2 Instructor: Aaron Larson Unit Title: Towers Course: Engineering Lesson Number: 1 Grade Level: 8 Time Allotted: 50 minutes Objectives and/or Purpose: 1) Given a picture or definition, students will be able to identify and match the description of the different waves associated with earthquakes 2) Given a description, students will be able to identify passive and active engineering concepts 3) Given the term resonance, students will be able to define and describe its relation to earthquakes. 4) Given 5 pieces of balsa wood and construction materials, students will be able to construct a tower that will hold 4 stories (metal plates) and withstand an earthquake of at least 5.0 on the Richter scale. Materials: Earthquake simulator Resonance model Demonstration tower Set Induction/Introduction/Pre-assessment Have you ever seen footage of a tower shaking or collapsing during an earthquake? Overview Today we will start talking about your tower project. I m going to talk to you about a few things regarding structures and how they are affected by earthquakes. I will also demonstrate the earthquake tester that we will use to test your towers on. After that I will show you the materials you ll be using and give you some tips for constructing your tower. If there is time at the end of the period we will get into groups of five, otherwise we will do it before starting to work on Monday. We will be testing your towers next Thursday, February 15. Content Presentation Waves Transverse (torsion, shear) Longitudinal (compression) Earthquake waves (P)rimary- longitudinal (draw) o Push-pull force o 5 miles/sec (S)econdary- transverse (draw) o Snake like o 3 miles/sec o Causes major damage in quakes
3 Locating earthquakes o Find the difference in speeds between the two waves o Time between arrival of P and S waves o Plot readings from different locales Quake Engineering Buildings surviving a quake o Well designed o Solid ground Frequency of earthquakes o Frequency = cycles in a period of time o Hertz = 1 cycle per second o Period = time in seconds Natural Frequency o 10 story: freq = 1 hertz, period =1 second o 20 story : freq = hertz, period=.5 seconds o 5 story: freq =.5, period = 2 seconds o Most powerful quakes range from.5 to 5 Hz, therefore buildings 5-20 stories are most likely to suffer damage due to RESONANCE Review Repetition & Review Feedback Which waves cause the major damage in an earthquake? How are the waves and reading used to locate earthquakes? What are the best ways to make sure a building will survive a quake? Which size buildings are most vulnerable to a quake? Why? Demo: Resonance o Swing example o Show model on tester, explain resonance Application & Practice/Learning Activities: Students will build a tower from balsa wood that will be tested on the earthquake simulator. There will also be a worksheet to fill out before beginning the project. Closure/Summary Now you should have some understanding of how towers are engineered to resist earthquakes. Start thinking about how you will design your tower, tomorrow I ll demonstrate some construction techniques. Formative Assessment Structure/tower worksheet Summative Assessment: Students will test their tower on the earthquake tester to see how long it will survive as the amplitude of the quake increases.

6 Instructor: Aaron Larson Unit Title: Towers Course: Engineering Lesson Number: 2 Grade Level: 8 Time Allotted: 50 minutes Objectives and/or Purpose: 1) Given 5 pieces of balsa wood and construction materials, students will be able to construct a tower that will hold 4 stories (metal plates) and withstand an earthquake of at least 5.0 on the Richter scale. 2) Given pictures of joints, students will be able to identify the joint as correct or incorrect with a minimum of 80%. Materials: Demonstration tower Styrene Wax paper X-acto knife/razor Cutting board Balsa wood Glue Set Induction/Introduction/Pre-assessment What would happen if a beam if a weld or bolt in a skyscraper was broken? What if there was more than one? Overview Today we are going to talk about how to actually construct your towers. No matter how good an idea is, a poorly constructed tower will not hold up. We ll talk about making strong joints, and I ll demonstrate some construction techniques for your tower. Content Presentation Project o Show demo model o Show where to get tools and materials Building Tips o Cutting boards, gluing slabs, wax paper, pins o Angles o Joints and strength Review Draw examples on board, have students identify mistakes. Designate Groups Begin Work Finish worksheets if not completed Sketch must be approved before handing out materials

Remember you have to get you sketch approved before you get your materials and begin building. Content Presentation - Approve sketches as necessary - Distribute materials when sketches are approved - Spend time working with each group, checking on progress Repetition & Review Feedback - Help groups individually, ask review questions Application & Practice/Learning Activities: Students will build a tower from balsa wood that will be tested on the earthquake simulator Formative Assessment Checking with groups throughout the designing and building process Closure/Summary Give students enough time to clean up and put away all materials. Once all students are back in their seats, remind them: Remember you have days until we test your towers. Summative Assessment: Students will test their tower on the earthquake tester to see how long it will survive as the amplitude of the quake increases.

Materials: Earthquake simulator Prizes for winning teams Overview We ll be testing the towers today. When I call your group come up to the tester. One member of your group will have to explain your tower. After you place it on the tester I will begin the simulator and we ll see how long it lasts Content Presentation 1. Call group 2. Have presenter explain tower 3. Have group members place tower on simulator and metal floors into tower 4. Begin simulator, steadily increase intensity until tower fails. (first piece to break, note rating number) 5. Continue simulation until entire tower has collapsed. Repetition & Review Feedback - Where did this tower first fail? - Why did this happen? - What would have improved this tower? Application & Practice/Learning Activities: Students will build a tower from balsa wood that will be tested on the earthquake simulator Closure/Summary Make sure everything is cleaned up. Time left in the period will vary depending on how many groups/students and towers are in the class. This would be a good place for a review of the unit or intro to the next unit. Summative Assessment: Students will test their tower on the earthquake tester to see how long it will survive as the amplitude of the quake increases.
