1 02800 SHADE STRUCTURES for PLAY AREAS ****************************************** SPECIFIER: The shade structure shall utilize a four point hypar system with four columns located a minimum of 10 feet from any part of the playground structure/components. A system utilizing more than four columns requires M-DCPS approval on a per project basis. The Drawings shall show the location of the playground equipment, fabric structure columns, fencing, and the extent of fabric along with their dimensional relationship to each other. The shade fabric portion of the system shall be minimized and need only cover the playground equipment. ****************************************** PART 1 GENERAL 1.1 RELATED REQUIREMENTS A. Coordinate Shade structure with work before and after, especially: 1. Play surface. 2. Playground fence/gates. 3. Walkways 4. Playground equipment 1.2 MANUFACTURER S SYSTEM ENGINEERING DESCRIPTION A. Engineer, fabricate and install shade structure system to the structural loads without exceeding allowable design working stresses of materials involved including anchors, fasteners, and connections. B. Manufacturer System Design Criteria: 1.) Structural heights must meet all clearance guidelines and regulation requirements. 2.) All structures must be engineered to meet the requirements of the Florida Building Code, Chapter 3105, latest edition, SREF, and all other applicable codes. 3.) All calculations must be done in compliance with Chapter 16 of the Florida Building Code, latest edition. 4.) Engineered drawings must be provided by Contractor and must be signed and sealed by a State of Florida Registered Engineer with experience in designing fabric structures. 5.)Fabric shall be designed to allow for quick removal and reattachment without causing damage to the fabric and/or fabric components. 6.) All concrete footings shall be designed in accordance with above stated requirements. 7.) All Steel components to be factory welded by certified welders to American Welding Society Standards. 8.) All welded areas must be "prepped and shop coated" with a cold galvanized treatment. 9.) All steel components shall be hot dipped galvanized per ASTM A-1 23 and powdercoated with a minimum of 4 mils thickness. 10.) All steel columns and frame members shall be cold-formed steel ASTM-500 with a minimum yield of 40,000 PSI and minimum tensile strength of 45,000 PSI. 11.) All hardware shall be stainless steel with provisions to prevent galvanic reaction. 12.) Tensioning cables shall be a minimum 5/16 in. galvanized cable with a project number Shade Structures

2 minimum of two (2) galvanized cable clamps per connection. C. Coordination: 1. All elements of the playground shall be coordinated. 1.3 REFERENCES (Latest version of the following documents) 1. ASTM E-84 Class A Fire Rating 1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: A firm with a minimum of 5 years experience in installing shade structures that can supply a list of 10 completed projects. 1. The projects shall be similar in size, design and complexity to this project, and each listed project shall bear the client name, a person to contact, and phone number. 2. The installer shall supply a letter from the proposed shade structure producer certifying that the installer has a workforce trained in installing its product, that the installer s work is of good quality, and that installer is approved by the producer. B. Contractor s Design Submittal: The Contractor and his proposed installer shall make design submittals that select and coordinate products and means of execution for the shade structure assembly work. 1. The Contractor s design shall produce an assembly that performs as specified, and that follows the detailed specification of product properties and their installation. 2. The A/E and Board will review the Contractor s proposed design submittals for conformity to the specified descriptive and performance criteria until approval is given. 1.5 DESIGN SUBMITTALS A. Contractor s Design, following the specified overall performance requirements. Submit, the following for approval by A/E and Board before the record submittals: 1. Layout of play area illustrating playground equipment, fencing, gates, shade structure columns, extent of shade fabric, dimensions, etc. 2. Provide detailed fabrication and erection drawings showing all structural heights, vertical clearances, connections, fabric type and grade, slope of structure, dimensions, and gauge of structural steel. 3. Text of Special Warranties on letterheads of shade structure assembly installer and shade structure producer. 4. Quality Reports. Submit, for approval by A/E and Board before record submittals: project number Shade Structures

3 a. Qualifications of shade structure producer. b. Qualifications of shade structure assembly installer 1.6 RECORD SUBMITTALS A. When the shade structure assembly design submittals have been approved, submit: 1. Product Data: In addition to design submittal revisions required for approval: a. Submit documents attesting to, flammability and lead-free pigments. 2. Shop Drawings: Shop Drawings shall include the following: 3. Samples: a. Provide to owner available colors and two 12 in. x 12 in. piece of fabric in selected color. 4. Quality Reports: 1.7 SPECIAL WARRANTIES Follow A. Entire Shade structure Assembly (products and installation): 1. Scope of Special Warranty of Entire Assembly: Replace all components of Shade Structure that show defects. a. Defective fabric : As specified below in warranty of fabric. b. Defective steel structure/foundation : Defects such as excessive rusting of structure or other metal components. c. Name the installer of the entire assembly as the entity issuing the limited warranty to the benefit of the Board (Miami-Dade County Public Schools). d. In satisfying the warranty the installer of the assembly shall remove defective work and replace it, including products, labor, delivery and taxes. 2. Warranty period / duration: Steel Structure; From date of Substantial Completion of the Work until 20 years after that date. Fabric; From date of Substantial Completion of the Work until 10 years after that date. B. Fabric: 1. Scope of Special Warranty of Fabric: Replace fabric that shows defects. a. Defective : Fabric that shows such defects as embrittlement, rot, cracking, tearing, significant color change, and shrinkage. b. Name the synthetic grass producer as the entity issuing the limited warranty in the interest of the Board (Miami-Dade County Public Schools). c. In satisfying the warranty the producer shall provide products to replace defective components and affected other components, including delivery and taxes. 2. 4 PART 2 PRODUCTS Follow FABRIC A. Fabric 1. Fabric shall be SupaShade Plus Synthesis or M-DCPS approved equal. Approved equal must be manufactured from 100% monofilament. No tape is permitted. Fabric shall provide 95% UV protection/block, and shall meet NFPA Test Method 2 and ASTM E-84 Class A Fire Ratings. 2. All Fabric panel corners/attachment points shall be reinforced with a double layer of heavyduty 2 in. webbing. All cable exit points in fabric corners shall be reinforced with a double layer of same webbing. B. Product / Producer: 1. Shade Systems Inc. 2. USA Shade and Fabric Structures 3. Solar Shade USA, LLC PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 INSPECTION, SEQUENCING, AND PRELIMINARY WORK A. Inspect the location of this work to ensure the following: 1. That proper drainage of drainage course into surrounding soil or drains can occur. 2. That adjacent elements such as soil, grass, and walks are at proper elevations and suitable for installation of border, edging, and other protective surfacing components. B. Dig one or more holes, to bottom elevation of the drainage course depth, to inspect existing conditions. Using the permeability test specified at the end of this section, determine the permeability of existing condition. Report all unsatisfactory conditions and result of all permeability tests to the Contractor, A/E and the Board. C. Perform excavation to depth needed to install drainage course, and inspect horizontal and vertical surfaces in presence of Contractor and A/E to determine the soil conditions for lateral or vertical draining of drainage course. 1. Slope bottom of excavation at least 1% in the direction(s) of available drainage. 2. If sufficient draining into pervious soil can be attained by sloping the excavation to all or part of its perimeter, do so, at no increase in Contract Sum. 3. If an impervious layer, such as paving or limestone, underlies the protective surfacing area, drill sufficient holes to drain the area and fill drain holes with clean gravel, protected on top by 1/4 in galvanized steel mesh, at no increase in Contract Sum. 4. 5 5. Sub-grade shall be shaped to an appropriate profile and compacted to achieve a minimum 90% compaction in accordance with ASTM D698 Standard Proctor Method. D. Do not continue work after excavation until playground equipment has been installed. 3.2 INSTALLATION A. All components of the Synthetic Grass System shall be installed following the instructions of the producers of each component, except as more stringently specified herein. 3.3 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING 1. Deliver structural components to pre-designated location. 2. Deliver all fabric in protected and original packaging. 3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. 1. /// project number Shade Structures
