7 ANATOMY OF A COMMERCIAL ROOF Most commercial roofing systems installed in North America today are single-ply systems that are mechanically attached. Which means they are fastened to the substrate usually a corrugated steel deck using screws and plates or oversize washers. The insulation and cover board (if used) is first fastened in place, and then the membrane or roof cover is installed over the top using a different set of screws and plates located along the edge or seam. The seams of the thermoplastic roof cover (i.e. PVC or TPO membrane) are then fused together using hot-air to create a seam that can be made as strong as the membrane itself. WHY THIS MATTERS It s important to understand the anatomy of a commercial roof because OMG PowerGrip products are designed specifically for use on commercial roofs. In fact, the original PowerGrip and PowerGrip Plus products are made using the same brand and type of thermoplastic material that s installed on the roof, and bonded to the roof cover using the same hot-air welding technique that was used to create the watertight seams on the roof. All PowerGrip products, including PowerGrip Universal, are secured directly to the structural roof deck using the same or similar fasteners that hold the roofing system in place.
