gloves and eye protection should be worn. The use of dust masks is recommended. Accidental splashes of the material to the skin or eyes should immediately be washed off with clean water. In the event of prolonged irritation seek medical advice. In the case of ingestion give water or milk to drink and treat symptomatically. Medical advice should be sought. A Material Safety Data Sheet is available on request.
