Tapered cricket slope shall be twice the slope of the finished roof surface. 5. Tapered edge strip shall be 18" as manufactured from an authorized tapered systems fabricator. Cut tapered edge as required to match insulation and blocking thicknesses. C. Polyisocyanurate Insulation: Membrane manufacturers approved closed cell polyisocyanurate foam core insulation skinned on both sides with factory applied fiberglass facers suitable for ROOF INSULATION SECTION
3 installation with cold adhesive and mechanical attachment. 1. ASTM C , Type II, Class 1, Grade 3 (25 psi). 2. UL Classified and Factory Mutual Approved. 3. Minimum LTTR: 6.0 per inch thickness. D. Condition of Acceptability: By the Owner for the above subject to the following manufacturer's data: 1. Warpage potential. 2. Compatibility to proposed system, Fully Adhered Single Ply Roof System. 3. Fire rating of insulation in relation to substrate conditions. 4. Factory mutual approval 2.02 INSULATION SECUREMENT A. All insulation Securement shall provide a wind uplift rating which meets current code requirements. Provide perimeter and corner enhancements as recommended by the roof system manufacturer. B. Mechanical Fasteners: 2.03 METAL DECKING 1. Mechanical fasteners and plates as recommended and approved by the insulation and primary roofing materials manufacturer to meet the required pull strengths and wind loading. 2. Factory Mutual approved, hardened, self-tapping, Phillips pan head screws with 3 inch round, square or hexagonal steel stress plates. 3. Minimum penetration 3/4 inch, maximum penetration 1-1/2, minimum pull out resistance from deck 400 pounds unless specified otherwise by the membrane manufacturer. A. Galvanized corrugated steel deck, 22 gauge (minimum), of the same configuration and profile to match the existing. B. All new metal deck materials for replacement and overlay shall be compliant with FM Global requirements for the project and the tested FM assembly OTHER MATERIALS A. All other materials not specifically described but required for a complete and proper installation of the work of this Section, shall be as selected by the Contractor subject to the approval of the Owner's Representative. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 CONDITION OF DECK C. Prior to installing insulation on the deck areas, the existing deck must be inspected and all deficiencies corrected. D. The roofing contractor shall perform all other work of preparing the existing deck. When insulation is applied, the existing deck shall be dry and free of dew, frost, ice, and snow. E. The roofing contractor shall notify the Consultant of any unacceptable conditions or improper installations METAL DECK PREPARATION AND CORRECTION ROOF INSULATION SECTION
4 A. After removal of the existing wet or damaged roof system and equipment, examine the metal roof deck surface for condition and suitability to receive the new roof assembly. B. If the existing metal deck has been structurally impaired due to deterioration or is open due to the removal of obsolete equipment; the following steps shall be taken: 1. Examine the underside of the metal deck for any conduit located directly below the deck surface, anything suspended or fastened to the deck, etc. If necessary, detach all objects from the bottom side of the deck to be removed. 2. Remove the structurally impaired metal deck using a Sawzall to prevent sparks. Care must be taken to prevent metal deck sections from falling into the building. 3. Fasten new 22 gauge (minimum) galvanized corrugated metal deck of the same configuration and profile to the existing steel bar joists. New metal deck should span over a minimum of three steel bar joists (structural supports) and will lap over the outside supporting steel bar joists a minimum of 6". In the field and perimeter zones, fasten every deck flute at each steel bar joists using one (1) - TEK/ x 1 1/4" hex head washer screws. Fasten metal deck side laps with a minimum of four (4) - TEK/ x 3/4" hex head washer screws (maximum every 36" o.c.) between supporting bar joists. In the roof corners, fasten every deck flute at each steel bar joists using two (2) - TEK/ x 1 1/4" hex head washer screws. Perimeter is defined as a 10'-0" strip around the entire roof perimeter. Corners are defined as the common areas shared by two or more intersecting roof perimeter areas (10'-0" x 10'-0"). Welding of the replacement metal deck will not be allowed. E. Deck Cleaning and Painting: At areas of moderate corrosion development, the existing metal decking may require wire brushing, cleaning and painting. Wire brush, properly clean and paint areas of corroded roof decking with Sherwin Williams B66W1 DTM. F. Deck Overlay: At isolated areas, after proper cleaning and painting as described above, additional deck overlay may be required. At areas determined during the course of the project to need overlay deck installation, install minimum 20 gauge galvanized sheet metal mechanically fastened to the existing metal deck. Note: The Owner s on site representative and the contractor's on site project superintendent shall make the determination of areas of deck replacement, deck cleaning and painting and deck overlay installation. The Owner s on site representative shall keep a daily log and running total of the above items with daily signatures being obtained from the contractors on site project superintendent. G. Contractor shall document deck remediation both before and after corrections. Documentation of remediated areas shall be provided to the Owner prior to payment. The Contractor shall not be paid for deck remediation if proper documentation cannot be provided. H. Verify that the metal deck is now suitable to receive the specified roof insulation and membrane system INSTALLATION OF INSULATION: A. Installation of insulation over metal roof deck. 1. Mechanically attach all layers of new flat stock insulation and/or new tapered insulation into the existing deck. 2. Fastener frequency: One every two (2) square feet or in strict accordance with the selected manufacturer s requirements to provide a wind uplift rating which meets current code requirements. Provide perimeter and corner enhancements as recommended by the roof system manufacturer. ROOF INSULATION SECTION
5 3. Install additional fasteners as required to ensure insulation is firm under foot. 4. Drive mechanical fasteners flush to top surface. 5. Install tapered insulation around drains creating a 4'x4' drain sump. B. Other insulation installation requirements: 3.04 VERIFICATION 1. Stagger joints within layers at least 6 inches. 2. Install insulation boards in courses parallel to roof edges. 3. Firmly butt each insulation board to surrounding boards. Do not jam or deform boards. 4. Maximum insulation gap: 1/8 inch. Fill insulation board joint gaps larger than 1/4 inch with roof insulation. 5. Maximum elevation variation between boards at joints: 1/8 inch. 6. Cut and fit insulation boards where roof deck intersects vertical surfaces. Cut board 1/4 inch from vertical surface. 7. Filler size: 18 inches in length or width, minimum. All filler insulation shall be adhered in insulation adhesive. 8. Lay insulation in 48 inch wide courses. A. Upon completion of the installation in each area, visually inspect and verify that all insulation is complete and properly installed. END OF SECTION ROOF INSULATION SECTION
