PROPERTIES OF SRP COMPOSITES AND THEIR EFFECT ON DESIGN PROCEDURES Rafał Krzywoń PhD MsC Silesian University of Tehnology, Poland Summary Desribed in the paper omposites are based on ultra-high strength steel wires formed in ords and assembled into a fabri in a polymeri (SRG) or ementitious matrix (SRP). Their behaviour is similar to other high arbon old drawn steels (for example prestressing steel): there is no perfet plastiity at yield stress level and ideal elastiity to the moment of rupture, almost linear stressstrain relationship makes them omparable with Carbon FRP polymers. Also flexibility and weight ratio is similar to fiber omposites rather than steel. In view of those similarities SRP and SRG omposites usually are designed with use of well-known proedures developed for CFRPs, having roots in 2001 fib bulletin 14. Paper provides a disussion of the orretness of this statement and gives some reommendations for the design. Keywords: Steel Reinfored Polymers; Designing of Strutures, FRP Strengthening. 1. INTRODUCTION Composites reinfored with high strength fibers are inreasingly replaing strutural steel in onstrution. Nowadays market offers a hoie of different types of fibers with different mehanial harateristis and a wide prie range. It is not always neessary to use expensive arbon fiber, espeially when similar properties an offer also steel reinforement. Based on ultra-high tensile strength steel (UHTS) wires, SRP (Steel Reinfored Polymer) and SRG (Steel Reinfored Grout) tapes are representing a relatively new branh of omposite materials. Steel wires obtained as a reinforement are made of the same perlite steel as used for making the reinforement of automotive tires. As a onsequene of the drawing proess, a small diameter, smooth surfae do not allows for good bond properties, but similarly to prestressing tendons, twisting of wires into the strands reates mehanial interlok between onrete and steel and additionally integrates filaments. Of ourse it slightly deteriorating mehanial properties. Unidiretional tendons are joined by knit yarns forming a fabri, it lets to ontrol the density of the ords (number of ords per entimeter of width), the spaing of ords and produe the fabri with different apaities. Linked fabri an be also strethed or bent, without losing its integrity, whih is partiularly important during installation. Filaments in atually produed fabris are spaed up to 6mm in light, what allows the use of a wide range of matries with different visosity: from high visosity epoxy resins to the ementitious mixtures. Figure 1 shows the most popular ord type and tapes with various densities. 1

Figure 1. Produed UHST ords and tapes [2]. 2. PROPERTIES OF THE UHTS STEEL AND SRP/SRG TAPES Used as reinforement of SRP and SRG omposites UHTS steel is about 5 times stronger than normal one. So good mehanial properties are obtained by proper seletion of hemial omposition, heat and mehanial treatment allowing to build the rystal struture of pearliti steel. The arbon ontent of steels of this type is in the range %. Steel in the form of wire is treated by drawing to a diameter of mm. During this proess the grains or single rystals of pearliti steel in the struture are aligned in the diretion of drawing, along the wire. By ontrolling the distane of the plates of the perlite is possible to inrease the draw tension and onsequently a better arrangement of the plates. Thin plates of ementite in steel ensure its improved plasti deformability. The possibility of strain hardening eutetoid steel is greater than the low-arbon steel. Suh steels have both high strength and good dutility. 2.1 Mehanial properties As the most of FRP reinforing materials, also SRP/SRG omposites haraterize exellent tensile strength in the diretion of the filaments and negligible strength in the transverse diretion. Ideally, the iron rystals strength is estimated to be MPa. Nowadays drawing tehniques allow for the prodution of strutural steel pearliti of strengths to 6000MPa for wires with diameters of 40 mirons. It ahieves tensile strength over 3000MPa. Wires used in the prodution of SRP fabris have a diameter of 2mm and strength of up to 3500MPa. UHTS steel is also more dutile than other traditional organi omposites. Table 1. 3 Mehanial behaviour of UHTS steel and based on them SRP omposites is similar to other high arbon old drawn steels (for example prestressing steel), there is no perfet plastiity at yield stress level. Table 1 shows properties of SRP/SRG omposites in omparison with traditional steel and FRP omposites, Figure 2 stress-strain relationship. Figure 2 illustrates tensile test results of six SRP speimens made of fabris with two densities (12 and 20 ords/inh) based on the most popular 3X2 ord type. As an be seen properties are nearly linear in the range of 80% strength, there is no visible yield level and only a slight weakening just below the ultimate strength level appears. Figure 2. Proposed stress-strain relationship and the distribution of test results. Desribed non-ideally-elasti stress-strain relationship of SRP laminate may be desribed with use of paraboli funtion. where reeived in GPa , (1) Fintion (1) has been mathed by the minimalizing of standard deviation. Figure 3 shows also distribution diagram of the test results. Although dutility is not omparable with onventional steels, however, muh better than most of the omposites reinfored with high-strength organi fibers. In addition, used steel fibers are ontinuous, so that there are no speial requirements for quality of matrix, whose main role, apart from ensuring adherene to the reinfored element is to protet the fibers from external fators. The matrix does not need to transfer the shear fores between the fibers, so it is possible to use a relatively large spaing of strands. 3

2.2 Appliability UHTS steel fabris are ompatible with most of the organi (thermo set and thermoplastis) and inorgani matries, what allows the impregnation with ementitious paste, reduing material osts and enhaning the fire resistane. Another important aspet in terms of the ost and easiness of appliation, is the weight of the laminate. Composites based on steel wires are, in dependene of filaments density, up to five times lighter than steel. Similarly as in the ase of FRP omposites, the exeution of SRP usually requires former surfae preparation to assure a orret bond. In ase of appliation of a ementitious matrix, it may also play a role of regularizing mortar, so there is no neessity for use of additional levelling layer. 2.3 Cost The ost of applying SRP fabri is similar to the CFRP strips. They are already available in several European markets, for example in Italy and Greee. The produer ost of the tape type 3X2/20 30m wide is about 30 $/m, in terms of parameters orresponds to a highly modular tape CFRP 1.4/120mm, whih in Poland is valued at 150 PLN/m. Additionally, along with the popularization of it an be expeted that osts of SRP will fall. Adhesives used are the same, but its onsumption is about 50% higher for the omposite SRP due to the neessity of impregnation. Labour osts are similar. In the ase of more omplex shapes an be regarded as a disadvantage need to use speial benders, but strips of CFRP in general annot be bent, just prefabriated profiles an be used or muh weaker fabris. 3. EFFECTIVENESS OF SRP STRENGTHENING SYSTEMS During several years the presene of SRP materials on the market, in addition to produer researhes [2], some independent test of elements under bending are made aross the world [3-6], more reently also a omparative studies of CFRP strips [7,8]. Similar test are also urrently being onduted by the author of this paper. Effiieny of SRP strengthening in terms of apaity is signifiant. In the bending tests of Mitolidis et al. [3], flexural strengthening of R/C beams with SRP strips allowed to inrease the loading apaity by 90% for span speimens and about 80% for support speimens ompared to the unstrengthened speimens used as ontrol. Slightly smaller effet reahed Wobbe et al. [4] and Ceroni et al [5], where strengthening effiieny reahed the level of 70% and Huang et al. [6], who notied a strength inrease of about 30%. Comparison between beams with equivalent strengthening ratio done by Prota et al. [7] showed that SRP tapes provided ultimate apaity approximately 10% smaller than CFRP laminates, D Ambrisi and Foai [8] have noted the same order of arrying apaity for beams strengthened with SRP and EB-FRP. Tests of prestressed beams performed by Balsamo et al. [9] proved omparable effetiveness to CFRP strips. Observed failure load was 15-20% lower newerthless the 50% lowest area of UHTS reinforement. What also important, the SRP steel was exploited more than arbon laminate (maximum stress exeeded 50% of strength). Cited researhers muh less signifiant results ahieved in enhaning the defletion apaity. 4

Mitolidis et al. [3] notied just 17% redution of defletion, Ceroni et al. [5] didn t found any advantageous effet, defletions were similar to those reorded for the unstrengthened beams. Better results an be realized only by prestressing of SRP tapes. Balsamo et al. [9] ahieved more than 20% redution for the ultimate load, but the effet is muh spetaular for servie load levels, when defletion of unstrengthened and raked beam growths far more rapidly. 4. PROPOSAL OF DESIGN METHOD OF SRP STRENGTHENINGS Generally RC members strengthened with externally bonded FRP systems are designed with negleting the debonding phase, when mehanially anhored strip works as unbounded bar. Debonding, typially onsisting of the detahment of more or less large onrete thikness (depending on the thikness and amount of FRP reinforement) is treated as ultimate design state. It should be underlined, that debonding is the most ommon failure mode and an our in different loations along the FRP strip. However, two main models of destrution are possible, onrete rushing (when the ultimate onrete ompressive strain is reahed) or destrution of the FRP system (due to the rupture of the fibres in tension or to the debonding). On the basis of Euroode 2 [10], following assumptions should be taken in the analysis: the priniple of plane setion, strain ompatibility, negleting of tension in raked onrete, perfet bond between UHTS steel strands and epoxy matrix, parabola-retangle stress strain relationship for onrete, bilinear stress strain relationship for standard steel. Remains ontroversial relationship for SRP omposite. General priniples for the analysis of CFRP strengthenings are based on assumption of ideal elastiity. As figure 2 and formula [1] shows, stress strain relationship of SRP laminate may be desribed with use of paraboli funtion. Disussed nonlinearity means for the strutural material the degradation of modulus of elastiity. For ultimate strain around 2% seant modulus is about 19% lower than initial one - question is: how that hange of the elastiity may affet the results, is it worthy to apply into the analyses omplex, nonlinear model for the UHTS steel?. Calulations provided by the author of this paper, with use of presented below proedures, shown, that simplifiation of the paraboli equation by onstant modulus of elastiity, equal 200 GPa only slightly worsens the auray of the results. For low SRP reinforement ratio both flexural apaity and stiffness are almost equal, differene growths with reinforement ratio, but still do not exeed 3% in the analysis of bearing apaity and 2% in the analysis of flexural stiffness [11]. Figure 3. Proposed stress-strain relationship and the distribution of test results. 5

Distribution of fores and stresses in the ritial setion, whih are the basis of presented designed model, are shown on the Figure 3. Failure ould be expeted at the time of ahieving by one of the edge strains its ultimate value or u. Searhes of bearing apaity are arried out on the basis of the ross setional u equilibrium of internal fores: f bx A 1 A (2) d s s M A f ( d x) A ( h ) (3) s1 yd G Gx where: A s1, A - area of steel and SRP reinforement. Unknown strains may be found through the linear strain profile (Bernoulli): d x s ; x h x (4) x Conrete stress blok is desribed by shape ( ) and loation of resultant fore ( G ) oeffiient. They depend on the edge strain G G (3000 2) G (5a) (5b) (5) Allowable strain of SRP u should be limited due to debonding. Tests [13, 14] are showing, that the bond strength of SRP is about 25% lower than that of CFRPs, mainly in relation to differenes in elasti modules and thikness of the laminate. Value of debonding strain ould be expressed as: fkftm, d 0.7 (6) t E 6

Defletion of the raked beam is resultant of the rotations of fully raked and non-raked setion. Most aurately, a variable stiffness along the length of the element should be onsidered, or aording to [9] phenomena may be expressed by distribution oeffiient : f f II 1 f I (7) Atual investigations [5, 12] show, that raking resistane depends on the intensity of strengthening. Craking moment of SRP strengthened beam an even be doubled. In this ase it is important to take both standard and SRP reinforement into the analysis of bending fator W : M f W (8) r tm s s Figure 4. Comparison of theoretial (proposed model) and the test results [12]. 5. CONCLUSIONS Paper shows a new omposite material, based on UHTS steel, in flexural strengthening of retangular reinfored onrete beams. Mehanial properties of SRP are ompetitive to arbon fiber omposites. Due to the similarities it was possible adaptation of design proedures of beams strengthened with use of SRP tapes. Proposed formulations show good agreement with the results of ited laboratory tests, but the author of the paper is in the ourse of his own omparative researh of beams strengthened with SRP and CFRP omposites. Their results will be used to further improve the desribed method of alulation, and perhaps at least in part, will be presented during the onferene.
