1 SECTION PRE-ENGINEERED ALUMINUM CANOPY PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: 1. The extent of aluminum flat style walkway cover is shown on the drawings and as specified herein. 2. Definition: Pre-engineered aluminum canopy shall consist entirely of extruded aluminum structural sections and roll formed sheet panels. System shall consist of heli-arc welded, one-piece rigid structural bents (columns and beam assemblies),roof decking, fascia, wall panels, soffit panels, gutters, clearstory acrylic glazing, accessory items, hardware and foundations to provide a complete engineered and constructed system. 3. Water shall drain from the roof decking into the continuous gutter into designated aluminum members and out at grade level of the columns through aluminum welded shelves of the base. 1.2 REFERENCES A. ASCE 7 - Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures. B. AAMA Publication Voluntary Performance Requirements and Test Procedures for Pigmented Organic Coatings on Extruded Aluminum. C. ASTM B Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus. D. ASTM B Standard Practice for Chromate Treatments on Aluminum. 1.3 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS A. Design Load: 30 pounds per sq. ft. (146.5 kg per sq. m). B. Design load may be live load. C. Design Wind Load (Velocity): 110 mph (177.0 km/hr) with a 1.15 Importance Factor. D. Minimum roof deck thickness : inch (0.86 mm), capable of sustaining a concentrated walk-on load. E. Engineering Data: Submit manufacturer's design charts that include design load capacities, design wind loads, roof slope, span limits, foundations reactions and dimensional information. The structural engineer preparing installation shop drawings and calculation shall account for additional load on the walkway system by mechanical system piping shown in the construction documents. F. Base design on standards and specifications of the Aluminum Association, Inc. One-third increases in allowable stress may be used for wind and roof live loads, deflections limited to 1/60 span, total. PRE-ENGINEERED ALUMINUM CANOPY
2 1. Conform to requirements of the 2007 Florida Building Code (FBC) with 2009 Supplements. 2. Verify to the manufacturer compliance with Local and State codes. 1.4 SUBMITTALS A. Submit under provisions of Section B. Product Data: Manufacturer's product data, detail sheets, signed and sealed engineered shop drawings, specifications, component performance data and installation instructions. C. Samples: Each item and connection required by these specifications. D. Shop Drawings: Prepared specifically for this project; show dimensions of protective covers and interface with other products. Submit detailed drawings, layout of walkway cover system, bent locations (identify drain columns and wet bents), all mechanical joint locations with complete details, connections, jointing and accessories. Include details of concrete footing and bent anchorage. Shop drawings to be signed and sealed by a Florida registered structural engineer. E. Installation Drawings and Calculations: Provided Signed and sealed structural calculations and signed, dated, and sealed drawings for proposed walkway cover and foundation by a professional engineer licensed and registered in the state of Florida, who professes his discipline to be structural engineering. Do not reproduce Architect s construction documents. F. Color of canopy system shall be manufacturer s standard pre-finished white. 1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Codes and Standards: Comply with provisions of the following except as otherwise indicated: Standard Building Code, latest addition with amendments, and Florida State Requirements for Educational Facilities. B. AWS (American Welding Society) standards for structural aluminum welding. C. Manufacturer: Obtain aluminum covered walkway system from only one (1) manufacturer, although several may be indicated as offering products complying with requirements. D. Installer Qualification: Firm with not less than three (3) years experience in installation of aluminum walkway covers of type, quantity and installation methods similar to work of this section. Use adequate numbers of skilled workmen thoroughly trained and experienced in the necessary crafts and completely familiar with the specified requirements and methods needed for proper performance of this work. E. Field Measurements: Take field measurements prior to preparation of shop drawings and fabrication where possible, to insure proper fitting of work. However, allow for adjustments within specified tolerations wherever taking of field measurements before fabrication might delay work. F. Shop Assembly: Preassemble units in shop to greatest extent possible and disassemble as necessary for shipping and handling limitations. Clearly mark units for reassembly and coordinated installation. PRE-ENGINEERED ALUMINUM CANOPY
3 G. Coordination: Coordinate work of this section with work of other sections which interface with covered walkway system (sidewalks, curbs, building fascias, mechanical piping etc.). Coordinate work of this section, thought the Architect, with the walkway attachment to new building under construction and existing building. The general contractor shall coordinate the interface, means, and methods of installation of mechanical piping with in the walkway system as shown on the contract documents. 1.6 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: A. System Performance: Provide aluminum covered walkway and foundation system that has been designed, produced, fabricated and installed to withstand normal temperature changes as well as live loading, dead loading and wind loading in compliance with the 2007 Florida Building Code (FBC) with 2009 Supplements for geographic area in which work is located and as follows: 1. Live Load: 30 p.s.f. Minimum 2. Structural design for wind forces: Comply with ANSI A Design Wind Velocity: 125 m.p.h. 4. Importance Factor: Stability Criteria: Standard Building Code, Section B. Sizes shown on drawings are to be considered minimum. C. Structure shall be capable of sustaining severe icing, hail, and hurricane force winds and supporting a concentrated load such as being walked upon. 1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Inspect the materials upon delivery to assure that specified products have been received. B. Properly store materials in designated areas before use. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Acceptable Manufacturers: Basis of Design: Drawings and specifications are based on products by: Royal Aluminum, Inc.(800) (Florida) or Tel: (800) (National); Perfection Architectural Systems, inc. (407) ; and Ditt-Deck Extruded Aluminum Walkway Cover System by Dittmer Architectural Aluminum (800) or (407) B. Provide all protective covers from a single manufacturer. C. Equivalent systems by other manufacturers will be approved by addendum provided the following are submitted ten (10) days prior to bid opening and are complete: 1. Submit evidence of having operated a successful business of manufacturing and installing complete extruded aluminum walkway cover systems. a. Business must have been in operation under submitted name and ownership for a minimum of ten (10) years. PRE-ENGINEERED ALUMINUM CANOPY
4 b. Submit a list of successfully completed projects of similar scope, size and complexity within the state of Florida. List shall include job name, date of completion, architect's firm name, address and phone number, and owner s name with representative and phone number. c. Submit complete shop drawings for above completed jobs. d. Submit complete details with structural properties (moment of inertia, section modules, modules of elasticity, etc.) for all proposed sections (beams, columns, decking and other structural members). e. Comply with the requirements pertaining to substitution as set forth in these documents. 2.2 MATERIALS A. Aluminum Extrusions: Alloy 6061-T6, 6063-T5, and 6063-T6 as called for by profile and design. Extrusions listed below are as minimum requirements to the walkway. Bidders shall meet or exceed these minimum requirements and provide engineering submittals with required data and calculations for design. 1. Columns 4 x 4 x.125 min. 2. Sidewall beams 4 x 4 x.125 min 3. Perimeter Beams 4 x 6 x.100 min B. Aluminum Sheeting: Alloy 3105-H28 or 3004-H34. Manufacturer s products listed below are for cross-section profile reference. Provide cross section profile for Architect s approval during submittal process based on those provided or equivalent. 1. Roll-Formed Roof Panels; provide cross section profile for Architect s Approval Drawing profile based on Royal s Superpan or equivalent. a. 12 inch by 2-1/2 inch (304.8 by 63.5 mm). b. Minimum Yield: 30 ksi (2,109 kg/sq. cm). c. Thickness: inch. C. Hardware and fasteners: Plated non-corrosive/non-magnetic Type 18-8 stainless steel, sealed with neoprene "O" rings beneath flat washers. D. Sealant, Brake Metal Flashing, profile closures, and other Nonstructural Items: As per manufacturer. Provide rubber profile closures to match profiles at all locations where vermin nesting is possible on exterior of structure, verify locations with Architect. E. Gutters; continuous F. Warranty: 1. Manufacturer shall warrant the entire system against defects in labor and Materials for a period of one (1) year commencing on the date of substantial completion as established in Division One of these specifications. Intention of this warranty is the manufacturer will come onto the jobsite and do all necessary to effect corrections of any deficiencies. Prima Facie Evidence of defects in labor and material may include but is not limited to, one or more of the following: a. Moisture leaks b. Metal failure including excessive deflection c. 5 2.3 FINISHES A. Aluminum Extrusions: Meeting Aluminum Association Specification AA-M-10C-22A-21. Visible components shall be finished/ color with a baked-on enamel per AAMA Standard finish for all non-visible components may be a satin anodize 204-R1 Publication 603.8, color selected from manufacturer's standards. as selected by the Architect. B. Aluminum Sheeting: Factory finished with chemical cleaning, conversion coating, and baked-on polyester coating; conforming to ASTM B 449 and ASTM B FABRICATION A. Conform to dimensions, elevations, and details contained in project drawings. Comply with structural requirements. B. Use sections true to details with clean, straight, sharply defined profiles and smooth surfaces of uniform color and texture, free from defects impairing strength and durability. C. Columns, Beams, and Fascias: Extruded aluminum sections of sizes and shapes indicated. 1. All welding to be done by heli-arc process. 2. Fabricate and shop heli-arc weld into one-piece rigid bents. When size of bents do not permit shipment as a welded unit, outline to architect in submittal locations where field welds or concealed mechanical joints are proposed to be used during submittal process for approval. a. Any Mechanical joints, as approved by the Architect, shall consist of stainless steel bolts with a minimum of two (2) bolts per fastening. Bolts and nuts shall be installed in a concealed manner utilizing 1/2" thick by 1 1/2" aluminum bolt bars welded to structural members. All such mechanical joints must be detailed on shop drawings showing all locations for approval by Architect. 3. Provide cutouts and internal deflectors in members as indicated to act as internal water drainage system. D. Apply a shop-applied dip-coat of clear acrylic enamel to each column end terminating in concrete and CMU base to insulate from electrolytic reaction. Column ends shall be pierced to "key" grout to bend for maximum uplift protection. E. Roll-Formed Roof Decking with Cap: Self-flash and interlock into a composite unit, spanning double bays where possible. Shop fabricate to lengths and panels widths required for field assembly. Depth of section to comply with structural requirements. F. Expansion joints, design structure for thermal expansion and contraction. Provide expansion joints as required. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Verify all dimensions existing and provided. B. Examine adjacent work for conditions that would prevent quality installation of system PRE-ENGINEERED ALUMINUM CANOPY
6 C. Do not proceed until defects are corrected. D. Make reasonable adjustments in fabrication and erection to provide an acceptable finished walkway cover. 3.2 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING: A. Deliver, store and handle covered walkway system components as recommended by manufacturer. Handle and store in a manner to avoid deforming members and to avoid excessive stresses. 3.3 FIELD DIMENSIONS A. General contractor shall field confirm bent locations, dimensions and elevations shown on shop drawings prior to fabrication. 3.4 INSTALLATION A. Footings: 1. Locate footings as shown on drawings. 2. Form footings and "block out" for column placement. 3. Earth forms are acceptable provided the top 8 inches (200 mm) of the footing is formed and provides a smooth, true surface for location of CMU base. 4. Place concrete and rod thoroughly; maintain form rigidity and shape during placement and rodding. 5. Remove deformed footings and replace with new. 6. Remove forms not sooner than three days after concrete placement. 7. Replace earth around footings; remove excess excavated material from the site. B. Columns: 1. Shop-apply dip-coat of clear acrylic enamel or elastomeric solution at each column end, minimum 18 inches (460 mm), terminating in concrete/ CMU base to insulate from electrolytic reaction. 2. Align columns using a transit to ensure true alignment. 3. Set columns plumb and true in both directions. 4. Punch bottom of columns with internal deflector for water outlet. 5. Remove tape above concrete before final inspection. C. Beams: 1. If mechanically fastened system, place beams in column notches and secure with proper number of fasteners as specified by size of beam and engineering. Ensure contact bearing in bottom of column notches; insert aluminum shim plates as necessary. 2. Level tops of beams to receive roof panels; roof panels shall drain rainwater into beams as indicated. 3. Minor connections and incidental details shall be as shown on the drawings. 4. Ensure that end caps are welded securely into place. D. Roof Panels: PRE-ENGINEERED ALUMINUM CANOPY
7 1. Fabricate roof panels to required lengths. 2. Install level and square to beams to avoid "out of square" conditions at beam-ends. 3. Secure each contact point with a minimum of three stainless steel fasteners with 3/4-inch (19 mm) flat neoprene washers. 4. Install roof deck sections, accessories and related flashing in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Provide roof slope for rain drainage without ponding water. Align and anchor roof deck units to structural support frames. 5. Caulk at walls where walkway cover units contact surface. 6. Fully caulk each roof panel sheet metal screw head. 7. Caulk fabrication joints and seams away from view. 8. Caulk and seal other points where water penetration might be expected. 3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Shoddy or unsightly work shall be the basis for rejection. Immediately remove rejected work and properly reinstall. The Architect is the judge of unacceptable work. 3.6 CLEANING AND PROTECTION: A. Damaged Units: Replace roof deck panels and other components of the work which have been damaged or have deteriorated beyond successful minor repair. B. Cleaning: Remove protective coverings at time in project construction sequence which will afford greatest protection of work. Clean finished surfaces as recommended by manufacturer. Maintain in a clean condition during construction. C. Protection: Advise Contractor of protection and surveillance procedures, as required ensuring that work of this section will be without damage or deterioration at time of substantial completion. D. After completion of work and before final inspection, remove forms and all unused material and equipment. E. Hand dress all earth area disturbed in the process of the work. F. Clean walkway cover system of dirt, grease, handprints, and other blemishes. G. Leave area in a neat, clean, and acceptable condition. END OF SECTION PRE-ENGINEERED ALUMINUM CANOPY
